Colonial America Keep this in your HW folder Study a little each night St Augustine (Florida) Santa Fe (New Mexico) Spanish settlements that were established as missions to make a profit pg 233-234 French Settlements The French settled along the St Lawrence River and Mississippi River. The French traded furs (mainly beaver) with the Native Americans and sold them in Europe for large profits. Jamestown (Virginia) The first permanent English settlement. It was founded by settlers searching for gold. They planted cash crops such as tobacco. pg 159-161 New England Colonies The northern region of the 13 colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island). They had many forests. They used the wood for ship building. They also spent a lot of time fishing. pg 177 Middle Colonies The middle colonies were also known as “The Bread Basket” colonies because they grew grains and wheat. They had a mild climate and many farms. People came from many different countries for many different reasons to live in the Middle Colonies. These colonies included Pennsylvania and New York. pg 178 Southern Colonies The southern colonies included South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. These colonies had rich soil which produced many cash crops. There were large farms called “plantations” in the southern colonies. Slavery was most prevalent in this region. pg 180 Pilgrims Landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in search of religious freedom. The Native Americans taught them how to survive by growing crops and using the land around them. pg 169-171 Quakers Settled in Pennsylvania. They moved from England as a result of religious persecution. They did not support war. pg 179 and 183 Triangular Trade Route The path of trading between the 13 colonies, Europe and Africa across the Atlantic Ocean. pg 206 Middle Passage The slave’s terrible journey on ships across the Atlantic Ocean. pg 206 Slaves Slaves were usually Africans who were owned by wealthy land owners. All of the Colonies had slaves, however, because of the large plantations, the South had the most. Slaves showed resistance by working slowly, pretending to be sick or by breaking their tools and equipment. Slaves were traded and sold but were rarely granted freedom. pg 224-227 Indentured Servants Wanted to come to the “New World.” They would agree to work for the person who paid for their journey to the “New World”. Once they paid their debt, they were free to start a new life. pg161 French and Indian War The Native Americans helped the French fight the British in hopes that it would stop English settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains.
