License Renewals Effective House Policies New liquor licences take effect April 1, 2004. By the time you receive this bulletin most of you will have received your new licences. In the rare instance where we did not receive the required fees and renewal documentation by mid-March, a reminder letter was sent out to you. If you have not yet received your license(s), please contact our office at 667-5245 to review the status of your licence for the new year. Effective House Policies can go a long way to support responsible alcohol service within licensed establishments. Such policies provide formal support and back-up to both management and employees on procedures and practical tactics to be used in different alcohol service situations. Key components of an effective responsible service House Policy could include various aspects on: ♦ Monitoring the door ♦ Actively promoting and marketing food ♦ Pricing away from intoxication ♦ Server training ♦ Discretionary powers of staff ♦ Safe home transportation ♦ Setting a drinking limit for patrons ♦ Publicizing the establishment’s responsible alcohol service position. House Policies can be communicated to employees and others in booklet form, during employee training/ orientation sessions, and through public signage to patrons, using posters or ‘table talkers’. In effect, once a House Policy has been adopted it becomes an essential part of the environment in which you operate. Will you be eligible to renew ? As a reminder, a licensed premise must be ‘operational’ for at least three months of the licence year (April 1 through March 31 of the following year) to be eligible for licence renewal. All Liquor Stores will be CLOSED - Friday, April 9th & Monday, April 12th, 2003. Liquor Stores in the communities will also be CLOSED, Tuesday, April 13, 2004. Beer Trivia Synthetic Corks •Ancient Egyptians used to greet each other with the salutation “Bread & Beer”. •Over 4000 years ago in Babylon, it was the practice that the bride’s father would supply the new son-in-law with mead (honey beer) for the month after the wedding. Since the month was lunar based, it was known as the “honey month” or as we now call it today the “honeymoon”. •Years ago in English pubs, beer was served in ceramic mugs that had a whistle baked into the rim of the mug. When you needed a refill, you whistled, thus giving us the phrase “Wet your whistle”. •It was customary in the 13th century to baptize children with beer. •Before thermometers were invented, brewers would use their thumb to determine the right temperature for adding yeast to the mix. This gave us the phrase “rule of thumb”. •Today’s phrase of “mind your P’s and Q’s” comes from the time when beer was served in pints and quarts. The original meaning of the phrase was to be careful how much you drank. It acts like a cork, you remove it with a corkscrew, but it’s made of “plastic”. More specifically it’s made from “biomedical grade thermoplastic elastomer”. Well over 1000 wineries now use this type of closure on their wine products. The reason is quite simple; it reduces the number of bottles of wine lost due to “cork taint”. Industry figures peg the loss to “cork taint” or TCA (trichloroanisole) at around 5% to 7%. Wineries from Australia, South Africa, Chile and the United States are pioneering the use of synthetic corks while the “Old World” wine countries are content with traditional cork closures. For wine purists, synthetic corks are not an adequate replacement. In fact they would point out that in the short term the synthetic corks may work, but nobody has tested them over much longer periods of time. With the synthetic corks many traditions maybe lost such as smelling and examining the cork after the bottle has been “popped”, but nothing ruins an occasion more than a “corked” bottle of wine.
