2011 Annual Report Dear Friends, First, I just want to thank everyone who supports us - whether it is financially, being a Big, doing the necessary work on the Board or a committee, helping at an event, or helping at the office. We could not carry out our life changing mission without all of your support, so THANK YOU!! All of our supporters know how impactful 1 to 1 mentoring is on a child. They all know the value of the work we do and the importance it has in our communities. What an exciting year 2011 was but it can be highlighted by 5 things that demonstrate our commitment to quality and excellence in all aspects of our organization: •Receiving the Nonprofit Excellence award from the United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley •Jan Proctor, our Program Director, recognized by the Eau Claire Community Foundation as an Outstanding Achievement Award Honoree •Our Bowl For Kids Sake Fundraiser set yet another record for money raised •The Green Bay Packers choosing us to be a host for the Eau Claire stop of their Tailgate Tour •Moving our main office to a new location allowing for increased visibility and accessibility All of these highlights can be directly attributed to the quality of our staff, volunteers, Board members, committee members, and donors. Everyone involved has a stake in what we do and how it can change our schools and communities for the better through the power of mentoring… mentoring as done by the Big Brothers Big Sisters model. I want to thank everyone for making 2011 a successful year of changing the lives of children. CEO 2011 Packer Tailgate Party The Green Bay Packers selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin to host their Eau Claire stop for the 2011 Packer Tailgate Tour! Menomonie - 21 Pierce - 130 St. Croix - 56 The Big Move At the end of 2011 we were notified that we needed to vacate our Barstow Street location. This was a good thing for our agency because we had been wanting a new space that provided better visibility and accessibility for the community as well as parking space for staff. Thanks to our landlord, John Mogenson, who found us the perfect location at 424 Galloway Street. The location provided lots of space, plenty of offices and private meeting areas, great visibility for the public, and our own parking lot! We spent December in a whirlwind of packing the old office and prepping the new office. Thanks to the many volunteers we had, we were able to paint the entire office. Also a BIG THANKS to C&M Properties and Construction and Nationwide Floor and Window Coverings for new flooring for the offices and breakroom. Thanks to our many volunteers! We wouldn’t have been able to get the office painted and ready without your help! Without his father in his life, his time with Art and Sandy is just like that if he were to go spend time with someone like a father.” - Kristi (mom of a Little) Admin Expenses 13% Program Expenses 62% Big Impact Cole and Kia were matched in February 2011 in the Site-Based program and met for an hour each week during the school year. Cole was 8 when they were matched and was enrolled in the program because of some unique challenges. According to Big Sister Kia, “it is often difficult for him to communicate with others and social interactions are especially difficult for him.” Cole and Kia bake cookies, play board games, play carpet ball, but according to Cole his favorite thing to do with Kia is “play ping pong”. The focus of the Big Brothers Big Sisters matches is on building the relationship while having fun together. Cole’s mother, Jodi, has seen the impact this relationship is having on Cole. “Socialization was really hard [for him] and I feel that with this match it’s gotten him more out of his comfort zone. Also he’s willing to try new things. Before the match he wasn’t really willing to try new things, with Kia they try to do different things such as: carpet ball, making cookies, and things like that. She just exposes him to new things.” Jodi also says that “Cole’s gotten more confident and better with his communication skills since the match.” Kia has seen this with her interactions with Cole as well. “My relationship with Cole has changed and grown since I met him. In the beginning Cole was careful to watch what time it was and let me know when it was time for me to leave. He was happy I was there, but at 5:30 he was ready for me to leave as well. Recently, I have been going a little early or staying a little late and now nearly every time I see him his first question is ‘can you stay for supper tonight?’. He still always wants to know what time I am leaving, but when the time comes it is now followed with something more like ‘can’t we just play one more time’.” “Making friends and being with other people hasn’t been easy [for Cole] and I just feel that it’s made a big difference [in how he is] connecting with another person, especially with socialization being something difficult for Cole,” says Jodi. Bowl for Kids’ Sake Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the largest fundraising event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin. The 2011 Bowl for Kids’ Sake raised a net income of over $188,000 throughout 6 cities! Please help us thank our 2011 sponsors who made this event possible.
