O U R M I S S I O N S TA T E M E N T
We believe God is calling us to walk in the ways of Jesus Christ
and to bear witness to the Gospel through worship and service, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
He Is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed! These are the words of the traditional
Christian Easter greeting, shared joyfully in the church during the season of
Eastertide, those seven Sundays falling from Easter until Pentecost. This year,
that means all of April and the first half of May. And what more joyous season
of the year could there be, than Eastertide and springtime, all rolled into one?
For me this season is particularly joyous because I recently had the honor of
becoming a first time grandparent, and the opportunity of meeting my new
little granddaughter, Angelina, down in Baltimore in the middle of March.
To see a new life emerge, to hold a newborn baby in your arms, to look into
her eyes and see a look of recognition already there in a baby who was only 24
hours old at the time was sheer miracle for me. It brought me back to the
experience of holding my first born child, Angelina’s dad Christopher, when
he was just a newborn nearly 32 years ago, and looking into his eyes it was
like looking into the miracle of life itself.
Eastertide is the season of the year when we celebrate the miracle of eternal
life, a life that transcends the earthly span of our years, a life lived in God’s
presence both here and beyond this world. For people of faith, life is not
limited by the bookends of birth and death; life includes both those events
as markers, as beginnings and endings of the chapter of life we know as our
earthly life. But Christ’s Resurrection, which we celebrate during Eastertide,
gives us the assurance that there is more to our existence than just the part
we know or understand. We are in the hands of the One who created all of
life, and who broke the bonds of death in Jesus Christ, opening for us the way
to the life eternal, a life made new in Him. Yes, He is Risen indeed.
Thanks be to God!

A NOTE OF THANKS:
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING:
GO THE EXTRA MILE
Thank you for your support to the United Church
of Christ’s One Great Hour of Sharing Lenten
Offering in the month of March. We are blessed
that God is able to provide when and where help
is needed through our giving, as $334.00 was
collected and distributed. OGHS brings survival,
new beginnings, hope and the knowledge that we
care for others. Thank you for being a part of this
faithful effort! As Jesus said, we are one. God
wants us to be one family, the kind of family
where we love each other even before we know
each other!
SANDWICH WORKSHOP
The 478 ham, turkey and cheese sandwiches were delivered
to Bristol Lodge on Sunday, March 6th. Financial contributions we received from more than 50 individuals funded
all the ingredients for the sandwiches with an additional
$180 of contributions which will be used to fund our ongoing support of the monthly meals. Your generous donations of food and time make our workshop a practical and
welcomed contribution to the need of others.
We were greeted at Bristol Lodge by Tony & Carlos who
assisted in unloading the sandwiches. They were very appreciative of the generous donation and asked that that I
pass along their sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to this effort. Tony mentioned that these sandwiches
would support 4 local shelters: the Bristol Lodge Men's
Shelter, the Bristol Lodge Women's Shelter, the Sandra's
Lodge Family Shelter & the Mary's House Family Shelter.

FUTURE MISSION TRIP TO H.O.M.E.
COORDINATORS NEEDED
Eight years ago, it was a great witness to send a
Payson Park Mission Team to Biloxi, Mississippi to
volunteer at Back Bay Mission. It was largely due to
the efforts of coordinators Cynthia and John Lasker
that this Mission was successful and an experience
that is fondly talked about to this today.
As we look to the future, it is our hope to offer more
opportunities to serve in this way, perhaps returning to H.O.M.E., Maine. H.O.M.E. (Homeworkers
Organized for More Employment) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1970 dedicated to keeping and
enhancing the quality of life for low-income and
homeless families. Through services, stewardship of
resources, and shared responsibility, they aim to
bring forth new possibilities for food, jobs, shelter,
low-income housing, education, and self-sufficiency.
In addition to building skills used in the job setting,
H.O.M.E. also enjoys the responsibility of educating
people on issues vital to sustaining an equitable society.
In order to sponsor such trips, we need a Mission
Trip Coordinator(s). This individual will oversee a
team of interested volunteer in the planning and execution of fundraisers, recruiting missionaries, and
coordinating travel arrangements. If you are interested in serving in this way, please speak with our Mission & Outreach Chair, Brian Cornwall.

EDUCATION & FELLOWSHIP
MEN’S BREAKFAST:
THEOLOGY, LITERATURE & COFFEE:
THURSDAYS, 7:00 - 8:15 AM
Come join TLC for a discussion of Peace Like a River by
Leif Enger on April 10 at 9:00 AM.
The Men’s Breakfast group has established itself as a
weekly event that many of the Payson Park men participate in and look forward to. Together we study the
lectionary scripture lessons that serve as the basis for
our Sunday worship services each week. This is a great
way for men to get to know each other better. The
group meets in the MacDonald Room church parlor.
Speak to Rev. Tom for more information.
The adult education group, “Theology, Literature, and
Coffee (TLC),” led by our ministerial associate, the
Rev. Bill Ragan, will continue to discuss Peace Like a
River by Leif Enger, published in 2001. It is not too
late to get a copy and join us.
The novel, narrated by an asthmatic 11-year-old named
Reuben Land, is the story of Reuben's unusual family
and their journey across the frozen Badlands of the
Dakotas in search of his fugitive older brother.
Charged with the murder of two locals who terrorized
their family, Davy has fled, understanding that the
scales of justice will not weigh in his favor. But Reuben, his father, Jeremiah—a man of faith so deep he
has been known to produce miracles—and Reuben's
little sister, Swede, follow closely behind the fleeing
Davy.
FAITHFUL REFLECTIONS:
THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY & DISCUSSION
Are you looking for a way to think about your faith and
how it applies to your most practical decisions? Would
you like a chance to talk about your spirituality with
other people? Faithful Reflections is a class that provides
just such opportunities. This group is led by our interim
pastor, Rev. Tom Forster-Smith, in a time of study and
conversation about the upcoming week’s scripture passage. Join them on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:15 am
as they gather in the MacDonald Room church parlor
for study & sharing.
Enger took the title of the book from the lyrics of the
hymn "It Is Well with My Soul", which was performed
at his wedding. He wrote the novel to amuse his family, taking story suggestions from his children and giving
the 11-year-old Reuben Land asthma to encourage one
of his sons, who also has asthma. Peace Like a River
bears more than just a passing resemblance to To Kill a
Mockingbird. In both novels, parents are a deep and
abiding mystery, and childhood, which once seemed to
stretch forever, is marked by self-awareness and a sense
of closure. Few writers are able to discuss adolescence
in such clear-eyed, yet rosy-with-nostalgia terms. The
novel offers plenty of opportunities for theological discussion about God’s will, miracles, and justice.
FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE FELLOWSHIP:
TUESDAYS, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
All women of the church are invited to join together in
the parlor each Tuesday, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Inspired by
the knitting of prayer shawls, this is a time of “sharing
and caring” in the spirit of “faith, hope, and love.”
Whether you knit or not, please consider coming once
or every week to get together with new and old-time
friends of the church.
Please feel free to contact Bill Ragan on his cell: 484860-4108 or at [email protected] with any
questions about this adult education opportunity.

MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE
Hello and Happy Spring!
“I'd like to give a special thank you to all the youth who
helped us celebrate Easter with their joyful music!”
Please mark these upcoming dates on your calendars:
April 17th, the Youth choir will sing Scandal of Grace
by Hillsong.
May 8 is Mother's Day, so all three choirs will combine
to sing Give Me Love in my Heart. A combined
rehearsal at 10:00 am in the sanctuary.
Our final Sunday is our annual Youth Sunday and will
feature all of our fabulous children leading us in worship! This is a highlight of our church school year, so
please plan to join us. Thank you all so much for your
support!
Three cheers for spring! The choir has enjoyed the
wonderful music that accompanies the season of
Lent and Easter and we are now looking to more Renaissance gems, some works of John Rutter and
some early American music to carry us through this
season of renewal. Keep your ears open for another
hymn sing sometime this spring! As always, all are
welcome to join us in the choir room for our 9 am
rehearsal every Sunday. It is a warm and welcoming
environment and singing always elevates the spirit! I
hope this note finds you all happy and healthy.

MUSIC COMMITTEE UPDATE
The music program at Payson Park continues to grow! Over the past year, we have added several new section leaders to the choir, invited congregation members to join the choir once a month as part of an “Open Sing,” and
hosted a Community Hymn Sing this past fall. Our children’s choir programs expanded to add an Alleluia Choir to
the existing Cherub and Youth choirs, and several of our Youth Choir members have added their instrumental as
well as their vocal talents to our services. We are in the process of scheduling repairs and maintenance on both the
organ and the sanctuary piano. We are so grateful for our wonderful music staff, Megan Henderson and Molly Jo
Rivelli, for not only their talent but for their devotion to the music program at our church. Both Megan and Molly
Jo have taken on additional outside responsibilities this year and we appreciate that they have chosen to continue
in their roles here at Payson Park. Our music program wouldn’t be the same without them! If you have any suggestions or comments regarding the music program at Payson Park, please feel free to contact any members of the
Music Committee: Sandy Philpott (Co-Chair), Pat Cappadona (Co-Chair), Winnie Snow, or Stephen Elliott.

CROSSROADS UPDATE
Six Crossroads leaders, joined by Interim Pastor Tom Forster-Smith, have volunteered to serve as the screeners
and interviewing committee reviewing applications for the newly created position of Community Engagement
Director. Out of the many applications received so far, several interviews had been scheduled as of the date of
this newsletter’s printing. The committee will report its recommendation on hiring to the Church Council, and the
Personnel Committee, made up of the chairpersons of each of the committees of the Council, will then interview
any finalist candidates presented to it by the committee of Crossroads leaders. It is hoped that a final decision on
hiring will be made sometime this spring. Look to next month’s issue of the Messenger for more details.
