RUSSIA SFER‐04 (RU‐SF‐6.1 ) Moscow SFER‐09 (RU‐SF‐6.4) Moscow GREEN MOSCOW‐1 3/07 – 17/07 15 days GREEN MOSCOW‐2 22/07 – 07/08 17 days ENVI 9 international vol. ENVI 9 international vol. The project is organized by the botanical garden of the Moscow State University (MSU). This University is the largest University in Russia and one of the oldest. It was founded in 1755 by Mikhail Lomonosov, whose name was later added to the name of the institution in his honor. The botanic garden of MSU was founded at 1706. Then it was just a chemist’s garden. Medicinal herbs were grown there. In 1805 it was bought by MSU and since the middle of the 19th century exotic plants started to be grown in the garden. Classes for the students have been conducted since the end of 19th century in the botanic garden. During its lifetime a few thousands sorts of the plants were grown in the garden. Work: The main task of the work includes the rearrangement of two parts of the garden’s territory. The volunteers will have to take care of the garden and flower‐beds, to cut bushes, take away rubbish and to dig up ground. Also they will plant, and gather berries and fruits. One of the possible activities of the volunteers is helping to lead excursions in the garden. The new site of the Botanical Garden, designed for people with disabilities. The volunteers are expected to work six hours per day. And be ready for manual labor. Leisure time: Volunteers will be able to make a tour of Moscow, to visit the Kremlin and the Red Square, to visit other Moscow botanic gardens and the protected natural territories of the Moscow city and also famous Moscow museums. Different sport games, parties, play etc. Accommodation: The volunteers will live in the dormitory of the Moscow State University. Bathroom and kitchen are available. Novosibirsk is the third most popular city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. About 1,5 million people live there. Novosibirsk ‐ is a scientific, cultural, industrial, transport, trade and business center of Siberia. Scientific Center, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences are located in Novosibirsk. The biggest university is Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU), in which over 22 thousand students study. This city is called the center of science and students. Work: The camp is organized by the Inter‐regional charitable public organization “Siberian Environmental Center”. Main objective of the camp ‐ the ecological improvement of the Siberian river Izdrevaya and organizing events to save it. Volunteer tasks: ‐ Cleaning the river banks of debris, ‐ Rafting on the river and the installation of information boards about the importance of preserving the river, ‐ Carrying out environmental actions, ‐ The distribution of environmental newspaper for local residents, ‐ The organization of ecological festivals for local children. Leisure time: Volunteers will play in group and sport games, fish, walk in real Siberian forest. Accommodation: The volunteers will live in tents. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be cooked by cooks in the specially organized a field kitchen. The camp will be provided by toilets and showers. Language: English. Location: Novosibirsk region Extra: sleeping bags are necessary + medical insurance is necessary WHV‐11 SFER‐07 (RU‐SF‐6.3 ) Ulan‐Ude WHV – LAKE BAIKAL 15/07 – 15/08 32 days ENVI/ EDU 15 international vol.+ Russian vol. Lake Baikal in south‐east Siberia, the deepest lake in the world at 1,700 m, contains 20% of all fresh running water on the planet, making it the single largest reservoir. The lake contains an outstanding variety of endemic flora and fauna, of exceptional value to evolutionary science. It is also surrounded by a system of protected areas that have high scenic and other natural values. Baikal is one of the most biodiverse lakes on Earth, with 1,340 species of animal (745 endemic) and 570 species of plant (150 endemic). In the forests surrounding the lake there are an additional 10 threatened species along with the full complement of typical boreal species. The evolution of aquatic life that has taken place over this long period has resulted in an exceptionally unique and endemic fauna and flora. As the “Galápagos of Russia”, the lake is of exceptional value to evolutionary science. It`s very popular tourist area. And now there is a big problem with garbage. Volunteers every year collect, sort and export of garbage from the territory of the Lake Baikal coast. The first international ecological camp in Lake Baikal and Republic of Buryatia was organized by initiative group of Youth theater (city Ulan Ude) in 2001. After that this camp became traditional youth event and it is organized every year. In 2005 year Stationary camp ʺInternational Baikal shore Voluntary Serviceʺ was organized. The Voluntary Service controlled the territory for over 25 kilometers of coastline along Lake Baikal. In this year the camp is supported by UNESCO, Coordinating committee for international voluntary service (CCIVS) and the World Heritage Centre (WHC). Work: The main tasks of volunteers are: ‐ Organizing of Environmental Services (group of volunteers) to monitor the purity of the coast (raids along the coast, the raids in the forest belt and in open clearings, raids along the route, the raids in the villages). ‐ Organizing of various forms of environmental education of local people to inform local people and tourists about importance, unique and ecological problems of Lake Baikal. ‐ Collecting, sorting and export of garbage from the territory of the Lake Baikal coast. ‐ Preparation of special place for processing of wastes, implementation of processing work. W4U‐03 «World around us» (Tolyatti) 4‐17 July 2011, ENVI. 10 international vols; 18+ Language: English, Russian is welcome Location: Tolyatti is a city in the midland of Russia with wonderful nature, situated on the left bank of the Volga ‐ the longest river in Europe. Its population is about 1 million people. There are many forest‐parks in the town and suburbs and many town’s beaches. A beautiful reserve with unforgettable lakes, high trees and fresh air is situated on distance of 30 km from a town. In Tolyatti there’re many theatres, cafes, cinemas, museums and other places of interest. Work: The group task is to help with cleaning of town’s beaches. Attracting attention of people to ecological problem by making different shares and small representations on the beaches. We also will go to the reserve for helping with current work by restoration of the one. The group will spend there about 2‐3 days. The administration will arrange excursion in reserved places. The work usually takes 4‐5 hours a day. Accommodation: The group will be accommodated in student hostel, which is 30 minutes walk from the line of beaches (or 2‐3 stops by bus). There’re 2‐3 people in a room. There is 1 shower with warm and cold water. The group will eat in a university dining room 2‐3 times a day. There’s a kitchen in the hostel where it’ll be possible to cook. Free time activities: Sight‐seeing tours around Tolyattiʹs famous places, such as the Victory Park, the unique Man’s monastery; walk by the small ship along the river, visit to other town’s museums. It is very likely the festival of electronic music will be organized in the city during these weeks. Transportation: The nearest terminal is in Moscow. From Moscow you can come to Tolyatti by direct train (time spent traveling 18 hour ) or to Samara (time spent traveling 14‐16 hour) and than by train or bus to Tolyatti. Language: English, knowledge of Russian would be helpful Location: Ladoga is one of the biggest fresh water lake in Europe. It is situated in the Republic of Karelia in the north‐west of Russia. The islands of the lake have unique vegetation. It is home for many rare species animals and birds. The Ladoga’s skerries suffer from forest fires in summer time. It is great problem, because it takes several hundred years for a burnt island to recover fully from fire. We welcome to join us anyone who would like to make a difference in the situation with forest fires on Ladoga and at the same time have a holiday in one of the most beautiful places in the Republic of Karelia. The camp is based on the island Pieni‐Hepposaari. It is organized by the Voluntary Forest Firefighters Society which yearly sets up a camp on the shore of lake Ladoga and takes care of the islands and forest around Work: Normally there are 5‐20 Russian volunteers in the camp but their number changes all the time. There are not any fixed groups. Camp commander puts together teams depending on the task and general situation. There is large variety of tasks: − Detecting and putting out fires on National Park land; − Monitoring the land from motor and sailing boats. − Monitoring the land through binoculars from various islands. − Looking after islands (clearing away rubbish; setting up anti‐fires sings) − Running the camp (housekeeping tasks; help with meals preparation) Working hours: 3‐8 hours/day, however it can vary depending on current tasks and number of people. It is important to keep in mind that the main goal of this camp is to detect and extinguish forest fires ‐ it is priority task and rest of work, day routines and discipline are built around it. Accommodations: There are tents for 2‐4 people in the camp. Please, bring your own mat and sleeping bag and a tent if you have one. Laundry may be done in the lake. The food is prepared for the whole participants on camp fire or on gas stove. The camp is based on an island in the distance from civilization. Many participants of the camp are vegetarians so the main dishes are cooked without meat (and most likely without other non‐vegetarian products). There are meat and other non‐vegetarian products in the camp that may be added to food individually. Attention: alcohol in the camp is strictly forbidden. Free time activities: You may enjoy swimming in Ladoga ‐ the water is very clean but cold. In the evenings all team gather for chatting, playing guitar, games or just lying on the shore of the biggest lake in Europe gazing at the stars. Many people come to the camp for short periods so there are always new people to meet. Participants may go to the smaller camp in the other island for watching seals, rare birds and fishing. Normally participants go to a town only to get more food or petrol, but sometimes it is possible to arrange a trip to Karela – 11th century fortress based near the town of Priozersk. The trainings and lectures in sailing, driving motor boats, putting out fires, orienteering, first aid and tying knots will be organized during the camp time. Important: In the hot time there might be a lot of fires and most of the participants may not be on for evening recreational activities in the camp. Requirements: Good health conditions. Transportation The nearest terminal is in Saint‐Petersburg, from Saint‐Petersburg by train to the boat station, than by boat to the camp. W4U‐06 “Funny Fences ‐1” (Kostroma region) 17‐30 July 2011, ART, 10 international vols, 18 + Language: English, Russian is welcome Location: Nerehta is an old town with beautiful countryside and numerous churches that belongs to the Kostroma region – a 5 hours’ ride northeast from Moscow. Receiving organization ‐ International Youth Center Earth planet of people (Terre des hommes) – is a local NGO and specializes in recreational‐educational programs for children, art projects, and social projects in the home town Nerekhta. Work: “Funny Fences 2011” – is a big long‐term program, on‐going since 2010. Volunteers will make drawing and painting on fences and walls in any style they choose. They will also organize and carry out social events related to their work. Sometimes they will take part in repair works and do some cleaning. In the program will also take part other youth groups, some of them will work at the same time. The final part of the project will be a small fest for all the groups who took part in the project during the year. For additional info look: Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a cosy hostel‐type house, 4‐6 people in a room. There are showers and toilets on each floor. Three delicious meals a day will be provided for participants as well. Free time activities: There are plenty of activities you can enjoy in your free time – from cycling to swimming in the pool and playing table tennis. Craft workshops will be organized on the site. You can take part in any of the numerous leisure and educational activities in the children’s camp (for the kids 11‐16 years old), which is running at the same time. Version 3” (Pyazan region) 17‐31 July 2011, ENVI, 8 international vols; 18 + Language: English, Russian is welcome Location:Ryazan is situated in the center of the European part of Russia, is often referred to as the symbol of Russian province. Ryazan is an old picturesque town with many churches, museums and theatres. It was founded over 900 years ago. The Kremlin is the most ancient place of interest in Ryazan. Ryazan is a birthplace of a famous Russian poet Sergey Esenin. Some of the Nobel Prize laureates were born here too, such as academician Pavlov or Soljenitsyn one of the most famous Russian writers. The population is over half a million people. There are several national parks and reserves around Ryazan region. The National park ʺMescherskiyʺ is famous for the beautiful lakes and rivers (some of them are with ʺpeat waterʺ), coniferous forests, animals from the Red Book. Work: The Ryazan region is one of the Russia regions which suffered the most for the fires of 2010. Now it is necessary to clear away places of big fires, to prevent accident repetition. In nature it takes the forest from 20 till 70 years to rehabilitation The project aim is to accelerate these processes. Project tasks: • to clear away places of fires ( hard physical work) • to care of young plants • construction of fire‐prevention tracks • monitoring and prevention of occurrence of fires. We plan to work in 2‐3 places of Ryazan region’s forests with volunteer from all over Russia. Accomodation: Volunteers will live in tents and cook by ourselves on the fire. There are little shops near camp‐places Supermarkets and pharmacies are in Ryazan. The Internet points and post‐offices are also only in Ryazan Laundry and washing may be done in the lake. Sometimes it will be possible to use tourist shower or the shower in the school. Please bring working clothes, sleeping bag and tourist carpet, spoon, plate, knife, mosquito repellents, swimming suit, extra socks and underwear from wool and cotton, raincoat, closed ankle boots or trainers, wool sweater, scarf or sun hat, light, … cards with sights of your Counties & Cities, your favorite musical instruments (not big) ets. Free time activities: Sightseeing, international cultural events, friendly evenings with local people in very beautiful nature places, visiting Oksky Biospheric Reserve is the home of European bisons. Requirements: Volunteers have experience in tourism, renovation work, are really welcomed! Volunteers with heavy diseases aren’t recommended to take part in this workcamp, it could be hard to get to hospital very fast. Transportation: 3‐5 hours from Moscow by train or bus W4U‐10 “Golden cupola” (Yaroslavlʹ region) 2‐12 August 2011, RENO, 8 international vols; 18 + Language: English, Russian is welcome This camp is a great opportunity to get acquainted with monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries within the “Golden Ring” of Russia. The Golden Ring (Russian: Zolotoye Kol’tso) is a number of towns surrounding and including Moscow. They are considered to be the most beautiful in Russia, their beautiful Kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals and churches with unique Russian famous “onion” domes attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world. Work: This workcamp is run by the regional organization of “Russian Union of Youth” since 2000. This year we are continuing renovation of two churches. The work will include demolishing of the wall of the side‐chapel, different clearings to prepare the space for new contraction. The work is quite physically demanding. Volunteers will work together with Russian participants of the student’s camp, which is running at the same time. Work 6 hours a day except weekends. Accommodation: We will live in the sport hall of the school closed for summer, located about 5‐10 minutes walking distance from the work place. Meals 3 times a day will be provided by the school canteen (food is not vegetarian). Free time activities: Volunteers may enjoying hiking around the Nekrasovskiy area, where are many churches, monuments and beautiful nature of the Volga river. The trip to Yaroslavl’ – a regional center and one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the “Golden ring” of Russia will be organized Transportation: 4 hours from Moscow by train or bus W4U‐11 “Sacred Island‐1” (Valaam island) 14 August‐4 September 2011, AGRI/CONS 10 international vols, 18 + Language: English, Russian is welcome Location: Project takes place on the fantastic island of Valaam ‐ one of the most picturesque places and beautiful monasteries in the Northwest of Russia. It is sometimes called ʺMount Athos of the Northʺ. Valaam, surrounded by the archipelago of more than 50 beautiful small islands, is situated in Lake Ladoga. During its centuries‐old history, the Monastery has suffered from devastation and desolation several times. But, by Godʹs mercy, every time it revived. Last time it recovered in atheistic Soviet Union on December 14, 1989, when a ship with six monks moored in the harbor. Since that day, the new history of Valaam began. A lot of monks live here today, some of them renovate old churches, other work in the fields. People come to help them to save cultural heritage, and due to them a lot of churches of Valaam are already renovated. A lot of pilgrims come every summer to visit Holy Earth and to help in renovation works. Work: International volunteers will be integrated into a group of 20‐30 Russian volunteers and will work, eat and live all together. We will help monks in harvesting and cleaning the fields, grass cutting, preparing firewood and working in the garden. Volunteer should be ready to work hard. The work usually takes 6‐7 hours a day. Accommodation: In the dormitory (4‐20 persons per room). Monastery provides beds with blankets, pillows etc. You should take working boots, gloves and clothes with you, raincoat and long skirts & kerchief for girls. The monastery provides ordinary (with meat) or vegetarian food. There is only cold water in the dormitory, shower is available twice a week. Free time activities: During the free time you will have a chance to enjoy walking, swimming in the lake, visiting churches and temples situated in Valaam and learning about Russian orthodox culture. Requirements: Volunteers should be patient to orthodox religion, to follow dress code – for girls it is long skits, which should cover their knee, their heads should be covered by kerchief or something like this. Boys shouldn’t wear T‐shirts and shorts in the monastery – more details about dress code you will find in the infosheet. We can invite only volunteers with the good health conditions, because monastery is quite isolated and it is hard to get to a hospital in case of emergency. Transportation: The nearest terminal is in Saint‐Petersburg, from Saint‐Petersburg there is 3 hours by train to the ferry station, than by ferry to the island. RU‐ECZ 3 ANCESTOR’S PATH Arkhangelsk region ENVI/CONS 25/07/2011‐ 5/08/2011 14 vols Project: The project is organized by Moscow Ecological Center Zapovedniks and Kenozersk National Park. Kenozersk National Park is a model object, where the history and culture of the Russian North is preserved. Nature complexes and objects, numerous monuments of material and spiritual culture, architecture, monumental painting, icon painting, archeology, rich ethnographic material were reserved here. The historic‐cultural elements of the Park’s cultural landscapes (St. Groves, chapels, holy roods, dwelling constructions and household outbuildings etc.) are the objects with high value. It is original visiting card of the Park and makes it a unique region that has no analogue in Russia no in other Countries of the world. An international festival will take place in the Park 1‐11 July. Artists, painters, architects, sculptors, musicians, experts and restorers Work: Help in improving the ecological path “Ancestors’ Path” (make floorings), assist in landscape cuttings on the territory of Naglimozersky cultural‐landscape complex. Leisure: different workshops from local people, hiking, local museums. Accommodation/Food: You will live in the forest cordon “Izba Sedogo” (Grey man’s hut) and tent camp by the shore of lake Naglimozer. The nearest civilization (village Morschihinskaya) with shops, post office, the internet, first‐aid station is in 4 km. There will be “black” and “white” banya(Russian sauna) organized in village Morschihinskaya. WC outside. All the necessary products will be bought and volunteers will be provided with necessary plates and dishes for the cooking (on fire or in the stove in cordon) Vegetarian food is available. 20/08/2011 15 vols Project: The project will take place on two locations On 4 August volunteer will arrive at the Natural and historical “Bitsevski Park” (Moscow) and from 11th till 18th volunteers are going to work in National park “Ugra”. Bitsa forest is unique woodland which has managed to survive and hold its natural value in the very heart of Moscow. There can still be found rare species of birds and animals, which are unusual for Moscow, and numerous tree species as well. Volunteers will then arrive at the national park “Ugra” on 11 August. The Park is situated in 180 km from Moscow in south‐west direction. The most picturesque rivers in Great Russian flatland are part of the park. The banks of this river are green with oak forests, shadowy fir woods. They created the defense of Moscow State from Tatar attacks in 16‐17 century. In 2008 the museum, dedicated to this unique historical, natural, architectural and monument was created there. The main idea of the project: building the part of open‐air exposition close to the museum. Work: 2st week ‐ organize ecological and educational and sport events for visitors of the park, give help in improving the park territory (planting of greenery, cleaning of reservoirs, picking up litter) and developing the ecological centre of the park. 2nd week ‐ you will build wood and earth fortifications of Stolpitskaya fortress .All the elements will be made of logs – hard manual work! Volunteers will also weed and water young plants of oaks and other species of trees and bushes in a tree nursery of the forest area, which are necessary for reforestation of broadleaved woods on the territory of the park. Leisure: After work volunteers will be able to enjoy cultural and educational programme which will include city tours (Kremlin, Moscow Metro, historical monuments and places), visiting museums and churches of the capital and also ballet performances. In the second location ‐ visit some of the most famous spiritual centers of Russia – monastery Optina Hermitage and Kazanskaya Svyato‐Amvrosievskaya women’s Hermitage, Chertovo Gorodische, excursion to the estate of Obolenskie following the ecological path. Volunteers will also be able to meet the staff of the national park. Accommodation/Food: 1. In a school while working in the Bitsa park. You will live in the common room and sleep on mats (you have to bring with you a sleeping bag and roll mat). There is a shower and electricity. 2. In a tent camp, there are a river and forest nearby. There is summer shower and lake Lenivoe (7 minutes walking). Toilets are outside. Meals prepared by volunteers. Vegetarian food is possible. Location: first week –Moscow, second week –Kaluga region, national park Ugra Extras: Journey to Kaluga and backwards should be covered by volunteers (around 10 euro). Taganay is located in Southern Urals, on the territory of Chelyabinsk region. Work: Installation of wooden safety fences along the road (descent from the path is forbidden as there are surviving bushes at the top of Far Taganay, which are 300 years old); strengthening of roads and paths flooring; making and installation of small architectural forms (information boards and its supports, benches, signs and directions, spring and others) Accommodation/Food: Tent camp. (1 WC, water from natural spring, banya) Summer kitchen, the food three times a day. Vegetarian food is possible. Location: national park “Taganay”, Chelyabinsk region. Zlatoust city. RU‐ECZ 6 ALTAI APPLES Altai Republic 29/07/2011 ‐ 11/08/2011 ENVI/RENO 15 vols Project: Lake Teletskoye is the largest lake in the Altay Mountains. It is one of 25 deepest lakes in the world, having a depth of up to 325 meters. Lake Teletskoe is included into Altaisky Nature Reserve. There is a neglected apple garden on the territory of reserve, which is due to its location in the warmest spot of Siberia and vast territory (40 hectares) capable of providing vitamins with everyone in the republic. The idea of the project “Preserve the apple garden – and give vitamins to children” is a way to attract the attention of the public and government to the problem of changing climate and attract socially active groups: students, pupils, teachers to take practical climatic actions. Work: general work with local people and students from local University in apple garden. Also some renovation work in reserve. Leisure: different workshops on local crafts, hiking in mountains, boat trips, visit to local houses. Accommodation/Food: in tents in Jailu settlement. Meals prepared by volunteers. Location: Jailu is the centre settlement of Altai reserve. Lake Teletskoye, Altai Republic. RU‐ECZ 7 KOLOGRIV FOREST Kostroma region 30/08/2011‐13/09/2011 ENVI/CONS 10 vols Project: The project is organized by Moscow Ecological Center Zapovedniks and Kologriv Forest Nature Reserve. Kologriv is situated in the north‐east of Kostroma Region, 360 km from the Region centre and 640 km from Moscow. Work: Clearance of the path from fallen trees, branches and bushes on the restricted area of the reserve (4 km). Strengthening of the ground, building of a bridge across the stream Royushek and a suspension bridge across the river Londushka. Building of a site to watch beavers, Russian muskrat, European mink at the point of junction of the small rivers Londushka, Sekha, Lomenga. Clearing of the path on the area of the preserve (4 km) to the forest post on the river Sekha. 4‐6 hours a day (depending on weather conditions and health of the participants) Accommodation/Food: Camp site in the restricted area of Kologriv. There will be equipped summer shower, WC and kitchen. Volunteers will cook themselves. This work camp is close to the famous wonderful city St Petersburg. St.Petersburg is considered to be the city of the great Russian writer and philosopher Feodor Dostoevsky. The most famous works were written in this city: “Crime and Punishment”, “The Idiot”, “Karamazof Brothers”, etc. His characters walked along the streets of the city. The spirit of his novels soars in the air. Dostoevsky’s grandson is currently living in St.Petersburg. Meeting with him is quite possible. So this is a challenging question to say if St.Petersburg is recognized through the novels of Dostoevsky, or it is Dostoevsky who people learn about when come to the city. So that’s why we invite you to the wonderful city of St.Petersburg to get a closer look at the world and the language of the great Dostoevsky! The methodology of teaching based on using of linguistic‐cultured component. The teacher will be native speaker with the degree of bachelor of Philological faculty (specialty: “Russian as Foreign”). “Mir tesen” doesn’t provide any certificate. WORK: The group of people from different countries will be formed as in ordinary work camp, including living and spending leisure time together, but main idea of the project is to allow volunteers increase their Russian by taking part in informal study. The volunteers will have daily classes of Russian and also clear the St‐Petersburg parks. ACCOMMODATION: Promised in St‐Petersburg. Volunteers will cook themselves. LOCATION: St‐Petersburg. LEISURE TIME: St‐Petersburg – cultural capital of Russia. Leisure possibilities are various. There are many cultural places around place of living which volunteers can visit ‐ such famous cities as Lomonosov, Tsarskoye Selo; Peterhof; Pavlovsk; Gatchina. For visiting St‐Petersburg volunteers will be offered a special program. TERMINAL: Pulkovo‐2 International Airport is located about 17 km from the St‐Petersburg center. All the Railway and Bus Stations are situated in the range of city. St Petersburg has a well‐
developed public transportation system. SPECIAL REMARKS: The work camp will take place if quantity of volunteers is no less then 5. Deadline for sending application (VEF) –no later then 1 month before the camp. Volunteers have to know basic Russian and send the motivation latter. Volunteers should bring working clothes, swimming dress, gloves and sleeping bags. Besides it would be good to take something special from their country (photos, food and small things) for international party in the work camp and demonstrating others characteristic features of home country. PZ‐05 ENVI/RENO Camp: Baikal Dates: 01.08.2011‐15.08.2011 Group size: 10 + 2 CL (5M+5F) Aim of the project: The camp is aimed at maintenance and cleaning of touristic sites, campings and hiking routes. Chivyrkuysky Gulf on Baikal lake. Organiser of the project: young leaders of camping site on the Chivyrkuysky Gulf Work: cleaning rubbish, restoration of huts, painting, cutting woods, working with a hammer and a saw. Warm water as well as the perfect conditions for fishing and resting contributes a lot to the great tourist inflow at the shore of Chivyrkuy. That’s why the territory needs to be cleaned several times during the season. Volunteers will also clean a part of territory of the Barguzinsky natural preserve. The Barguzinsky State Nature Reserve is located in the Transbaikalia, on the western slopes of the Barguzin Mountain Range, which frames the lake. The Barguzinsky Reserve is the oldest and the unique state reserve in Russia, which was created before the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1917. The main reason to create the reserve here was a dramatic decline in population of the fur‐bearing animals, in particular, sables. To prevent total disappearance of these animals the government issued a decree to make this area protected. As soon as the reserve was created, the natives called Evenks moved to the Tompa River, to the north of the reserve and neighboring public hunters’ plot. Barguzinsky Nature Reserve is one of the territories inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage list. Location: Next to the camping site there is a small village Kurbulik with 20 houses in it, a shop and a food store. There is also a bakery. 2 hours car ride away from Kurbulik is situated a town Ust‐
Barguzin (7000 inhabitants) – the nearest civilized place in the area. Accommodation: tents. A few meters away from houses there is “banya” – Russian type of sauna. A few steps from it there are Baikal lake waters. Toilet is outside, but on the territory of the camping site. Cell phones connection is instable there and only from one Russian provider “Megafon”. Electricity is available from 7pm to 12 am. Bonfires are allowed. Food: national Baikal cuisine specifies on fish and sea dishes. Vegetarian food is not available. The local cook can prepare more than 10 tastiest kinds of meal from sea food. The local cook can give out some secrets of his cooking skills: volunteers can also learn many recipes. Volunteers will have an opportunity to cook by themselves and surprise locals with their national dishes. Please bring: moskito repellent, musical instruments, sleeping bags and mattresses, your favourite music. Please don’t bring: laptops and expensive cameras. NB! We strongly recommend you to take vaccination against tick encephalitis. ML and CV required! Participation fee: 250 EUR (includes transfer from the nearest city) Free time and leisure: thermal spa bath, boot rides, visit to the natural preserve, get acquainted with the local nature: plants and animals. Volunteers can collect berries and mushrooms available at the appropriate season under control of an experienced guide.
