Honoring Masaaki (Masa) Tanaka
Masaaki Tanaka is the current Deputy President of MUFG, one of the largest and
most influential financial groups in the world. He assumed this position in 2012 after
serving as CEO for the Americas for the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU),
one of MUFG’s wholly owned subsidiaries and the principal revenue-generating entity
of the Global Business Unit. Mr. Tanaka currently oversees all business groups
of MUFG and he also serves on the Board of Morgan Stanley. Orpheus is proud to
honor Mr. Tanaka for exemplifying the orchestra’s ideals of collaboration, innovation,
and a passion for excellence. He has been a significant advocate of Orpheus on three
continents, enabling the orchestra to share its artistry with new communities
across the globe.
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
A standard-bearer of innovation and artistic excellence, the Grammy Award-winning
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is one of the world’s foremost musical ensembles.
Orpheus was founded in 1972 by a group of young musicians determined to
bring the intimacy and warmth of a chamber ensemble to the richness of a full
orchestra. The orchestra creates music without a conductor, utilizing a trademarked
democratic model of collaborative leadership. Through its performances and
engagement programs, Orpheus is proud to serve a diverse community of experienced
concert goers, casual music consumers, and the next generation of music-makers.
Orpheus presents an annual signature series at Carnegie Hall, tours nationally
and internationally, and commissions and premieres new orchestral works, reaching
over 30,000 people each year. This Season, the orchestra will tour through Europe to
Germany, Austria, Italy, and Hungary. Next year in June 2016, Orpheus is proud to
return to Japan for its 15th tour through the country.
Access Orpheus: Education and Engagement
Reaching close to 2,000 school children, the orchestra’s award-winning
Access Orpheus program engages public school students from all five boroughs
through in-class visits, invitations to working rehearsals, and free tickets to
Orpheus performances at Carnegie Hall. For many, this is their first opportunity
to experience a live classical music concert.
Orpheus is proud to expand Access Orpheus to communities on tour, nationally
and internationally, from middle school students in Sendai, Japan, to the
National Youth Orchestra in Cartagena, Colombia. By engaging youth in the
orchestra’s distinctive democratic process, Orpheus serves as an American
ambassador of culture and artistry. Your support allows us to provide worldwide
powerful artistic experiences to young people throughout the 2015-16 Season.
