Overview
This report provides headline figures from the Salary and Benefits survey conducted jointly
for CBI/TAF in Summer 2007, which attracted some 115 responses. It shows the ranges of
minimum and maximum salaries by grade plus an analysis of regional variations and pay
awards. The full findings are confidential to participants. Explanations of the terms used are
included on the next page.

Definitions
Staff Levels
Chief Executive (or equivalent job title)
Level 1 – Functional Directors (or equivalent)
A Director or senior executive responsible to the Chief Executive for a major area of activity or region.
Level 2 – Senior Management
A senior executive responsible for the day-to-day implementation of policy at the operational level and
will usually have a part to play in its formation.
Level 3 – Middle Management
Senior staff who normally report to a level 2 position holder or may occasionally run small or compact
functions or departments reporting to level 1. They are usually specialists with some years of
experience or seniority.
Level 4 – Junior Management
Staff with similar training and/or qualifications to staff at level 3 (to whom they are normally
responsible) but have less experience or seniority.
Size Bands
Small – Overall staff less than 10
Medium – Overall staff 10 to 30
Large – Overall staff greater that 30
Quartiles
In the salary data, the meaning of the quartiles is as follows:
The lower quartile indicates that 25% of respondents have a salary level smaller than the figure
shown and by the same token 75% have a salary level greater.
The median figure shows the mid-line in the range - 50% of salaries are greater than this figure and
50% are less than this figure.
The upper quartile shows that 75% of respondents have a salary level less than the figure shown
and by the same token 25% have a salary level greater.
