We welcome ambitious individuals willing to play an active role in the work of our departments. The person appointed will be: able to teach French and Italian/Spanish to GCSE (with at least one of these languages at KS5) able to work as part of a closely collaborative team interested in exploring the potential of new classroom and media technology in their teaching conversant with the National Curriculum and with curriculum developments in language teaching committed to pursuing the highest standards possible It would be helpful if you could refer briefly to these areas in your letter of application, and comment on what contributions you could make. It would also be helpful to know what values and approaches you are committed to in the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages. The position will be largely based on one of our two campuses, though the faculty works to support colleagues across both sites through joint professional development, meetings and resources. There are excellent opportunities to become involved in developments across the federation. THE FACULTY We seek to provide all students with the opportunity to realise their potential, regardless of ability. We wish them to strive for the sense of achievement that one feels when mastering a foreign tongue, through experiencing structured teaching, rigorous assessment and expert subject knowledge. In an age of increasing globalisation, we provide students with the linguistic competence to communicate with others, while encouraging the use of media and communication technology to widen the scope of this use. With study trips abroad and the establishing of links with schools from other countries, we seek to put internationalism and language learning firmly on the map within the school. As part of this ambition we have thrice been awarded the International Schools Award by the British Council. In February 2013, lessons observed by Ofsted inspectors as part of a whole school inspection were judged to be ‘outstanding’. GCSE French A*-C results at Parkside regularly exceed the national average and at Coleridge they are improving. There are overseas trips in Years 7, 8 and 9 to Bruges, Paris and Nîmes respectively. In Year 10 there is an exchange with a school in Barcelona for students studying Spanish. Faculty members are also involved in sixth form trips to Austria, Russia and the United States of America. In the past, some of our students have also had the opportunity to take part in Comenius partnerships which have involved links with schools in Belgium, Finland and Hungary. We are pleased to have been awarded funding for a new Comenius partnership which will see our students working with 8 other European countries. We see involvement in enrichment activities as key to each child getting the most from their time at school and have been proud to have been involved with the local Routes into Languages consortium. We have encouraged student participation in the Spelling Bee, Languages and Sports event and GCSE Immersion Days. Students have the opportunity to study Latin to GCSE and to attend lessons and clubs in Mandarin Chinese, German and Greek. The curriculum on both campuses is undergoing exciting change as we aim to increase students’ cultural awareness and to create links via the eTwinning portal. We have also introduced a “Language Volunteers” scheme which has attracted a high level of interest within the local community. KS3 At Year 7, students are taught French in mixed ability sets corresponding to their tutor groups and then in Years 8 and 9, they are then banded into higher and lower ability groups based on their predictive scores. A very small number of students may not take the subject after consultation with the school’s Director of Equality and Intervention. French bilingual students currently receive extra support from a French teacher to support their needs and loosely follow the CNED programme. At the end of Year 9, we identify the Classe Européenne, who will go on to become dual linguists in French and Spanish. The sets are based on formative and summative assessment analysis from throughout the year, in conjunction with student data, e.g. Midyis scores. KS4 In Year 10, teaching classes are restructured, with sets based as much as possible on student progress and attainment. The classe européenne takes on Spanish GCSE and Core Humanities in French. The other classes take GCSE French. In Year 11, the teaching classes remain the same, with minor adjustments being made if necessary on the basis of progress in Year 10. Students continue to use the same course books as in Year 10. A small number of students with SEN are disapplied from French at KS4 and benefit from additional support for English and Maths in the Learning Centre. KS5 September 2011 saw the first cohort of Parkside Sixth students who have the option of following three different programmes of study. Members of the IEC Faculty have been delivering language courses within the International Baccalaureate programme. We are proud to be teaching courses in French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish. In order to supplement these language studies, we have been able to offer exchanges with a school in Austria and a school from the city of Nîmes. Sixth form students are currently involved in a Comenius project entitled, “Lots of Countries Just One Europe” which has allowed them to travel to Croatia.
