F-C20-009 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS No. 12 NITRIC ACID Nitric acid is an inorganic, monoconstituent substance. It contains as impurities water and nitrous acid (nitrous acid 0,0 – 0,5%). 1. Identification and classification Name: nitric acid …%; Chemical formula: HNO3 ECHA registration number: 01-2119487297-23-0045 CAS number: 7697-37-2 EC number: 231-714-2 Annex I “index number”: 007-004-00-1 Molecular mass: 63.0128 Nitric acid is classified as dangerous substance according to EC Regulation 1272/2008, being corrosive and oxidant. According to Regulation (EU) No 98/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 January 2013 on the marketing and use of explosives precursors, nitric acid is explosives precursors, than more the concentration limits value in Annex I, is restricted public access. 2. Technical quality conditions No. Characteristics Standard/Testing method Technical requirements 1. Aspect Visually 2. 3. 4. Content in nitric acid Nitric oxide HNO2 Density at 200C SR 447:1995 SR 447:1995 SR ISO 758:1995 Clear liquid, without particles in suspension min. 55% max. 0,1 % Min. 1,34 g/cm3 3. Testing methods • Aspect: visually • Determination of HNO3 concentration according to SR 447:1995 section 5.3. The method consist in titration of the sample with NaOH, in the presence of bromocresol green indicator. • Determination of nitric oxide content (expressed in nitrous acid percent), according to SR 447:1995 section 5.3. It consists in oxidation of N2O4 to N2O5 in acid environment (H2SO4) with titrated solution of KMnO4. • Density at a temperature of 200C is determined according to SR ISO 758:1995, using a thermo-densimeter or a densimeter and a laboratory thermometer. 4. Quality inspection For delivery of the product in cisterns, the size of a batch coincides with the capacity of a cistern, and for delivery of the product in small package, the size of a batch coincides with 300 tons for the same type of product. Elementary samples for quality inspection are taken from each cistern or from 5% of packages number, but from minimum two packages. Each delivery is accompanied by the conformity statement. Date of issue: 01.06.2015 Version: 8 Page: 1 / 2 At the client’s request, the product is accompanied by a test report. 5. Packaging and labelling the product Nitric acid 55-59% is delivered in plastic packages resistant to corrosive agents, glass, stainless steel (same as 304 L) which is loaded to max. 93% of package capacity. The packages must be clean and exclusively designed for nitric acid. The tanks must be equipped with nozzle for ventilation at the highest side, filling cap at superior side, emptying nozzle at inferior side; all enclosures must be made of stainless steel, and the gaskets mandatory made of polytetrafluoroethylene. The tank must be sealed, the checking is made at the beneficiary. Identification data for delivered product, is mentioned in accompanying documents. Labeling is according to the regulations in use. 6. Handling, storage, transport and guarantees Store in a cool dry area away from heat, fire, far from direct sunlight. Smoking in storage area is strictly forbidden. Keep away the product from substances and incompatible materials (diesel, gasoline, sawdust, straw etc). Containers shall be protected against corrosion and physical damage. Industrial and national codes for bulk and containerized storage must be respected. Regardless of used mean of transportation, is paid particular attention to the protection of packages against rollover. It is forbidden to use straws or paring. During transportation, stipulations of the ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), RID (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail) and IMDG (international sea transportation of hazardous substances) are respected. Danger labels which are placed on transportation mean are written according to specific legislation for dangerous goods transportation. According to ADR, RID and IMDG classification the product has the material identification number UN (ONU) 2031, danger class is 8, NITRIC ACID, except red smoke-producing nitric acid, containing at most 65% nitric acid. Term of validity: • 12 months from the date of loading for transport, mentioned in the accompanying documents, in compliance with specified transport and storage conditions. 7. Security Measures Personnel involved in loading and transport should be instructed in terms of job security regarding handling nitric acid according to exposure scenarios annexes of safety data sheet and mandatory equipped by the beneficiaries with individual protection equipment consisting of: antacid gloves, face shields or goggles. If the package burst, it is forbidden to use sawdust and dirt to absorb the nitric acid; leaked nitric acid can be made harmless with a mixture of fine sand. Product mixture is considered hazardous waste and must be disposed according to specific legislation. It is not allowed to use water as in combination with nitric acid it can cause injuries and burns. It is recommended that during transportation the personnel to be equipped with gas mask with nitrogen oxides cartridge filter and rubber gloves. It is prohibited to transport any other goods in the vehicles (tanks) transporting nitric acid. In case of events/accidents call immediately the local fire brigade.
