Otherwise they have free choice, but must complete 24 points if they are in Year 3 and 30 points if they are in Year 4. (Please note the expectation for an 8 or 10 point piece of work will be higher – this work may well take longer than 1 week to complete). Please can they write the code on the homework task (L, N, A, H, M, O or I) and the number of points earned. Seven Ways to Learn I enjoy reading, writing and speaking (L) Points 2 Use an atlas and write a list of all the seas and oceans. How many can you find? You must do one of these I enjoy working with numbers and being scientific (N) You must do one of these Enjoy painting, drawing and visualising (A) Maths: Find the average temperature of each of the world’s 5 oceans. Write the temperatures in order from hottest to coldest. Draw or paint a rough or calm seascape. You could use water colours or try a different style of painting. E.g. Pointillism. Try to consider the colours you might use. 4 6 8 10 Choose 3 seas and/or oceans and write 5 facts about each. E.g. How deep, big, what creatures live there. Etc. Science: Choose 1 marine animal and show how it has adapted to its environment. If you were a marine animal or fish, which one would you be? Explain you reasons why. Create a glossary of ocean vocabulary. Include at least 10 words and their meanings. E.g. Current, coral reef, etc. Write a comparison between living in the sea and living on the land. This could be a story or a nonfiction piece of writing and should be at least 1 side of A4. Science: Find out about and record in an inventive way 2 different food chains for marine life. Include details of the ocean, country and habitats. Maths: Use the 4 rules to write 5 fishy word problems. Don‟t forget to include the solutions! Compare 3 different types of shark. Draw or paint a picture of them. Label the features of each that allow them to live where they do. Use collage to recreate your own shipwreck at the bottom of the sea. What fish swim around the wreck? Include these too. Try to use recycled materials. Create a sculpture of a marine creature or plant. E.g. A crab, seaweed, octopus, polar bear, penguin, etc. You could use clay, salt dough, papier mache, junk or any other materials of your choice. Try to be creative! Science: What effect does an oil spillage have on the marine environment and the coast? Find out about the effects and describe them in detail. Suggest ways of preventing oil spillages and how you would help affected areas. E.g. A newsletter, leaflet or poster. Make a 3D landscape model of a coral reef. It must include at least 4 features found on a reef. E.g. There are sponges, sea slugs, clams, crabs, starfish and sea urchins, jellyfish and sea anemones, coral, sea turtles, and many species of fish. Think of the reef as the “rainforest of the ocean.” I enjoy being active and doing hands-on activities (H) Design a new 2D logo for the Sea Life Centre. Create your own ocean quiz including at least 8 questions. Challenge your family and friends to answer them. Find out about the work of the RNLI and how they help to protect the people that live around and use the seas in Great Britain. Write a paragraph about the work they do. Create an informative poster teaching people how to be safe at the seaside. What warning should people be aware of? E.g. Flags, lifeguards, weaver fish, using inflatables etc. Bake and decorate some ocean themed treats. E.g. Biscuits, cupcakes. How might you decorate them? Write out the recipe and evaluate what you have made. What did you think of them? What did your family think of them? Bring in a photo of your final ocean delight! I enjoy making and listening to music and drama. (M) Find and listen to a song/piece of music about the seas or oceans. Draw the picture that comes into your head to describe the music. Find and listen to the National Anthems of two countries in the Indian Ocean. Which one do you prefer and why? Compose your own piece of ocean music, using an instrument of your choice. Either record your music or perform it to the class. Work with a partner or in a small group to create a rap or song to help you to remember the different oceans of the world. Write down the lyrics and present it to the class. You might like to video yourselves! Create your own musical instrument that makes the sound of the sea. What materials will you use? Could you use materials from the beach to create the sound? How could you decorate your instrument so it has a seaside theme? Challenge 3 different people to name as many different oceans and seas around the world, as they can in 2 minutes. Record their scores. Who scored the most? Visit the library, fish counter in the supermarket or the local fish mongers. Find out about one type of fish. Write a paragraph about it and draw a picture. Research, question, discuss and report back to the class why humans do not have gills. Work with a friend to research, design and make a model of a submarine that would take you to the bottom of the ocean. How will you make it sink and float? Paint, draw or make a model of it. Write a short „top trump‟ style fact card about it. Create an A4 travel leaflet about going on a cruise. Name the oceans and all the countries you will be visiting. Will it be hot or cold and what animals might you see?
