The major employment and commercial center for the region is Colorado Springs, which is proud
to be home to the United States Olympic Committee Headquarters and Training Center, the United
States Air Force Academy, more than 35 Fortune 500 companies, the historic Broadmoor Hotel and
the breathtaking Garden of the Gods. Offering a highly educated and skilled workforce, the area has
outstanding educational facilities and numerous military installations including Fort Carson – one of
the largest employers in the state.
The South Park National Heritage Area, one of only 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States,
encompasses 1,800 square miles of public and private lands that offer rich historical, pre-historical
and natural resources, including two state parks and a number of state wildlife areas, portions of
two national forests, national wilderness areas, as well as thousands of acres of working ranches and
historic mining districts.
Still active today, the Cripple Creek Mining District was formed in 1891 and has produced in excess
of 25 million ounces of gold. Long known for its outdoor recreation and the fossils, rocks, hills, and
valleys that make up Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, legalized gaming has also brought
additional visitors to the area.

Memorial Health System - a 583 bed hospital serving southern Colorado for
more than 100 years. In 2011, they had approximately 26,000 admissions,
322,00 outpatient visits, 136,000 emergency visits, delivered 4,600 babies,
and performed 24,000 surgeries. In 2012, Colorado Springs voters agreed
to lease Memorial to the University of Colorado Health (UC Health) to further
expand its health care services to the Pikes Peak region. This change in
governance is the first for the hospital since acquired by the City of Colorado
Springs in 1943. The City maintains ownership of Memorial’s buildngs, while
the organization’s employees and operations are of UC Health. UC Health
employs nearly 14,000 workers in the State of Colorado.
Centura Health - focused on connecting Colorado and western Kansas to
affordable, world-class care. Centura Health’s integrated network includes 15
hospitals, seven senior living communities, medical clinics, affiliated partner
hospitals, Flight For Life® Colorado, 13 Colorado Health Neighborhoods and
home care and hospice services.
Lockheed Martin Corporation - a global security and aerospace company
that employs about 116,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in
the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment
of advanced technology systems, products and services.
Verizon Wireless - world leader in delivering innovation in communications,
mobility, information, and entertainment. They provide broadband, video and
other wireless and wireline services to consumers, businesses, governments
and wholesale customers across the globe.
