Broken Sound Club
From The Finance Committee
We’ve had another good two months as business continues to
exceed expectations. Hats off to Mr. Crean and his staff.
Revenues for the first half of the fiscal year exceeded budget by
$474,000. This is primarily due to $350,000 additional Food and
Beverage revenue, which reflects the increased usage of our Food
and Beverage facilities by our members as well as increased banquet
sales. Golf revenue is also more than $100,000 over budget, which
is largely due to the charging of an annual cart fee as opposed to
a per round fee. This method of charging for carts is being
reviewed by the Finance Committee as well as the Board of
Governors for next year. Total rounds for the six months are
actually down 2280 rounds largely due to hurricanes in the early
part of the fiscal year (October 04- September 05). Management
continues to monitor expenses delinquently with reductions in
all departments. Payroll is down $14,000 on $473,000 additional
volume. Cost of sales both in the Food and Beverage department
and the shops is lower than budget even though volume increased
in all areas. Expenses in every department except the Food and
Beverage and the General Administration are down from budget.
Increased expenses in the Food and Beverage department are due
to $350.000 increased volume. General and Administrative
expenses are $60,000 higher than budget due to an increase in the
accounting staff at the advice of the C.P.A.’s as well as additional
professional fees.
As of this writing the insurance claim has not been settled.
However, we are optimistic that we will receive a substantial
portion of our out-of-pocket expenditures.
I would like to remind you again of our credit and collection
policies: All club billing, including assessments are due no later
than the end of the month the bill is mailed and delinquent after
60 days.
In the past month it has been necessary to suspend a number of
members for non-payment of dues and charges. This creates ill
will on both the club’s part and the member’s so we ask you to
please keep your account current.
Please address any questions regarding financial matters in writing
or e-mail to the Finance Committee at

Membership News
The staff in the Membership Department has been very busy this past
season processing new memberships. Since March 31, 2004 we have
increased our membership count by 34. Young families as well as empty
nesters continue into move to the community and are enjoying the
wonderful amenities at the Club. Also, we’re happy to see that many of
our members remain in the community and just move from one home to
another. It’s proof that Broken Sound Club is the best place to be in the
South Florida area!

Food For Thought
It has been a whirlwind season - party after party – each one more
exciting and successful than the next. It seems like just yesterday that
we left our temporary quarters behind and moved into the Main
Clubhouse. And here we are bidding a fair adieu to our winter friends
who are now enjoying a mild northern spring.
We wish them well and want all of our year-round residents to know
that the Food and Beverage Department will continue to offer the
finest quality food, service and ambiance for any occasion.
A very warm thank you to all of our members. We appreciate those
of you who booked your private parties with us and allowed us to
serve you on your special day. We are thrilled by your support, encouragement and enthusiasm this season.

GOLF MAINTENANCE
Happenings At The Old Course
As the season has wound down for another
year, I must say it has been a long process
of trying to make do with what we had from
a cool winter and a weakened golf course
from last year. I appreciate the support of
those that understood what we were up
against after the hurricanes and the poor
conditions left on the course.
It is hard to believe that a full year has passed since I was elected
Chairman of the Old Course Committee. The days have literally
flown by and this is my last communiqué to you as Chairman.
We anticipate the overall green quality to
get better for next season as both course
greens start to mature more and more. We
will also be pulling out all the stops to get
the tees up to tour quality. They will be
tight and thick for next season minus any
weeds.
Now that we have our own equipment and
will have finished our first aerification on
both courses in April we know we can bring
everything around to your satisfaction. We
have to continue the transition from the rye
overseed to our base Bermuda, and then
attack on all fronts. The fairways will be
the biggest challenge on the Old Course and
a bit less on the Club Course with the
tiftsport and sand based soil but we are up
to the task.
Besides the aggressive agronomic programs
to be instituted this summer, we also have
some aggressive landscaping to do at both
courses and some additional tees to add.
For those that will be staying through the
summer in South Florida, I ask for your
patience as we renovate each course four
times before next season. I also ask for your
help to keep the carts on the paths as much
as possible and follow the 90-degree rule
when posted to let the fairways get thicker.
Thank you for your support.
Joseph Hubbard
Director of Golf Maintenance
By the time you read this, the interior of the clubhouse will have
slate floors installed and the outside areas will be in the process of
having its final floor coverings installed. The locker rooms and pro
shop will be open, the parking lot areas paved and most of the
temporary facilities removed. The time table for the balance of the
clubhouse is tentatively set for completion by the end of June, at
which time we will have our permanent Certificate of Occupancy.
As previously stated, the dining room will not open until October;
however the bar area will be open as soon as we receive our Certificate
of Occupancy. Light snacks such as prepared sandwiches, hot dogs
and drinks will be served in the bar area during the summer months.
Your Old Course Committee is in the final stages of preparing its
recommendations to the Finance Committee and then, in turn, to
the Board of Governors, with its recommendations as to the best
possible use for the Water Money Proceeds.
In that regard, with the assistance of Joe Hubbard, our Director of
Greens, and Mr. Crean, we have retained Buzz Jaskela, a Landscape
Architect to thoroughly review our golf course, define all areas that
present potential problems, review the tree situation and all plantings
and make recommendations for improvement. Buzz has extensive
experience in golf course landscaping and has worked at Bear Lakes
Country Club, Adios, Lost Tree, Mizner, St. Andrews new course
and Sailfish Pointe to name just a few. Our golf course must remain
a priority so that it achieves the level that we deserve.
Other areas being addressed are the maintenance facilities at the Old
Course, which are in sore need of repair, and the machinery and
equipment that is currently in use and what additional pieces of
equipment are needed by our Greens Department to maintain the
golf course. Be assured that no monies will be allocated without
serious thought being given to its potential effect on our club and
that it will be in the best interest of our membership.
We are also hard at work in establishing the implementation of NonResident Memberships that was overwhelmingly passed by you.
However, there are many intricacies and considerations that must
be given thought to in establishing the rules and regulations. To
proceed with this class of membership, it must be done right the
first time and should not be rushed into.
I would like to thank all of you for your patience over the last season,
for your many comments that have assisted us and for your support.
I will continue working with the Old Course Committee in whatever
capacity they need me and will see the projects in process to their
completion. It has been my pleasure in serving as the Chairman of
your committee. The Old Course has a special place in both my and
my wife, Irene’s’ heart and we look forward to spending many good
times with you.

As a part of the aging process, we tend to gain an average of a pound
of body weight per year. However, the fact is we annually lose
about 0.5 pounds of muscle and gain 1.5 pounds of fat, leaving our
body composition with a change in the wrong direction. It is this
muscle loss that actually contributes to the fat gain. Muscle is very
active tissue, both at rest and during physical activity.

Our resting metabolic rate decreases about .5% per year in response
to this reduced muscle mass. By maintaining our muscle mass, we
will better sustain a healthier muscle to fat ratio, bone density, physical
ability and personal appearance. For all practical purposes, the only
way to maintain our muscle mass is to perform regular strength
training exercises. Strength training consists of free weight training,
strength training machines, body weight type exercise (yoga, push
ups, pull ups etc).
While other physical activity is quite beneficial for various reasons,
tennis, golf, running, walking, aerobic classes etc.., it is doesn’t offer
the resistance needed to put the increased demand for muscle gain.
These benefits can be achieved with strength training 45-60 minutes,
2-3 days a week.

the analogy of the ocean. The surface is
choppy and windy (like your busy life) but
10-20 feet below the water is clam. Tuning
into your breath is like going down to
calmer waters.
Tap Into The Universe Of Humor A sense of humor sees the fun in everyday

Women’s Club
Thanks to a wonderful Board of Directors for their hard work
and dedication to the Women’s Club. Because of their efforts,
our year was most successful, as exemplified by 321 women
attending the Gala Fashion Show (with thanks to the chairmen,
Lee Smith, Eileen Sands and Carole Armon), and over 120
members at each monthly luncheon meeting.
By January 2005 we were back in our own clubhouse again and
it sure felt good to be home at last. We received rave reviews for
our varied and stimulating speakers this year. Wasn’t Professor
Robert Watson charming and fascinating with his discussion of
The Wives of the Presidents? A huge turnout of 160 members
came to hear our own Blanche Feinberg share her story of being
“A Hidden Child of the Holocaust”. Everyone loved the
psychodramatists’ portrayal of generational conflicts. And we
celebrated our Gala Finale with a beautiful afternoon of Broadway
music.
Thanks go to the chairmen of our Out-of-Club events: To
Eleanor Weisman for the gambling trip to the Hard Rock Casino/
Hotel; to Rowena Kovler for the Miami Antiques Show trip; to
Shirley Feinstein and our docent-extraordinaire, Marlene Levin,
for making the Andrew Wyeth Exhibit such a success; to Carole
Armon for planning the Backstage Tour of the Kravis Center;
to Connie Reid and Cynthia Kamen for the Speakeasy Tour of
Miami, South Beach and The Holocaust Memorial, a wonderful
and moving day; and to Judy Haas for planning a lovely matinee
to the Caldwell Theater.
Much work goes into planning these many activities and we thank
you for your continued support of Broken Sound Women’s Club
(membership now totals 472). Wait until you see what we have
planned for next year! Check the Fall newsletter for the details.

Toby Tamarkin at 998-4222 or Adele Shinder

every month at different clubs. The dates for
the following games are April 14, May 12, June
9, July 14, August 11 and September 8. Please
contact Mitzi Weitzen at 241-6004 to sign up.

Mens’ Interclub Bridge Leagues
Broken Sound entered teams in two interclub
bridge leagues this past winter season. A total
of 30 men participated on our bridge teams. We
would have liked our won/lost record to have
been better, but there is always next year. Like
baseball, hope springs eternal.
Micki Mitchell, Sandra Silverman,
and Evie Searle
Roberta Roger and Jeanette Lampert
There are approximately nine matches during
the season and they are on either Mondays or
Fridays from November to April. We welcome
all male bridge players to the teams. Contact
Arthur Cohn, Marc Beresin, or Julian Sincoff,
co-captains.
