Annual Report 2012 Helping O th ers Help T h em sel ves A Year of Transition William Neal, President/CEO The year 2012 was a significant one for DDM. We said “good-bye” to several key staff members who retired after many years of faithful service to DDM and there were several sad “farewells” to long-time residents who either died or had to move to nursing homes because of deteriorating health issues. All of these were people we loved and who were an integral part of the DDM family. But we also welcomed a number of new residents and even added two new group homes in Jasper and Stone Mountain. And we’ve added a number of new staff members through a massive reorganization of our Residential Services division. It was definitely a year of major transition that brought both heartaches and joy! disabilities. Our annual trip to the Atlanta Braves game was changed this past year to a day with the Gwinnett Braves, allowing the residents to enjoy a picnic and a daytime game at the stadium in Lawrenceville. These events were such a hit that they will be repeated in 2013. The big change in our homes is that each of them now has a full-time coordinator who is assigned to that one home. Many of our facilities received major upgrades and/or new vehicles this past year thanks to a major grant from the Woodruff Foundation, along with other gifts from foundations and individuals. This annual report is the only printed piece that our friends and supporters receive every year. Because of the need to be economical, we have chosen to utilize our website and our email capabilities to spread the word about our ministry during the rest of the year. Our newsletter, The Helping Hand, is published six times a year and is available for free by email. If you are not on our mailing list, please send us your email address. We will be happy to mail a printed copy of this newsletter to those of you who may not have access to email. This past year was also marked by a number of new partnerships. For instance, we have developed a wonderful working relationship with another Christian agency, Wesley Glen Ministries of Macon. Our first joint effort was the 2012 Opening New Worlds Conference held in Macon last April. Other new partners include the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which has made it possible for us to get groceries at reduced cost to supply our group homes in the metro Atlanta area; and VSA Arts of Georgia, an organization that allows us to get free tickets for our residents and staff to a number of sporting and cultural events in venues around the state. With this report we send our best wishes to all our donors and friends. Your support has made a big difference in our ministry this year! We’ve made changes in the way we do certain things. For instance, in 2012 our St. Simons Beach Retreat which had been held every other year, was replaced by an annual week-long retreat at Camp Twin Lakes near Rutledge, GA. That, too, is a new partnership because Camp Twin Lakes helps to subsidize the cost of camping for our residents at a facility that was uniquely designed for people with William Neal President/CEO CARF Accreditation Renewed In 2011, DDM received another visit from the CARF team (The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) which comes every three years to do a thorough investigation of the organization to assure compliance with regulations and policies and a program that meets the highest standards of operation. Once again DDM received the highest rating possible and had its accreditation renewed for another three years. 2 DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 2 2012 Financial Overview 2012 2011 Increase (Decrease) Total Budget $3,784,500 $3,695,000 $89,500 Total Operating Revenues $3,770,310 $3,963,880 ($193,570) Total Operating Expenses $3,652,184 $3,702,515 ($50,331) have expressed interest and intent to provide for the development of the DDM ministry endowment through their estates. 2012 Financial Highlights DDM received a grant of $300,000 at the end of 2011 that was actually spent in 2012 in upgrading the agency’s vehicle fleet and making improvements to the group homes operated by DDM. Cathy had most recently served as director of DDM’s Church Services Department. In that position she was instrumental in organizing the agency’s Opening New Worlds conference, now held annually, as well as the very successful Special Needs Family Retreats, which are being expanded in 2013 to cover two separate weekends. Cathy has been the staff liaison with CARF, our accreditation agency, and has spent countless hours making sure that DDM receives the highest ratings for our ministry. A graduate of Valdosta State University and Mercer University, Cathy is married to Lloyd Humphrey and they are the parents of two adult children, Amanda and Baker. Rebekah Edmonds joined the DDM staff in early 2012 and has already made a tremendous impact within the organization. She handles Admissions, Policies and Procedures, as well as program planning for events like Opening New Worlds, the Special Family Retreat, and the residents’ week at Camp Twin Lakes. This year she developed special relationships for DDM with the Atlanta Food Bank and VSA Arts of Georgia. Rebekah is a graduate of Samford University and the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University. She and her husband, Chris, have a son, Jose. 2012 Retirements & Resignations Phillip M. Harshaw Rexine Howard Children’s Homes. In her years of service with DDM she filled many different roles, most recently as regional coordinator, helping to train and supervise direct care staff. Phillip M. Harshaw Phillip M. Harshaw retired in 2012, after 8 years of service as a program coordinator with DDM. He supervised the staff at several different homes in the metro Atlanta area, but was most notably connected to the Hess Drive Home in Avondale Estates. Prior to coming to DDM, Phil worked for 20 years with the state in various institutions and agencies that served the disability community. A graduate of Mercer University and Georgia College and State University, Phil is married to Kayse, and they have two children. Mary Sepe Mary Sepe resigned early in 2012 after more than 20 years of service with DDM. She was the assistant program director responsible for admissions and policies and procedures. A graduate of Georgia Southern University, she previously worked with the Dekalb County Board of Health. She and her husband, Scott, have a son, Ryan. Mary is the daughter of former Program Director Frances Stokes, and that entire family has been very involved in the life and ministry of DDM since its beginning. Rexine Howard Mary Sepe 10 Rexine Howard took early retirement in 2012 following 18 years on staff. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Rexine served with several school boards and on a church staff before joining DDM in 1994, when it was still a part of the Georgia Baptist DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES These three staff members represent a total of over 45 years of dedicated service to DDM and they will be greatly missed by their staff colleagues and the residents. • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 2 Special Needs Family Retreat Opening New Worlds Conference Each year the Church Services Division of DDM sponsors two anticipated events—the Opening New Worlds Conference and the Special Needs Family Retreat. with other families in similar circumstances and enjoyed moments of respite, family fun and inspirational workshops. Both these events are staffed by volunteers and made possible through the generous donations of individuals, churches, and foundations. The 2012 ONW Conference was held at Wesley Glen Ministries in Macon, which partnered with DDM to sponsor the conference. Families of the disabled and church volunteers from across the state attended a number of helpful seminars and the inspirational Friday night banquet included the choir called, The Miracles, who live at the Baddour Center in Senatobia, Mississippi. DDM and Wesley Glen will continue to partner together on ONW with the 2013 conference being held once again in Macon. After that the conference will alternate each year between Macon and Atlanta. The 2012 winner of this award was Mrs. Varion Spear, a longtime supporter of DDM and an advocate for the disabled. Mrs. Spear served two different terms on the Board of Trustees of DDM and served as chair of the Board. She has been a volunteer for many DDM programs, including the Special Needs Family Retreat, and is often a spokesperson for this organization at various meetings. Varion and Denny Spear have been married for 60 years. Denny Spear is a previous recipient of this award, and as a minister served as pastor of Dunwoody Baptist Church and was chaplain of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. As a pastor’s wife, as a mother of five, including one child with a disability, and as a community activist, Varion Spear has made a difference in the lives of the many people she has touched. Varion Spear joins the ranks of our previous recipients: James N. Griffith, Richard Davis, Howard Chatham, Denny Spear, Bruce Burt, and Frances Stokes. Each year an outstanding direct care staff member is honored for their service to the DDM residents. This award is named for Frances Stokes, who served for many years as DDM’s program director.
