Tool: Knowledge Management Plan (KMP)
Process that leads to reflection on the actions that an individual, team, or organization can
implement to improve knowledge management and transfer. As an action plan that attempts to
follow the KT performance of individuals, a team, or an organization, the KMP must be integrated
into the process for assessing performance and establishing the work objectives.
Uses
• Makes employees accountable for understanding the importance of knowledge management and
transfer.
• Lays the groundwork for a standardized process encouraging the organization as a whole to
manage and transfer its knowledge.
• Establishes a joint action plan for knowledge transfer (KT).
• Provides employees, supervisors, and senior management with a tool that facilitates tracking KT
improvements.
• Guides directions in matters of knowledge management and transfer.
• Develops a KT culture.
OHS Use
• Helps employees to understand how important knowledge management and transfer are in the
area of OHS; in other words, the safety know-how that must be transferred.
• Lays the groundwork for a standardized process encouraging the organization as a whole to
manage and transfer its OHS knowledge.
• Establishes a joint action plan for OHS knowledge management and transfer.
• Provides employees and employers with a tool to facilitate the tracking of KT improvements applied
to OHS.
• Guides direction in matters of OHS knowledge management and transfer.
• Develops an OHS KT culture.
Benefits
• Simple, structured, and easy to use.
• Can be easily adapted to organizations and their contexts.
• Includes the determination of action plans for the four knowledge transfer capacities.
• Incites employees to take part in transferring their knowledge as well as that
of their coworkers and the organization.
• Encourages the various stakeholders to become accountable for KT within the
organization.
When launching
• Develops a spirit of openness and sharing of a common goal.
Limitations
• Generates expectations that must be followed up.
Conditions
• Have the commitment and support of management and
supervisors at every level.
• Have all concerned employees take part.
• Acknowledge the efforts of participants following their
achievements.
