This should be an ideal time to catch up with spring migrants. Thursday 29th May - Cwm Claisfer NR (Brynmawr) (F) Yet another new location for GBC. We hope to see upland species such as Redstart, Whinchat and Cuckoo. Sunday 15th June - Somerset Levels (F) We hope it’s dried out a bit. Hobby and Bittern are possibilities. Great White Egrets and Little Bitterns have nested here in the past. Wednesday 11th June - Llanwonno (F) Our annual trip to try and see Nightjars. Meet outside the Brynfynnon Arms (ST033956) at 8.30 p.m. Bring a torch and insect repellent. This forms part of the Wales Biodiversity Week programme. Thursday 10th July - Parc Slip LNR (F) A chance to see the new developments at this site. The breeding season should be in full swing. This reserve hosts a wide range of species. Good numbers of dragonflies and butterflies should be present. Sunday 27th July - Goldcliff & Uskmouth (F) Avocet and Little Ringed Plovers have been seen in the past. The reeds at Uskmouth should be alive with warbler song. High tide 9 a.m. Sunday 17th August - Burry Port & Kidwelly (F) Gulls and waders will be the focus. High tide noon. Sunday 14th September - Blackpill & Rhossili (F) Once again sea birds are likely to dominate. High tide at Blackpill is 11.30 a.m. Thursday 25th September - Goldcliff (F) A return visit to this site. Passage migration should be under way. High tide 9.20 a.m. Friday 24th - Sunday 26th - Portland (F) A weekend (Fri & Sat nights) at the Obs. in search of migrants. Only 15 places available - contact John Wilson to secure a spot. Sunday 1st February- South Gower Coast (F) A visit to sites such as Blackpill, Mumbles and Oxwich, with a variety of species possible. Tuesday 7th October - (I) Paul Bowden - Birding in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. Tuesday February 3rd - ID Night (I) Herons, rails and crakes (postponed from 2013-4) Tuesday 4th November - (I) Cate Barrow - Birdlife from Finland (& extras). Thursday 13th November - Penclaccwydd WWT (F) It’s been a while since we visited this site. There should be plenty of waders and ducks to see. High tide 11 a.m. Sunday 30th November - Labrador Bay & Dawlish (F) The former site is good for Cirl Bunting whilst the latter can be good for geese and grebes. High tide approx 12.30 p.m. Tuesday 2nd December - (I) Richard Smith - Central India and Sri Lanka. Saturday 14th December - Whiteford Point (F) High tide mid morning. Let’s hope the weather is kind after recent cancellations. Waders, geese and grebes will be the main interest. We usually finish the day at Llanrhidian to look for raptors, such as Hen Harriers, coming in to roost. 2015 Tuesday 6th January - Members Own (I) This is your chance to showcase photos, videos, CDs, DVDs etc. Please contact Paul Denning in advance to book a spot in the programme. Sunday 11th January - Bridgwater Bay (F) High tide 10.30 a.m. Expect plenty of waders, ducks plus birds of prey such as Peregrine, Merlin and Short-eared Owl. Thursday 12th February - Ogmore-by-sea (F) High tide 12.30 p.m. Ogmore always turns up something of interest. Purple Sandpipers may be present on the rocks with Goldeneye on the river. Tuesday 3rd March (I) Hugh Lansdown - Photographing Birds in Thailand Sunday 8th March - Goldcliff & Uskmouth (F) A return visit. Our winter visitors should be preparing to leave with the possibility that summer migrants may be on their way. High tide 8.30 a.m. Wednesday 18th March - Forest of Dean (F) Goshawks should be displaying. Other targets include Hawfinch, Marsh Tit and Crossbill. Sunday 12th April - Kenfig & Sker (F) Early migrants should be flooding in with swallows and martins over the pool and warblers in the surrounding areas. Tuesday 28th April - AGM & Quiz (I) Your chance to contribute to club affairs. The AGM will be followed by a quiz. Refreshments will be available. The paddocks at Cosmeston are good for winter thrushes, Snipe etc.
