Avid BBQ connoisseurs, we immediately went in search of open pit, hickory wood smoked barbecue. What we discovered was that barbecue here consisted of shredded pork bathed in a vinegar sauce. We were accustomed to barbecue consisting of pork (both chopped and sliced), beef brisket, smoked chicken, turkey breast and, of course, pork ribs. Barbecue sauce, by our standards, was rich, smoky and sweet. Longing for what we were unable to find we decided to open Danny’s Bar-B-Que. Danny’s Bar-B-Que opened its doors on November 7, 1992, in a very small space with a real fire pit, homemade wooden picnic tables and counter seating. We had relatively no real kitchen space and eventually had to add an outdoor cooker to keep up with demand. After three years it became apparent that we desperately needed more space and the cooks wanted a space where they wouldn’t have to cook meats under a blue tarp out in the rain. For the next two years we operated this original restaurant, as well as a new one we opened on Ashville Avenue. Although it was hard and we still miss it, we closed the original Danny’s, but the Ashville Avenue location still remains to this day. My youngest son, Adam, is heading up the operation there. We have since added two additional restaurants. Our RTP location, the only one that is a lunch only operation, is managed by my middle son, Brian. The newest restaurant in Morrisville is being run by my oldest son, Kevin. I am, however, still the boss and tell the boys I’m not retired yet. I have enjoyed work from the day of opening and still to this day can’t really call it a “job.“ Danny’s Bar-B-Que offers a wide variety of smoked meats, traditional southern foods and our own four original barbecue sauces. 1) “High on the Hog,” a rich, sweet hickory sauce which, by the way, is our most popular. 2) “Mud Bath,” a mellow yellow mustard mop. 3) “Holy Sow,” a little sweet but also peppery vinegar sauce. 4) “Boss Hog’s Hot Spit,” needing no further explanation. Many customers even swirl different ones together creating their own versions. Twelve side items are available, as well as a variety of fried favorites. Real banana pudding and cobblers are available every day. It is our goal to serve consistently good food at reasonable prices so that everyone can enjoy our foods. We are a family friendly restaurant and offer a “Piglets” menu for children under the age of 10. Dine in and Pig Out are both available, as well as delivery and catering services for larger orders. We have now celebrated our 20th anniversary and we want to thank each and every one of our loyal customers for their continued support. For new customers, it is our sincere hope you will enjoy this different style of barbecue and become part of the “regulars” here at Danny’s. I look forward to meeting you and seeing you often.
