Perspective
Letter from the President
On behalf of The Scranton Area Foundation, I would like to thank
you for your continued support and friendship. Without your generosity, we would not be able to improve the quality of the lives
of people in our community. This past year, your charitable donations to The Scranton Area Foundation enabled us to award nearly
$900,000 in grants to non-profit organizations, community programs, and scholarships. Your contributions allow us to meet our
community’s needs in education, human services, arts and culture,
health care, and overall quality of life. For this, we thank you.
Throughout my work, I reflect frequently upon the meaning of philanthropy, which I have learned that by definition means a concern
for humanity; for our fellow man; and for the welfare of others. The
Scranton Area Foundation is fortunate to benefit from the generosity of our donors, each and every one who are philanthropists.
Your kindness, spirit of community, pride, and energy combine to
make The Scranton Area Foundation a powerful force for good.
2012 has been a year of transition and shared leadership but the mission of the Scranton Area Foundation remains
constant. The Scranton Area Foundation has learned to listen and respond to the voices of the people in our community, and the Foundation continues to grow as our donors and friends support our efforts to invest in the people
and programs of Scranton and Lackawanna County.
To our community, The Scranton Area Foundation means Trust. It means Compassion. It means Honor. It means
turning a Vision into Action. This has been such an important part of Jeanne Bovard’s legacy in our community,
and our leadership is committed to ensuring that this will continue.
I was born, raised, and educated in Lackawanna County. I share
a great sense pride in the heritage, culture, generosity and work
ethic of the people that have shaped our community into what
it is today.
I don’t think a more generous community exists. The Scranton
area is truly a special place, and I, like our Board of Governors,
am honored to serve.
Thank you for your continued friendship and support.
With great appreciation,
Laura Ducceschi

Vision
Vision into Action: New Funds Making
an Impact on our Community
Government Leadership Award Fund
The Government Leadership Award Fund was established and endowed
by the “Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast” committee. This is a merit-based award
given to encourage civic leadership and public service in Lackawanna
County, and the city of Scranton. The fund was established during the
50th anniversary of The Mayor’s Prayer breakfast to continue the legacy
of what was intended by the founders of this important event. The Government Leadership Award will be given to individuals whose employer is not covering the cost of the Leadership Lackawanna program, or
small business owners unable to cover the cost of tuition to Leadership
Lackawanna. Leadership Lackawanna was established in 1982 under the
guidance of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, and has graduated over 1,400 community leaders. Its mission is to enhance the skills
and knowledge of the area’s emerging professionals through premier leadership development programs enabling
them to better serve their organizations and communities.
#GaryInspiredMe Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was set up by the family and friends of Gary Lukasiewicz to provide scholarships to seniors
at public and/or private high schools in Lackawanna & Luzerne Counties planning to attend a four year college
or university.
Gary Lukasiewicz was an remarkable Riverside Jr.-Sr. High School senior . He touched people all over the U.S.
with his courage and bravery waging a two-year fight against cancer, and though he passed away in May 2012, he
is still giving back to students in our area through two new scholarships created in his honor.
The #GaryInspiredMe scholarships, which will be administered by the Scranton Area Foundation, will be awarded annually to students. This year, two scholarships will be awarded: One to a student from a public or private
high school in Lackawanna County, and another to a student from a
public or private high school in Luzerne County. The scholarships will
be awarded to qualified seniors planning on attending a four year college or university, and who embody the qualities of Gary Lukasiewicz.
Guidance counselors from each school are able to select one student per
school to apply for these scholarships. The Scranton Area Foundation,
Lackawanna County’s Community Foundation, is administering the
#GaryInspiredMe Scholarships.
Laura Ducceschi, President & CEO of The Scranton Area Foundation,
states, “As an alumnus of Riverside Jr.-Sr. High School, I am honored
that The Scranton Area Foundation is administering these scholarships
in the memory of Gary Lukasiewicz, who was such a remarkable person,”
She adds, “It is a significant honor for the students who will be selected
as these scholarship recipients, because what it means is that they have
many of the special qualities that Gary had.”
2012 Annual Report | 7
The #GaryInspiredMe Scholarships were started by Gary’s parents, Chester and Cheryl Lukasiewicz, of Taylor
PA. The scholarships are named after the Twitter hashtag, “Keep Fighting Gary”, which was started by friends of
the young man, and which was spread by tens of thousands of Twitter users. The Keep Fighting Gary movement
became prevalent in our area last spring, when tens of thousands of people were inspired not only by Gary’s courage but his incredible spirit and positive energy. Thousands of messages supporting Gary were posted on Facebook
and Twitter, with even public figures and celebrities tweeting their support for him.
Cheryl Lukasiewicz, Gary’s mother, noted how important education was to Gary. “Gary loved learning, and going
to school. College was a dream for him; he was especially looking forward to attending Villanova,” Cheryl said,
“We hope the scholarships can help the students get a start at fulfilling their dreams.”
Recipients of the #GaryInspiredMe scholarships will embody the qualities of Gary Lukasiewicz: Academic Excellence; Good Citizenship; Participation in athletics; and activity in a faith based or religious organization. Students must submit an essay on how they are an inspirational person, just like Gary Lukasiewicz.
The Scranton School for The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Children’s Endowment Fund
The Scranton School for The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Children’s Fund was established at The Scranton Area
Foundation to benefit students with hearing and communication difficulties who are enrolled at the school. This
fund was established by the generosity of two local businesses owners in our region.
Paul J. Schmitt, Sr. & Helen Stapleton Schmitt Memorial Fund
Friends and family established this fund in memory of Paul J. & Helen
Stapleton Schmitt. Grants from this fund will be used to benefit the Pennsylvania Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary.

Sustain
The Jeanne Bovard Administrative
Endowment Fund
The Jeanne Bovard Administrative Endowment Fund was established in 2012 to
Honor the legacy of Jeanne Bovard. This fund will be used to support the longterm sustainability and work of The Scranton Area Foundation, enabling our
community foundation to continue serving, supporting, and providing funding for
non-profit organizations and critical programs in Lackawanna County.
The Jeanne Bovard Administrative Endowment Fund will support The Scranton
Area Foundation as we meet our community’s most immediate and critical needs
and make long-term investments in the quality of life in Lackawanna County.
Ann & Leo Moskovitz
Celebration of Life Fund
In January 2003, friends of Leo and Ann Moskovitz established The Celebration of Life Fund to honor them for
their years of tireless service, dedication, and kindness to our community. The donors who created the fund wanted to
celebrate the many ways their generous spirit, creative participation, and dedication of resources have benefited the
Scranton area and warmed the hearts
of the Moskovitz’s friends. Over
the years, grants have been made to
benefit community beautification;
scholarships; and human service
needs in our area. The Scranton
Area Foundation is thankful to both
Leo and Ann Moskovitz for their
philanthropy which has benefitted
our community in so many ways.

The James F. Swift Scholarship Fund:
Leaving a Legacy of Support for the
Youth in Our Community
To date, through the James F. Swift
Scholarship Fund at The Scranton Area Foundation has awarded
$1,008,000.00 to students graduating from Lackawanna County high
schools. Thanks to the generosity of
Mr. Swift, these students graduating
from most high schools in Lackawanna County have received four
year renewable scholarship grants.
There are currently 71 active scholarships, including 53 renewed awards
and 18 newly approved awards for
incoming college freshman.
The goal of the Scranton Area Foundation is to award 75% of the Swift scholarships to students planning
to attend institutions of higher learning in our area, retaining our students in the region. Aside from the
educational support provided to students in Lackawanna County, this is another benefit in that it provides a
stream of ongoing matriculation at the colleges and universities of Lackawanna County, which was Mr. Swift’s
hometown.
The James F. Swift Scholarship Fund was created by Mr. Swift with a gift to the Scranton Area Foundation
in 2002. Mr. Swift knew the value of a good education, and wished to provide support for higher education of
young people in Lackawanna County. His scholarship fund will have a significant impact on the educational
opportunities for young people in our region, and his generosity will be remembered and appreciated by many
fortunate people as the years go by. Many students who receive the renewable award already directly understand the value of philanthropy and often indicate that they, too, would like to be able to follow in Mr. Swift’s
footsteps and help provide an education for students in the future.

FOCUS ON FUNDS
Lackawanna Pro Bono’s Funds at The Scranton Area Foundation Play Key Role
in its Ability to Do Critical Work Serving Clients in Need
Lackawanna Pro Bono, Inc. (LPB) provides free legal representation to people
living in poverty who have serious civil legal problems. It accomplishes this by
recruiting Lackawanna County attorneys to volunteer their professional services
and matching those attorneys with financially eligible clients. Its clients, primarily Lackawanna County residents, are people who have no place else to turn to
obtain the services of an attorney. A 501(c)(3) non-profit, the organization was
founded in 1997 by attorneys Carlene R. Gallo, Robert T. Gownley, Jr., and Jill
H. Miller, with the support of the Lackawanna Bar Association, to increase the
amount and scope of pro bono legal representation in Lackawanna County.
LPB’s clients are men and women of all ages and include the working poor, the physically and mentally challenged,
recipients of unemployment compensation and public assistance, and the homeless. Examples of LPB’s clients include
women seeking protection from abusive family members, families that are being evicted from their apartments, and
unemployed workers whose former employers are contesting their claims for unemployment compensation benefits.
By donating their services, LPB’s attorney volunteers work to resolve legal crises before they escalate into problems
for the entire community, provide clients with tools for making informed decisions, and advance equal justice.
Since the organization began operating, it has provided free assistance in over 2,500 legal matters, helping more
than 5,500 people. Over the years, more than 350 attorneys have volunteered their services to LPB’s clients. Approximately 200 local attorneys are active LPB volunteers, while others support the organization. The organization
is funded by grants, contributions, proceeds from fundraising events, and annual distributions from the endowment funds created for its benefit at the Scranton Area Foundation.
The first endowment fund at the Scranton Area Foundation for LPB’s benefit was created in 2002 by Attorney
Jill H. Miller and her husband, Attorney Thomas J. Foley, Jr., in memory of Attorney Catherine A. Foley. Subsequently, supporters of the organization, including the Margaret Briggs Foundation and an anonymous donor,
created a number of other such funds for LPB, named in honor and memory of various community members.
Since 2009, using proceeds from its annual Fundraising Gala, LPB has contributed to its existing endowment
funds and established two additional funds. The Scranton Area Foundation has supplemented contributions to
LPB’s endowment funds with partial matching grants. There are now 12 funds at the Scranton Area Foundation
for LPB’s benefit, with a combined value of approximately $350,000.
Pursuant to fund agreements with the Scranton Area Foundation, each year LPB receives a distribution from its
endowment funds. LPB applies the annual distributions to the costs of operating the organization and providing
its services. The annual distributions serve as a source of stable, ongoing funding, which adds stability to LPB’s
annual budget and enhances the organization’s long term sustainability. As a result, not only are the endowment
funds helping LPB provide urgently needed free legal representation to the poor now, but they will continue to
do so year after year. Looking ahead, to assure its ability to serve Lackawanna County’s poor indefinitely into the
future, LPB is continuing to seek support from the community to grow its endowment funds further.
One LPB client wrote, “Without the help offered through Lackawanna Pro Bono, I would still be lost and hopeless.” LPB’s Scranton Area Foundation funds play an important role in LPB’s ability to serve clients such as this
today and in the future.

Investing in Our Community:
Partnering with The Scranton
Area Foundation
Thank you to our Scranton Area Foundation donors, who are the heart
and soul of our community. Your generosity enables us to respond to and
meet Lackawanna County’s most critical needs, and to help to shape and
build the best community we can be in the future. Whether you choose to
make a one-time gift, establish a fund, or defer your gifts through a will
or other planned giving, The Scranton Area Foundation can help you find
the best way to meet you charitable goals and enhance the quality of life
for all the people in Lackawanna County.
The Scranton Area Foundation is a committed partner with you in supporting, serving, and impacting the community we love.
How do we do it?
The Scranton Area Foundation Unrestricted General Endowment Fund
The Unrestricted General Endowment Fund allows The Scranton Area Foundation to partner with donors in
making a difference in the areas that mean the most to them. When donors establish funds within the foundation,
it is the unrestricted general endowment fund which is used to provide a match, or percentage based donation, to
these individual funds, to help them grow. This means that we serve as a community partner with donors who want
to make a difference in their community. This is the Scranton Area Foundation’s commitment to giving back to
our community, and being a continual partner with donors who want to see their donations go even further, and
their community impact become even greater.
Donors who give to the General Endowment Fund allow The Scranton Area Foundation to meet and respond to
our community’s most critical and changing needs. Gifts made to the unrestricted fund are used to address a broad
range of local needs. It is your “Unrestricted” gifts to the General Endowment Fund which allow Scranton Area
Foundation to help our community, giving us the flexibility in directing grants based on a professional assessment
of our changing community. This enables The Board of Governors and staff to respond to the community’s most
pressing needs and emergencies, as well as to support the creation of innovative responses to community problems.
For this, we thank you.
Donor Advised Funds
Donor advised funds allow the option of a different organization, cause, or charity to benefit from the fund each
year. Donor Advised Funds allow you to make an outright gift to the Foundation and provides you with the opportunity to make recommendations to the Foundation for grants from your fund. Since the Foundation administers your fund, you are assured of its permanence and the continuity of your legacy. While legal control of the fund
rests with The Foundation, donors can be assured their advice is taken seriously. These funds are often an attractive
alternative to the creation of a private foundation. Investments, paperwork, and grant monitoring are all handled
by The Foundation. If requested, complete donor anonymity will be assured and maintained.
20 | Scranton Area Foundation
Donor Designated Funds
Donor Designated funds are funds whereby the donor selects a specific recipient organization or organization(s)
they wish to support. Grants will be made in the name of the fund as long as the organization remains in operation
and is consistent with its original charitable purpose. If, over time, a charity benefiting from a donor designated
fund goes out of business, becomes for-profit, or substantially alters its mission so that it no longer fits with the
donor’s original intent, you can be ensured that the Foundation Board of Governors will seek out alternate beneficiaries to maintain the donor’s original charitable goals.
Organizational Endowments
An organizational endowment helps a non-profit organization build sustainability into their organization for the
long-term. This type of fund is established when a non-profit organization agrees to transfer all, or part, of its endowment to a designated fund within The Foundation and, in turn, it receives quarterly or annual distributions of
income from the fund. When an individual establishes a fund to benefit an organization, it is a donor designated
fund. This partnership can bring investment economies of scale, expertise, and reduced fund management costs
to other non-profit organizations. The Scranton Area Foundation and non-profit organizations work together to
attract gifts to their endowment fund. SAF can protect an organization’s hard-earned endowment and insure it is
always available to support its charitable mission.
Scholarships
Many donors find the creation of a scholarship fund within a community foundation the simplest and most cost
effective alternative to a private Scholarship Fund. The Scranton Area Foundation manages numerous Scholarship
Funds that benefit a variety of students, educational institutions, and fields of study. Each scholarship is unique and
was created to fulfill the philanthropic aspirations of the original donor.
Field of Interest Funds
Field of Interest funds are funds whereby a donor designates a special area of interest or issue such as the arts,
education, health, a particular neighborhood or community, etc., in which grants may be made from the fund.
Memorial Funds
Any of these types of funds listed above can be a memorial fund. When a loved one passes away, keeping
their memory alive is a way of honoring their life.
Some people do this with actual physical memorials, while others prefer to set up funds. The gift to the
community is given in perpetuity, which means that
the name and interests of your loved one can live on
through the fund. When starting a memorial fund
at The Scranton Area Foundation, you can focus on
something he or she cared deeply about, such as education, child welfare, animal rescue, the environment,
helping people with a certain medical condition, or
other important needs. Establishing a Memorial Fund
is a simple option to direct gifts or donations from
friends or family members into a fund that supports a
cause that was important to your loved one.

Forever
Investing in Our Community
Planned Gifts to The Scranton Area Foundation
Life income and other planned gifts are ideal for individuals who wish to have a positive influence on the community long after they are gone, and may be created during your lifetime, or by bequest. If you would like to defer
your gifts through a will or other financial tool, the Foundation’s knowledge of local needs provides a convenient,
flexible vehicle for your giving, that makes a permanent contribution to the community.
Planned Giving allows the Donor to setup parameters during their lifetime which support the causes and charities
they believe in. At The Scranton Area Foundation, we recognize those individuals who have informed us that they have included the Scranton Area
Foundation in their will or other deferred giving plans. These individuals
become part of the Marion M. Isaacs Legacy Circle.
Marion M. Isaacs Legacy Circle
Marion M. Isaacs, a leader and philanthropist in Lackawanna County
throughout her lifetime, served as the Chairperson on the Board of Governors of The Scranton Area Foundation from the Foundation’s inception
until the end of her life. The Marion M. Isaacs Legacy Circle is named in
her memory in honor of her excellence in service to foster the well-being
of the people of Lackawanna County. The Isaacs Legacy Circle is meant to
encompass all who wish to leave a legacy for the future of their family and
their community, and to ensure that their own life’s efforts will continue to
make a positive impact as time goes by.
