2016 Theme: “Public
Works Always There” I
am elated and very
excited to have the
opportunity to lead the
PW Department for the
City of DeLand. The
Department is evolving
on several levels, with
Demetris Pressley
veteran employees retirPublic Work Director
ing (Richard Carpenter,
Clarence Goosby, Michael Kett, and Marlion
Thornberry), several leadership changes, an increased maintenance footprint, and introducing
new programs and software. Even with all of
these happenings, the Department is stronger,
our productivity and level of services are
higher than ever before, and new opportunities for personal/career development are
available!
This also is a reflection of the unsung heroes
whose deeds and efforts go without praise or
recognition. I have seen firsthand the unsung
and unseen heroes who are not in the
business of tooting their own horn or
engaging in self-promotion, but rather in the
business of getting things done. I did not
join the department to become popular or
famous. Instead, I am driven by something
bigger than me. Expressing and expecting
that the staff and I will have the inherent
impulse to help – to be a solution, an answer,
a fix, an example. Taking the 21st century
Public Works approach and making smart
solution methods accessible for the department
is my purpose.
As we close the 3rd quarter, we begin the fall
season which is our busiest times of year: the
budget process, Stetson Football, Downtown
Events, employee’s evaluations, and much more.
The Public Works department will continue to
work hard, promote safety, and provide quality
service for citizens and the community at large.
Have a fantastic fall season and thanks for
taking time to review our PW Newsletter.
Regards,
Public Works Administration
Meet the trio. They are the heartbeat of Public Works. PWA was
created to administer the training,
public welfare and to stabilize
purchasing power. We prepare
and monitor the capital and
operational budget for the Public
Works Department. We maintain
work orders through Cartegraph,
update various department policies, keep current Public Works
contracts and agreements, and
provide direct administrative management support for the Public
Works Director and other staff, as
necessary.

Safety by Maria Becker
Midyear is a good time to take
a look at the most frequent
workplace injuries, and how
we can prevent them. According to Travelers recent
Injury Impact Report, they
are:
 Strains and sprains
 Cuts or punctures
 Contusions (bumps
and bruises)
 Inflammation (e.g.,
tendinitis)
 Fractures
The leading causes of these
injuries include material
handling (32 percent);
slips, trips and falls (16
percent); being struck by or
colliding with an object (10
percent); accidents involving tools (7 percent); and
traumas occurring over
time (4 percent).
