DEAR
PARENTS
& CAREGIVERS
School closes Friday 3.00pm for the holidays
School reopens Monday 14th October
Important Dates for term 4 are now on the calendar on the website.
Welcome to Hunter, Cadel, Stella, Hannah and Cate our new entrants who have started
school in room 24.
Each child will bring home 2 books of raffle tickets to sell. These are being given
out today. Please help us by selling the tickets. More ticket books can be collected
from the office for families who wish to sell in the holidays. We appreciated the hard
work families put in last year. All money raised will go to purchase another set of
ipads for use across the school. This is in response to requests from children and
teachers for greater access to support teaching and learning programmes.
Children who sell 20 or more books go in a draw for a personal ipad. The class who
sells the most go in a draw for an extra ipad for their classroom.
NEXT PTA MEETING

After one postponement, we ended up with a perfect day for the HNS Cross Country.
Well done to all the children who took part, it was a challenging course and everyone did
very well. The top six girls and boys from each year then went on to participate in the
Inter-school Cross Country held on a farm near Tauwhare School last week. We had
some great placings which are laid out below. Well done team.

SENIOR SCHOOL LEARNING CELEBRATION
Parents/whanu are welcome to attend in the hall Thursday (tomorrow) at 1.30 pm. This is one
way our students showcase their learning from the term. It allows parents/whanau to see the
breadth of learning in the school curriculum.

BLENDED eLEARNING AT HILLCREST NORMAL SCHOOL
For the past 2 years the school has been working hard to develop a blended elearning approach
to teaching and learning at Hillcrest. This has been part of our school strategic plan with a goal
of:
Digital technology is a priority to support 21 Century teaching and learning as inquiry and highly
effective differentiated curriculum provision. It also supports effective management and
administration of student learning including a parent portal.
Teachers are incorporating technology into the curriculum alongside the more traditional ways
of working. So children are still writing in books, still researching using books, still making art
works however they are also becoming capable users of digital devices and can also access
reading material, research for information and make presentations in different forms using
these new tools. Likewise teachers are completing their usual range of assessments but are
also able to capture the process and products of learning in different ways using digital
technology. We have been working to make our student learning in its many forms as well as our
more formal assessment information available to parents through a secure web environment.
This aspect of our Ultranet portal will go live next term. It is not intended to replace parent
interviews, written reports or the wonderful opportunities our teachers provide for parents to
be a real part of learning.
Last week we were externally reviewed by Ministry of Education staff for our development
work in blended elearning and have received an exemplary report with a recommendation that
this is such a successful school that government ministers would do well to visit it.
COMMUNITY HELP NEEDED WITH ENROLMENTS 2014
We are asking all prospective in zone students to be enrolled before 1 November to allow us
organise classes for 2014. It is most important that our rising 5s have been into school and
completed pre enrolment. If you know families in the area who are expecting their child to
come to this school next year please check that they have enrolled. If you have older children
already at school please make sure that younger siblings have also had enrolment forms
completed for them. A phone call is all it takes. This year we had lots of surprise enrolments.
Thank you for your help.
REFERENDUM ON FLOURIDE BEING ADDED TO WATER
Hamilton City Council voted to stop fluoridation of Hamilton’s water supply in June this year. A
referendum is being held alongside the local body elections in October so Hamilton residents
can have their say about whether or not they want fluoride put back into our water supply. The
health professionals here at Community Oral Health strongly recommend you vote FOR
fluoride being added to the water when you get your voting papers. Community water
fluoridation is safe. It is effective. And most importantly, it makes a HUGE difference to the
health of our community’s teeth – especially children. Dental treatment is expensive and not
accessible to many adults for that reason. Community water fluoridation is a fair way of
providing at least baseline protection against dental decay for us all. The sound scientific
health advice overwhelmingly supports community water fluoridation. There is very poor
evidence against it. The most telling of which is that it has already been in our water supply
for the past 47 years with the only health effect being less tooth decay. For more information
about the health benefits of water fluoridation, visit www.waikatodhb.health.nz/flouride
ATTENTION ADULTS WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEARN TO RIDE A
BIKE!
Novice On-Road Cycle Training for Adults
This practical on-road session is for adults who can comfortably ride a bike in off-road
environments, but want to learn the basics for riding on quieter roads. In order to attend this
workshop you need to be able to ride with one hand for at least 3 seconds (so you can signal
turns), and also be comfortable with looking behind you while riding. The workshop will cover
basic safety and road rules (conducted in the school playground), followed by on-road riding
including how to pass a parked car, turning left and right at controlled and un-controlled
intersections, and navigating single-lane roundabouts. The course will be held on quieter roads
only. No traffic lights or heavily trafficked roads will be used.
