Potty training issues: As staff we can assist your child with “accidents” (changing clothes) yet we cannot assist your children with cleaning themselves (wiping bottoms). We will support, instruct and cheer your child on if there is a need for assistance. Please work with your child on this independent skill. BEFORE CARE AND AFTER CARE PROGRAM - School Aged Program Morse Street School (Grades K-2) Mast Landing School (Grades 3-5) Durham Community School (Grades K-5) We provide a creative and structured environment for before school and after school at the Morse Street School, Mast Landing School in Freeport and the Durham Community School in Durham. During the morning hours your child will be allowed to let their creative side flourish with a variety of craft projects and creative centers within the classroom. We also provide plenty of time after-school for your child to unwind outside, weather permitting, on each school’s playground equipment or gymnasium. Also, we do provide an environment for your child to do their homework and/or receive assistance with their studies. A healthy snack is provided during the aftercare portion of the day. ABSENCES/LATE ARRIVAL If your child will be absent or late, please call to let your child’s teacher know. This will help us plan our day and is especially helpful in planning. Your child’s absence will NOT reduce your weekly fee. If you do not arrive on time, and have not called, your child may miss a very important part of learning for the day. SNOW DAY POLICY Due to the fact that Laugh and Learn Childcare is located within the RSU5 Elementary Schools, we follow the school’s snow day policy. If school is cancelled within the district, we do not have care for that day. Please look for cancelations on area television channels and local radio stations. Snow days will not be charged on your bill. ARRIVING ON TIME Please remember that this is a business. If you suspect that you may be late in picking up your child, you will need to arrange for a back up person to come in your place. In the event that you use a backup person to come for your child, please call in advance and instruct this person to show their photo identification upon arrival. As a reminder, your child care hours are outlined in your contract, if you are scheduled to arrive at 3:30, please stick to this schedule as closely as possible. Some features that help insure your child’s safety are: INSIDE *Toys are age appropriate and in safe manner. *Electrical outlets are covered. *Knives and sharp scissors are kept out of reach. *Cleaners and chemicals are out of reach. . * Medications are out of reach. *A well-stocked first aid kit is kept near and expiration dates observed. *Providers are CPR and First Aid certified. *Fire drills are practiced with the entire school as well as classroom mock drills *Staff have been trained by Freeport Police Department to follow district wide Crisis Procedure OUTSIDE *Safe grassy area’s to play. *Playground free of splinters and harmful objects. *Safety approved play equipment and toys. *Children do not play outside unsupervised. EMERGENCIES In the event of an emergency with your child, you will be called, and if necessary the child will be transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. You will be responsible for all medical treatment necessary for your child’s well being. This is not limited to emergency room care, ambulance visits and co-pays to your insurance company. ILLNESS AND SICK CARE The health and well being of all of the children here are of utmost importance to all staff. It is for the protection of the children that we must insist on strict adherence to the Health Policy. Please read it carefully. If you have any questions or doubts, regarding the statements it contains please discuss them with Childcare Coordinator now. Do not wait until your child is sick to think about what would be best for all concerned. At that point you may be making the decisions based on emotion instead of logic. Even with all of our precautions children do get sick and or hurt. Due to our concern for all of the children enrolled in the childcare there are certain guidelines that we require our clients to observe. In some cases, if your child needs to be seen by a doctor, you will be required to submit a signed report from your doctor before your child can return to child care. A staff member will furnish you with the proper form. This is to ensure that a child does not return to childcare when he or she may be in danger of exposing someone else to an illness. Some contagious illnesses are no longer contagious after the child has been on medication for 24 hours. There are a number of immunizations required by law before your child may attend childcare. Upon application for enrollment you will be asked to bring your child’s immunization record. You will be informed of any immunizations that will be needed before your child starts childcare. Children with minor illness may attend childcare at the provider’s discretion. It is important to realize that if a child is unable to participate in the normal routine or needs more care than I can provide without neglecting the others in my care, that child must stay home. I know we both agree there are times a child needs to be with the parent for both physical and emotional comfort. There are also some illnesses that by law exclude the child from attending childcare. Some of those illnesses are but not limited to: Infectious Conjunctivitis Infectious Diarrhea Impetigo Chicken Pox Hepatitis A Scarlet Fever Scabies Lice Ringworm Strep throat The Childcare Coordinator would be happy to discuss the details of any of these infections with you at your request. When a child has certain symptoms, he should be kept home or in a special setting. Some of these are: FEVER A fever is a sign that the body is fighting some problem. The importance of a raised temperature depends on what is causing the fever. For example, if nothing else is wrong and the child had a DTP shot, the fever is not cause for the child to stay home unless it directly affects his or her ability to handle normal daily activities. There are certain times when a fever means a child should stay home. These include: A child over 24 months with a temp of 101 degrees or higher. In the event of this type of temperature, the child should not return until the temperature has been gone for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol. If your child awakes with a high temp and you administer a fever reducer, this generally only lasts a few hours and a staff will have to call you when you arrive at work to come pick up your child. In the meantime the other children have possibly been exposed to an undiagnosed illness. VOMITING OR UPSET STOMACH A child who has been vomiting can easily spread germs through vomit. The child may also need a staff’s help. The added time to clean up after the instance takes a staff’s attention away from the other children. If your child vomits while at childcare, you will be expected to come immediately to remove your child from childcare. If you are not able to come as soon as you are called, please arrange for someone else to pick up your child. The child must stay home until 24 hours has passed with no vomiting episodes. RUNNY NOSE Children with constant runny noses that are not caused by allergies may spread germs everywhere. They may wipe their noses on their hands, then rub them on their own and others clothing and on surfaces and toys. This is a difficult one to call. Please keep in mind how you would feel if another child’s parent brought their child to care and exposed your healthy child. These instances will be handled on a case by case basis. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Other symptoms of illness that will cause some concern are: Gray or white stool, Infected skin patches, difficult or rapid breathing, pink eye, severe itching, sore throat, severe coughing, yellowish skin or eyes, spots or rashes, dark urine, headache/stiff neck, and unusual behavior. We have on file information on several common and or communicable diseases often seen in a family childcare setting. If you have any questions please feel free to inquire. It is our wish that we may work together to keep our children happy and healthy. Some of the features that help insure your child’s health are: *NO SMOKING ON THE PREMISES *My health policy is strictly adhered to. *Current immunizations are required *Good hygiene is stressed at all times. *Favorite blankets or sleeping toys may be brought but kept for rest time. They are not shared with the other children and will be kept out of the daycare room. *Children do not bring action figures from home. *Every attempt is made to keep toys and play area’s sanitized. * Napping is done on individual mats. *Food preparation is done in a safe and hygienic manner. *Menu’s follow Federal Nutritional Guidelines. MEDICATIONS If your child is on medication and it must be administered while at childcare, the medicine must be in the original container and labeled with the child’s name, doctor, name of medication, dosage and when it is to be taken. We will also have a form for you to sign giving FRCE staff permission to administer the medication to your child. Medication will be given at the time or with the meal you specify and a written record kept. HAND WASHING Children’s hands are washed: Before eating. After use of toilet. When coming in from outside play. After coming in contact with a sick child and/or runny nose. After completing messy crafts or projects. Provider’s hands are washed: Before preparing food. Before and after giving medications. After assisting a child using the toilet. After touching body secretions. And about 100 other times during the day. Hands are always dried with single use paper towels. REST TIME We have rest time/quiet time each afternoon between the hours of 1:00p.m. And 3:00p.m. Children are not required to fall asleep, but many do. Please understand that no child is allowed to be excluded from rest time. Children awaken early and have a very active day. Quiet activities are provided for those that wake early from rest time. Mats are supplied for the children. Blankets or sleep companions may be brought for rest time. If you arrive during rest time, please quietly enter and keep your child quiet on your way out as to not disturb the other children. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR YOUR PRESCHOOL CHILD *A COMPLETE change of clothing for each child *A paint shirt Please label all items and they will be kept in your child’s cubby. PROPER ATTIRE Child’s play is messy work. Your child will be cooking, painting, playing on the grass and sand, and various other activities. Please do not expect me to keep your child’s clothes clean and free from stains. The latest fashions are cute and appropriate for fancy dress and photographs but not for childcare. The children will participate in all activities regardless of their dress. Please remember to replace your child’s clothing in their cubbies at least every 6 months to assure we have a garment that fits. We also request that you furnish sunscreen for your child will be playing outside a lot in the warm weather. TOYS AND PERSONAL ARTICLES FROM HOME We advise that toys from homes should stay at home. They create problems with sharing, as well as broken hearts when that toy gets lost or broken. Small toys also create a hazard to our smaller children. We are not responsible for lost, broken, or stolen objects that are brought from home. OUTSIDE PLAY When weather permits, we will play outside every chance we get. Please send appropriate clothing, if we have even one person lacking the appropriate clothing we will all be staying inside. Please label all attire with your child’s name. When weather is below 17 degree’s in the winter children younger than school age will not be playing outdoors. Please send your child in play clothes. We have lots of fun outdoors and don’t want to worry about grass stains in our new clothes. OPEN DOOR POLICY At Laugh and Learn Childcare you can always be assured that the door is open to you. Please feel free to drop in and check on your child, however keep in mind a child just adjusting to a new surrounding will want to leave with you when you pop in for a visit. These early drop-ins should be made when it is appropriate for you to take the child with you, or made when you can visit unnoticed as to not interrupt your child’s day. A child going through separation anxiety will most definitely react by a parent coming into the daycare and not taking them with when they depart. You are also invited to call and check on your child during the day. You may also communicate any information to the Child Care Coordinator via email. She will relay the information as soon as she receives it to your child’s classroom teacher. If you have email, please feel free to drop us a line. [email protected] TRIAL PERIOD The first two weeks of your child’s enrollment are on a trial basis. During those first two weeks either parent or provider may terminate this agreement at a moment’s notice. The important topic here is that both parties feel this is the best situation for the children involved. After the initial two weeks, a two-week written notice by either party is required to terminate this agreement unless there is a violation of this Parent Handbook or other required forms. See Below.. TERMINATION FROM LAUGH AND LEARN CHILDCARE If you decide to remove your child from Laugh and Learn, we require a two-week written notice. You are required to pay for these two weeks. If violations of this agreement occur, you may be given immediate termination from Laugh and Learn. Examples of termination of your child’s care include: (but are not limited to) #1 Failure of parents to pay fee. #2 Failure to complete and sign any required forms. #3 Lack of parental cooperation. #4 Failure of child to adjust after a reasonable amount of time. #5 The staff’s inability to meet the child’s needs without additional staff #6 Gross misconduct on the part of the parent or child. GOALS The primary goal of our program is to provide a loving, safe, stimulating environment for your child while you are at work. It is important that we work together as partners and that we feel comfortable discussing your child’s needs. We all look forward to a long and rewarding friendship with your child and family. As provider, we reserve the right to make changes in the child care environment without advance notice to parents, as long as any change remains within state licensing requirements and regulations. There may be updates to this parent handbook occasionally. We will give you a separate addendum as the need arises. Communication is the key; please feel free discussing your concerns with any of the staff. Thank you for your interest in finding the best possible care for your child! Welcome to RSU # 5 Recreation Community Education’s Laugh and Learn Childcare! AGREEMENT I have read and fully understand this Laugh and Learn Childcare Parent Handbook. I now agree to enter into this agreement with Laugh and Learn Childcare. I understand that the contents of this contract may be changed at anytime by Laugh and Learn Childcare providing two weeks written notice to me. Anytime a change is made, I will be given a new contract if I intend on continuing childcare at Laugh and Learn Childcare. I have received an exact copy of this Parent Handbook for my own records. Parent Signature______________________Date_______ Parent Signature______________________Date_______ Provider Signature_____________________Date_______ Laugh and Learn Childcare Illness/Sick Policy Fever Fevers are common in young children and are often a signal that something is wrong. If your child has a fever of 101.0F or higher, please keep him or her home. If your child develops a fever of 101.0F or higher while at the center, you will be called to pick him/her up. If your child’s fever is less than 100.0 F, you will be notified and you may express your wishes to the staff at that time. Our policy is that your child must remain free of fever for 24 hours before returning to childcare, and area pediatricians agree with this policy. This means that if your child is picked up at 3:00 p.m., but still has a fever at 6:00 p.m. or later, he/she cannot return to the center the next day. The 24 hours begins when your child’s fever has broken and remains in a normal range. Diarrhea and Vomiting Diarrhea due to illness is highly contagious. If your child has diarrhea, please keep him/her home. Our policy is that your child must remain free of diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to childcare, and area pediatricians agree with this policy. If your child vomits while at childcare, you will be called immediately to pick him/her up. If your child vomits at home either the night before or in the morning, please keep your child at home until 24 hours after the vomiting has stopped. When children return too soon, there is a much higher rate of recurrence and contagiousness. Coughs and Colds Colds are a common occurrence. However, there are some symptoms that warrant keeping a child home. These include, but are not limited to: bad cold with hacking or persistent cough, green or yellow nasal drainage, productive cough with green or yellow phlegm being coughed up. These symptoms may be present with or without a fever. If your child has just a cold, please notify their teacher. We encourage extra fluids and proper hand washing. If there are cold medicines you know will make your child more comfortable, we will administer them with your written permission. Please do not expect a teacher to keep a child with a cold indoors. If your child cannot participate in the ordinary daily routine, he/she is probably too sick to be in childcare. Fresh air with proper attire is always healthy. Rash A rash may be a sign of many illnesses, such as measles or chicken pox. In infants, an external rash may be a sign that something is going on internally. Please do not send your child to the center with a rash until the doctor says it is O.K. to do so. Doctor’s O.K. In some instances you will be asked to keep your child home until we have written permission from your doctor saying your child is well enough to return to childcare. Please understand this is for your child’s well being along with the well being of the healthy children at the center and their families. Bringing In Ill Children If your child is not infectious and your doctor has said they may return to the center, but your child is still not feeling 100%, please make sure you are able to pick up your child in a timely manner if the teacher feels that it is in your child’s best interest to go home. Medications If your child goes to the pediatrician and is prescribed medication, please keep your child home until they have completed 24 hours of antibiotic treatment. If your child is to receive antibiotics at childcare, please bring in the labeled bottle from the pharmacy and a syringe or other measuring device. We can administer antibiotics and other medications to your child with your written and signed consent. Well Child Assessment Every child should be assessed when entering the center. This is a state rule. We owe this to the families who pay for a state-licensed facility. If your child appears to have an infectious or contagious condition, i.e. pink eye, head lice etc., you will be asked to take him/her home or to a pediatrician to get checked out. Please do not be offended if your child is too ill to stay at the center and you are asked to take them home. If your child has had a rough night or previous day, please assess them before bringing them to the center. If you ever have any doubts about whether or not your child should be at childcare, please do not hesitate to call and ask us. The center opens at 7:00 a.m. and we would be more than willing to help you make that decision before you have to drop off your child for the day. Immunizations When it is time to schedule your child’s shots, please due so on a Friday or a day when you can be with them for the following 24 hours. Emergency Contacts We occasionally have problems with not being able to reach someone when a child is ill or injured. If you need to be notified because of your child’s illness or injury, it is imperative that we be able to reach someone. If you or your spouse/significant other are listed as emergency contacts, please make sure one of you can be reached at all times. If there is ever a situation where you know you cannot be reached, for whatever the reason, please make sure the staff has the name and phone number of another individual that can always be reached. We also request that if you are notified of your child’s illness or injury, you arrive at the center to pick them up in a timely manner. Please understand that an injured child requires one-on-one care. This is an impossible situation when our ratio is 8:1(preschool), 13:1 (in before care/after care). It is also extremely unfair to the ill or injured child to expect them to remain at childcare when they are hurting because we cannot reach someone to come and get them. We do understand and empathize with parents when their children are ill. It can be a very difficult, frustrating, and emotionally challenging situation when you are torn between a sick child and other obligations. Our staff also experiences these emotions and situations when they or their children are ill. These policies are designed to be fair to the ill child and their family, as well as our healthy children and their families. Please understand that we love your children and provide the best care possible for them, but we are not a sick day care. We are hoping to control the amount of illnesses at the center and to keep everyone healthy and happy. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call and talk to us at any time. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all of you who keep their sick little ones at home and comply with our policies. We appreciate your courtesy! In order to achieve this, we ask that you begin by letting your child know our expectations for their behavior at Laugh and Learn. Please review with your child the following rules: 1. Children will follow directions given by Laugh and Learn staff. 2. Children will treat other children and staff with respect; profanity, bullying, namecalling, or other hurtful verbal behavior will not be tolerated. 3. Children will keep their hands and feet to themselves; acts of physical aggression towards staff or participants will not be tolerated. In the event of disruptive behavior, a child may be timed-out and removed from the group. If the disruptive behavior continues, the parent/guardian will be called to help find a solution. Any further behavior discrepancies will cause the parent/guardian to be contacted and asked to pick their child up. The child will not be permitted to return to camp for the remainder of the week and a refund will not be given. At Laugh and Learn we have a zero tolerance for any acts of violence. If your child causes bodily harm, jeopardizes the safety of themselves, others or the environment (this includes running away from the group on outings) or is physically violent in any way, you will be called and asked to remove him/her from your child’s program within an hour on that day. Your child will be not be able to attend his or her program the following day.
