St. Julia Catholic Elementary School School Council Meeting January 18, 2017 Attendees: Avril Metivier (Principal), Diana Linardic (Vice-Principal), Rossana Burns (Teacher Representative), Ashley Medeiros, Karina Gigante, Christi Chiera, Nobel Phipps, Tania Vilarinho, Augustine Lawrence MEETING COMMENCED AT 7:00PM Welcome- Ashley Medeiros and Nobel Phipps Adoption of Last Meeting Minutes by Ashley Medeiros and Nobel Phipps Opening Prayer led by Augustine Lawrence Administration Update Ms. Metivier indicates: - - The Catholic Board Learning Cycle Plan ran from 2013-2016 and has now approved a new plan to run until 2019 (presentation was made); all schools have plans with the board Teachers continue to attend workshops towards Math Education FDK has a new format in lieu of report cards there will now be a Communication of Learning; this is a more individualized look at each student, it discusses expectations in categories and there is anecdotal comments provided- next year it will be implemented for all 3 learning assessments; this is being implemented province wide and will benefit children as it is a developmental continuum that takes into account each child’s individual starting point before evaluative reports begin in Grade 1 Ms. Linardic indicates: - Lentin Mass is March 8, 2017 Rosary Apostles are attending until April The school is working on Youth Faith Ambassadors Peel Region Police Officers are attending the school to meet with children from Grades 4-8 - Junior Basketball, Chess, Science, Math Mania and Dance are all running- there will be a Dance event at the Rose Theatre All went well for the Christmas Season- outreach was successful, food, clothing and supplies were collected for families, some students attended Dr. Simone’s factory to assist School Council Business Skate Day Ashley Medeiros indicates: - - - February 25, 2017 from 4:30-7:00pm St. Marcellinus Guidance Counsellor has been contacted to try to arrange for volunteers for the evening, they will look into students that need to complete Community Service and get back to Ashley; we need 5-6 volunteers It is intended that there be a person counting attendees to the skate day so as to make future preparations easier Equipment- Mrs. Linardic will have it prepared the week prior to Skate Day, it is possible some of the grant will be put towards new equipment, there is $400 remaining from the pro-grant (need approval from Mr. Ferrao) Karina Gigante will order from Tim Hortons 50-100 Coffee and Hot Chocolate Ashley Medeiros will be the point person for the event Skate Day will be advertised in a flyer to be sent out by Mrs. Metivier Pancake Tuesday - Ashley Medeiros has spoken to Bobby’s Hideaway and arranged for the syrup and pancake mix; a donor is covering this cost 2.5 cases have been ordered, it was suggested this be increased to 3 given there were shortages last year All materials will be gathered a week prior to event, allotments for 600 people Spray and foil stocks need to be confirmed Ashley Medeiros will purchase 40 foil containers to transport the pancakes to the classrooms Volunteers are needed for 8:30am- 2 per station, 10 stations, need to provide griddle, there are 2 griddles at the school Mr. Reale knows where the stations are to be positioned so as to ensure no fuses are blown Each volunteer is to bring a spatula, scoop and bowl There are typically 2 buckets of mix per floor This year there will be an allergen alert station as the batter is not certified nut free, parents of children with anaphylaxis can choose if their child will participate - Volunteers need a current Criminal Reference Check on file, a Volunteer request will be sent out Movie Night - - Karina Gigante indicated concern that there were a lot of children unsupervised at the movie night; children were wandering the hallways and going to the bathrooms and on the stage to hang out; there were also children waiting to be picked up at the end of the evening It needs to be stressed that this is a community engagement event and parents need to stay with their kids In the future School Council will have people set up at the entryway as well as at gym doors to monitor attendees Nobel Phipps indicated that the January Movie night is cancelled ; April is the next movie night, if available the movie will be “Sing” Pizza Day - - Karina Gigante indicates that when buses were cancelled 2 weeks in a row on Pizza Day kids were collecting their pizza the day after and teachers were having to distribute it Mrs. Metivier indicates that if buses are cancelled pizza should be cancelled or delayed to another day Also Pizza Orders are due in February and it was discussed giving more lead time to parents to complete the forms Budget Report and Bank Account Review Chris Ferrao not present so this item was skipped Parish Representative Augustine Lawrence indicates: - - Youth Minister comes and talks to grade 9-12, they are considering opening this up to grade 8, Mrs. Metivier will ask Grade 8 teachers and discuss it with the priest when he attends The priest noted that the responses from children at the mass were minimal compared to other schools and he wants the teachers to assist the students to make better responses Other Business - Kindergarten Registration will happen at the end of January for the 2017/2018 school year February 15, 2017 will be the next meeting date Meeting Adjourned at 8:15pm
