There are three baseballs on the right of the plus sign. That’s two plus three or 2 + 3.
If you count them all up, how many baseballs do you have? Right! 5
This problem shows that 2 + 3 = 5 . You can use counting to add!
Below is a number line. It can help you add. It’s just like the number line you made by lining up papers on the
floor. It’s just smaller! Put your finger on 2. Now jump three more numbers to the right. First jump to 3 (follow
the arrow). That’s one jump. Now jump to 4. That’s 2 jumps. Now jump to 5. That’s 3 jumps.
Try it again on the blank number line on the bottom. Put your finger on 2. Now add on 3 more. Jump three times
to the right. What number do you end up on? Right! 5 2 and 3 more is 5. 2 + 3 = 5
