KINSELLA PTO NEWS Faculty Spotlight Mr. Ken O’Brien, New Principal Ken O’Brien has over 25 years of experience in both education and the performing arts. As an undergrad he studied acting, musical theatre and dance at the University of New Hampshire. Further actor training included Meisner, Linklater voice, Williamson movement, and Suzuki. Theatre allowed Ken to see and work in great places including Boston, New York, Berkeley, and right here in Connecticut. It was in the pursuit of an M.F.A in Acting at UCONN that first brought him to the Nutmeg State. It was a momentous decision as it was there that he met his wife who is also an actor and director who has dedicated herself to arts education. Ken has many years of experience as a director Volume 1, Issue 10 June 2013 Important Dates Last Day of School Friday, June 14, 2013 Summer School Monday, July 8th through Friday, August 9th Back to School BBQ Stay Tuned and choreographer. First Day of School Tuesday, August 27, 2013 Labor Day - No School Monday, September 2, 2013 Teacher’s Professional Development Day - Wednesday, September 10, 2013 Early Release Day - 11:15 a.m. Dear Kinsella Families, We have been through a lot of changes this year! Through it all, we have tried to listen to your concerns, come up with solutions and keep you informed. You were concerned about security, and while not perfect, we are working on our ongoing security plan for the school. You thought Mega Education/PTO meetings were too long. So, we separated the meeting dates so neither offering was too long. You wanted a chance to voice your concerns and we made an open forum part of every PTO meeting. You were concerned about communication....while still not perfect we have worked diligently to keep you informed. Yet, the one place where all the information you need would be shared....The PTO meetings...you don’t utilize! Therefore, we have put together a Kinsella Parent Survey on Survey Monkey. We want to start off next year knowing what you want and need! The survey is short...only 10 questions! So, please, please, please, take 5 minutes and fill this survey out online. Kinsella wants and needs our parents to be involved! You can place the web address below into your computer’s browser to be taken to the survey. It is also on the KMSPA.org website showing as a link on the home page! If you are unable to access the survey from a home computer, please stop by room 122 and we can help you do it! Students from grades 3 – 8 were selected to represent Kinsella in subjects as diverse as vocabulary, math and geography. Each team was composed of five members. Three members competed while two served as alternates. All Kinsella teams competed valiantly, but this day would belong to our fourth graders. Seven teams began the day of competition. Teams would compete against one or two other teams in each of three first rounds. The winners of the initial rounds would meet to determine who would go on to the District Finals! A team of five competitors Soraya Chanterelle, Jennifer Fomenko, Yusuf Jlidi, Savanna Stebbins and Captain, Claire Palmer competed in the Math Bowl. Soraya, Yusuf, and Claire competed. Jennifer and Savannah followed along working out problems on individual white boards. Using their whiteboards, dry eraser markers and ability to work collaboratively and listen to each other, Team Kinsella defeated Asian Studies in their initial round. The day’s final round pitted Kinsella against the winners of the other two first round matches. Going head to head against Burr and Webster, Team Kinsella was focused and determined. They worked together cooperatively and were the last team standing. Of the seven teams competing in Math Bowl that day, Kinsella’s team of Soraya Chanterelle, Jennifer Fomenko, Yusuf Jlidi, Savanna Stebbins, and Captain, Claire Palmer was the only team to go on to Finals. Unfortunately our run ended during the finals which showcased four teams. A strong start where neither team missed a question went into an elimination round. Kinsella’s team was caught in a tricky question where they gave the 8th number in a set instead of the required 9th. Full of good cheer and sportsmanship, Team Kinsella enjoyed snacks and continued to compete for the remainder of the fourth grade math competition, using hand signals to silently communicate answer choices. Asked what their favorite part of the competition is, Team Kinsella may have a hard time choosing between winning their matches the first day and the great food selections. Congratulations Soraya Chanterelle, Jennifer Fomenko, Yusuf Jlidi, Savanna, Stebbins and Claire Palmer! R.J.
