The building has simple, wide eaves and plain façade. Windows have pained lintels and sills, but no other ornamentation. The western-most unit appears to have been originally built as a residence, as evidenced by the wide doorway and residentially scaled windows on front, side and rear. The second and third storefronts were also part of the original building while the last unit was added later. Several one-story additions were constructed at the rear of the building during the late 19th century, and a one-story porch on the west side was enclosed c. 1920s. History/Significance Likely built during the 1880s, this building was the original location of J.R. Williams’ Bakery and Soda Shop, a popular local gathering place for many years. J.R. Williams opened his bakery here in 1887. In 1900, a meat market is shown at #14, the bakery at #16, and a dwelling at #18. Since Sanborn maps show an internal opening between #16 and #18, it is possible that Williams lived next door to his bakery. By 1913, both 16 and 18 housed Williams’ confectionary, while the rear of the building was shown as an ice cream factory. Meeting with great success, Williams relocated to State St in 1927 and operated his business as Williams’ Grill. His former quarters were used as City Hall offices for a time in the 1930s. Sanborn Map Research Building is shown on 1894 map, except for unit #12, which was added before 1900. Several one-story rear additions existed prior to 1894.
