Christ the King Newsletter August 2013 When you look at this painting of the Campbell’s Soup Can by Andy Warhol for the first time, you might exclaim, “This isn’t art!” The Campbell’s Soup Can is just the image that might evoke displeasure, an anticlimactic feeling, or utter disdain. A painting like this is so simple it seems anyone could paint it. The simple Campbell’s Soup Can that could sit behind the closed cabinet doors of a kitchen is presented on a canvas. This is just the sort of thing that makes art strange for so many people. How can this be art? Whether it hangs in a gallery, is ridiculed in a museum, or is viewed on the internet there is a simplicity, a whimsical allure, to the work of Andy Warhol. tions of the heart. This prayer, however, calls us into a world where the simple has beauty, and where the mundane has divine significance. Jesus leaves little to wonder, but much to appreciate when he teaches his disciples about prayer. What we are left wondering is not whether hallowing God’s name is important, or if forgiveness of sins is essential, or even if we should pray for God’s kingdom to come. Those things make sense in a faithful prayer. But daily bread? What does that have to do with the kingdom of God? If we are not careful we may treat this teaching like some treat Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can, as different from and not relevant to the world of art. So this petition about daily bread is not connected to the larger richer experience of the kingdom of God. The simplicity of Jesus’ words can cause us not to see the complexity of his petitions, how praying for daily bread can relate to the kingdom, can relate to something like helping the needy around us as a manifestation of God’s work or his love. A simple soup can. It reminds us not just to pray for our own daily food from the gracious hand of our heavenly Father but to recognize the fullness of the kingdom of God. We pray these words because God promises to hear our prayers. But we also live these words. Our lives become this prayer in action as Jesus There is no question that this is a prayer indeed. But calls us into a sacrificial love for neighbor that is simhow did the disciples not know how to pray? Before ple and unassuming. Drive around the city. In all my prayers for all for you, I always pray with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” Philippians 1: 3-5 Recently Nancy and I have experienced some very challenging, painful and at times devastating situations. We find ourselves unable to control or take charge of these situations and we are at a loss as to what to do, and many times we find ourselves surrounded by circumstances where there are no “right” decisions to be made, just difficult ones. We know many of you have faced or will face similar difficulties and at times we all feel like we are at a loss for what to do or where to turn. We thank God for our family and extended family and friends, who continually pray for us and I take comfort in the words of Isaiah 40 that were opened to me a few years ago in my Bible Study Fellowship class: “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” $168,000. We had some initial dialogue with them about the feasibility of CTK purchasing their home, and we are continuing those discussions. This is the last piece of property to the west available and owning it would give us total ownership and control of that block. Of course we are at this time only in discussions, and remember that only you, as the Voters Assembly, can authorize any real estate purchase. I will keep you informed as we move forward. Communication Our new phone system is in place, and up and running. What a terrific change! Voicemail, conferencing, multiple forwarding options, and much more on the menu driven system. When you call in you will still get a live attendant but will have multiple options as well. Facilities Many thanks to those who have stepped forward to take on several of our summer projects. The painting of the gym hallways and kitchen should be underway shortly as well as the replacement of the classroom/office windows in the CDC and faucets in the gym kitchen. Thank you, thank you! The next step is replacing the carpet flooring in the gym. This project has been approved and should be completed by September 1st. When you call into the system during office hours you will still get a live attendant but will also have a variety of menu driven options to assist you in communicating with the staff and obtaining information about CTK. Some of those options are: voicemail, conferencing, call forwarding, call waiting, staff directory, weekly activities, and many, many others. It will take a few weeks to get used to the new phones so your patience is appreciated, but what a nice improvement. Page 3 The King’s Call August 2013 Child Development Center News Sundquist Baby Shower & Potluck The Circle of Charity is sponsoring a Baby Shower Potluck for the Sundquist family to help prepare for the arrival of Amy Jo. Greetings from the Children; Summer vacation is coming close to an end and soon we will begin our new school year. We have much to get done in preparation of our new and returning students. There are many “projects” to start and finish, and we are so excited for the new project board our wonderful leaders have proposed. What a great way for our congregation to help serve! This year we are also eager to introduce our new school orientation process. This will be a time for families to come together to hear about our school’s policies & procedures and also about our church! Pastor Bob and I are working on bringing the children & families closer to God through baptism. It is a way to tie the CDC with our congregation and support the children’s life with God. As a new concept, we hope it sparks interest in our nonchurched families and brings them to a loving relationship with Jesus and a future home at Christ the King. We are optimistic that it will be welcomed and look to see growth, whether today or tomorrow, in the spiritual life of the families we touch each day. Together we can make a difference. Blessings to all who love and support what we do at CTK CDC. When: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 (If you are wondering why so close to arrival, it is so Melissa’s sister can attend the shower) Time: 6:00 PM Where: Christ the King’s Gym We will have a sign-up sheet in the narthex beginning the first week in August to bring a main dish or salad. Dessert will be provided. If you are wondering what the Sundquist’s need for Amy Jo, Melissa indicates that they have “baby equipment” from Emma and Cossette. The biggest need is for clothing (infant to 24 months), diapers, and misc. supplies. Many of you have already made something or have something special in mind which is great. There will be a money tree and card basket available at the potluck for anyone who would like to contribute a monetary gift. Most important is to come and share in the excitement of preparing for a new member to the Christ the King’s family! MILITARY MINISTRY In His Service, Barbi “Rosie the Riveter” Children’s corner: Carson, who is 8, never attended CTK CDC but his sister did. She just graduated from Kindergarten. In hopes of extending her time here, their mother enrolled them both in VBS. What happened next was a miracle. Carson fought the decision and made excuses why he didn’t have to participate, but by the third day, his mom was in my office in tears. She said, I am so happy, Carson insisted we pray now, talks to his friends about the Bible stories he’s learning at VBS and wants to start going to church. Blessings to CTK, and VBS. New Women’s Ministry Group Christ the King will be launching a new women's ministry group in September. This group will include women of all ages.
