MATCH REPORT BANBRIDGE HOCKEY CLUB MATCH DETAILS DATE 05/11/2016 RESULT A 2016/17 TIME 2 0 COMPETITION 14:00 PEMBROKE MATTHEW BELL (1), JOHNNY MCKEE (1) Bann travelled to Serpentine Avenue on Saturday last to play Pembroke Wanderers in the latest round of EYHL matches. On a bright cold day Bann settled into the match from the outset and gave Pembroke no opportunity to gain a foothold in the game. It was wave after wave of Bann attacks with the midfield of McCandless, Magee and Brown causing untold problems for the home defence. Time and again Bann created space but the lack of a final pass mean that they did not create any clear cut chances. Johnny McKee went closest to opening the scoring when he saw his reverse stick shot from mid circle flash over the crossbar and a short time later the home keeper saved well from another reverse. Pembroke did not have a meaningful attack during the first half and looked to have survived the first two quarters until they conceded a penalty corner in the last minute of the half. From this an attempted Bann switch lead to another corner from which Matthew Bell ripped a powerful flick into the top right corner to give Bann a deserved if somewhat belated lead. Half Time Banbridge 1 Pembroke 0 At the start of the second half Pembroke attempted to up the tempo of their game bot the Bann defence held firm with Kyle Marshall and Matthew Bell coping well with any attacks. Gareth Lennox was only called on two occasions to clear his lines from crosses. Bann re-established their supremacy and should have extended their lead on more than one occasion but a combination of poor finishing and bad luck kept the score to one nil. As the game progressed the travelling Bann support became increasingly concerned that the home team might steal a point that they would scarcely have deserved when, with 10 minutes remaining Fraser Mills raced clear of his marker, got to the baseline and pulled the ball back for a diving Johnny McKee to steer home past the diving keeper. Bann comfortably saw out the remains few minutes to secure three valuable points. The result, and others elsewhere, sees Bann go into the first local derby of the season against Lisnagarvey next Sunday as joint league leaders with their Comber Road rivals.
