Katniss doesnʼt get the chance to say goodbye to her family and friends before
leaving for the Capitol. Knowing she would not be returning home this time, she had a lot to say.
Katniss doesnʼt think she is very good with words, but you are! Write a letter as if you are Katniss to
either Prim, her mother, Gale, or Madge, telling them goodbye.

Chapters 13-14 Writing Activity - Context Clues & Teacher Suggestions
• On page 186, Katniss narrates:
! ! Since I donʼt plan on making it back alive a second time, the sooner Gale lets me go, the better.
I do plan on saying one or two things to him after the reaping, when weʼre allowed an hour for goodbyes. To let Gale know how essential heʼs been to me all these years. How much better my life has
been for knowing him. For loving him, even if itʼs only in the limited way that I can manage.
! ! But I never get that chance.
• On page 188 Peeta tells Katniss they can write letters, but she knows she never will:
! ...they were meant to go with embraces and kisses and a stroke of Primʼs hair, a caress of Galeʼs
face, a squeeze of Madgeʼs hand. They cannot be delivered with a wooden box containing my cold,
stiff body.
• Katniss wanted to use that opportunity to say goodbye to them, knowing she was going to
sacrifice her life for Peeta this time. Students should help Katniss find the words she has such
a hard time writing herself.
• Letters will vary, but they should include goodbyes and perhaps an explanation as to why she
has decided to sacrifice herself to save Peeta this time:
! -Because he is much better with words and able to inspire others through his speeches. "
" -He is unselfish, a born leader, and people listen and respect him.
" -In addition, her death--and martyrdom--will help all of Panem even more in her mind.
• An optional page for writing a letter as Peeta is included for students. You may have them write
both and contrast the different ways each would say goodbye, or give them a choice.
