The French traded furs (mainly beaver) with the Native Americans and sold
them in Europe for large profits.

for gold. They planted cash crops such as tobacco. pg 159-161
New England Colonies
The northern region of the 13 colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
Connecticut and Rhode Island). They had many forests. They used
the wood for ship building. They also spent a lot of time fishing. pg 177
Middle Colonies
The middle colonies were also known as “The Bread Basket” colonies because
they grew grains and wheat. They had a mild climate and many farms. People
came from many different countries for many different reasons to live in the
Middle Colonies. These colonies included Pennsylvania and New York. pg 178
Southern Colonies
The southern colonies included South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and
Virginia. These colonies had rich soil which produced many cash crops. There
were large farms called “plantations” in the southern colonies. Slavery was
most prevalent in this region. pg 180
Pilgrims
Landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in search of religious freedom. The
Native Americans taught them how to survive by growing crops and using
the land around them. pg 169-171

Slaves were usually Africans who were owned by wealthy land owners. All
of the Colonies had slaves, however, because of the large plantations, the South
had the most. Slaves showed resistance by working slowly, pretending to be
sick or by breaking their tools and equipment. Slaves were traded and sold but
were rarely granted freedom. pg 224-227
Indentured Servants
Wanted to come to the “New World.” They would agree to work for the
person who paid for their journey to the “New World”. Once they paid
their debt, they were free to start a new life. pg161

The Native Americans helped the French fight the British in hopes that it would
stop English settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains. The British won.
