Re:
Mandatory Summer Reading 2016
Hollywood Academy believes in the importance of reading to strengthen fluency,
vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension throughout the summer. Therefore, Summer
Reading Assignments are once again upon us.
For the 2016-2017 school year, it is mandatory that all students:




Read the Required Summer Reading book for his/her entering grade level
Read a second book of his/her choice at grade level
Complete book reports for each book
Book Reports will be collected the first week of school. Failure to complete these
assignments will result in the student receiving zeros.
Your child has the opportunity to start working on their 2016-2017 Reading Treasures goal
over the summer. The goal for each child is to read 50 books over the course of the school
year. Your child MUST complete a book report for every book. You can use the Summer
Reading Book Reports or the Reading Treasures Book Reports for the grade level your child
is entering. You may go online to http://www.hollywoodcharter.org/schoolinfo if you need
additional copies of both reports.
Have a great summer!

Bud, Not Buddy
By Christopher Paul Curtis
In 1936, in Flint, Michigan, there lived a 10-year-old boy named
Bud. He was a motherless child who was on the run, but on a
very important mission. His mother never told Bud who his
father was, but she left him posters of jazz singers, such as
Herman E. Calloway, as a clue to figure out who his dad is. Bud
decides to hit the road to solve the mystery of who is father is
and nothing will stand in his way.
This Newberry Medal Award winning book will have you
laughing aloud as you meet all the interesting characters along
Bud’s journey that you will not want to stop reading
