effective skills that lead to positive outcomes.
“We are thrilled by this recognition of the high-quality
programs our centers and partners offer across the country,” said
Marciz Kerz, president. “We believe there are key elements of
educational excellence, including experiential learning, social
engagement and evaluation of results. By partnering with

Summer 2013
Monroe County Office for the Aging
The Monroe County Office for the Aging
(MCOFA) has served as the designated Area
Agency on Aging for Monroe County since
1973. It has the responsibility to plan, coordinate,
collaborate, fund, report and advocate for
community based programs and services that meet
the needs of Monroe County residents age 60 and
over, and their informal family caregivers of any
age.
Services are provided through MCOFA funded
sub-contractor agencies. MCOFA then monitors
these services annually to ensure service quality,
program effectiveness and positive outcomes
are delivered to those older adults. MCOFA
programs are primarily targeted to individuals with
the greatest social and/or economic need, with
particular emphasis on serving the low income
minority population that typically reside in their
own homes in underserved areas within Monroe
County.
6
Since 2005, MCOFA has also administered New
York Connects, the officially designated Aging,
Disability and Resource Center for Monroe
County. NY Connects provides information,
assistance, analysis and planning to meet the
current and future long term care needs for people
of all ages residing in Monroe County.
The 2010 census indicates that Monroe County’s
population of adults age 60 and over has increased
from 123,011 to 145,084 within the past ten
years. This increase heightens the importance for
MCOFA to continue to provide a wide array of
high quality community services in the most cost
efficient manner as possible.
MCOFA funded programs assist people to remain
independent and safe in their own homes, and keep
our community rich in spirit in helping people to
excel at aging well.

Sibley’s in the fall of 1988 with 1,600 members and 22 class offerings. Today, we have 9,372 members and last trimester we offered 163

volunteers including instructors and office workers.
Please call me (730-8802) or see me if you think you might be

ARTS & HUMANITIES
The May Pole
100
Vivian Elliott, retired classics assistant professor
The setting up of the May Pole, and the ensuing dance around it, is
an age-old rite of Spring and a charming image such as that provided
us by Maurice Prendergast’s May Day Central Park. However, it is
also one of the richest and most significant symbols in the whole of the
world. You will begin by “knocking on wood” and thereafter consider
the relationship of the May Pole to many other things such as: Jacob’s
ladder, a church steeple, the labyrinth, the dance of the Dervish, practices of meditation, the physician’s rod, the whorl of hair on the back of
your head, and even VanGogh’s Starry Starry Night.

Ashes, the real goal will be for each student to start writing. As we all

May of 2011. His previous position was as the chief restaurant critic
for the New York Times from 2004-2009. Frank’s writing topics have
included the Catholic Church and the abuse scandal, his grandparent’s
immigration to the USA, football and violence, Bin Laden and Hollywood, grandstanding by Harry Reid or The Divine Miss M (also
known as Michelle Balkman), homosexuality, the changing family and
how it might affect Andrew Cuomo, and how to choose a college. He

Alfred Hitchcock Part VI: 1960s and 1970s218
David M Ferrell, PhD, Professor and Chairperson Emeritus,
Nazareth College
These sessions will be devoted to viewing and discussing five Hitchcock thrillers with which he concluded his illustrious career. Two of
the films - Psycho (1960), starring Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins,
and Frenzy (1972), starring Jon Finch and Barry Foster, continue to explore psychotic behavior which began with Bruno Anthony in Strangers on a Train in 1954. The Birds (1963), starring Tippi Hedren and
Rod Taylor, is a story filled with symbolism about the fragility of human relationships set against a background of recurring bird attacks.
Marnie (1964), starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery, centers on
a young woman’s compulsions and buried fears created from deepseated childhood memories. And, in Torn Curtain (1966), starring
Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, Hitchcock returns to one of his favorite topics – a chase that results after defecting from one’s homeland
to steal scientific formulas from behind the Iron Curtain. Hitchcock
would leave behind over fifty motion pictures that remain compelling,
popular, and worthy of study. He was a true genius despite the fact that
he never received an Academy Award.

Writing Poetry
308
Frank Judge
This is a course for those who have written poetry at any level and
for those who want to learn how. The class can be taken as often as a
member wants since it’s a workshop rather than a presentation of set
content. Nor is this a course on writing strict traditional forms like
the sonnet, sestina, etc. The class does consider some short forms like
haiku, tanka, and cinquain; but students aren’t required to write in meter and rhyme -- instead, they’re encouraged to use whatever is comfortable for them. Class and home exercises are geared to tapping into
our creativity, using our experiences and imagination to develop and
sharpen the habit of writing. There are two suggested texts which can
be purchased used online at a fraction of their retail price.

Not Just Another Pretty Vase –
the Story of American Art Pottery
510
Donald Hall, retired Director, Strasenburgh Planetarium
American art pottery objects are made of clay, in a factory, and designed to be more beautiful, or at least AS beautiful, as they are useful. Ohio was a major center for the work, but the work was produced
throughout America. It all began in 1880 when three things came together: the ability to work with clay, the hobby of china painting, and
the inspiration which came from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. This
pottery was produced into the Depression era, and perhaps beyond.
Major makers included Rookwood, Roseville and Weller plus dozens
more. Don will have pottery examples to show as well as well over 200
images. Class members are invited to bring in suspected examples of
American art pottery for use during the class.

EXERCISE
T’ai Chi - Introduction
101
Diane Macchiavelli, LAc
T’ai Chi, a 2,000-year-old form of exercise, is gentle and self-paced.
The slow and continuous movements lengthen and strengthen the muscles while relaxing the mind. It is used as therapy for chronic pain, high
blood pressure, depression, and limited mobility. Described as swimming through air, it is a perfect exercise for all ages and abilities. It can
be practiced while seated, making T’ai Chi accessible to those with
compromised physical conditions such as MS, arthritis, etc. A recent
study by the National Institutes of Health found that practicing T’ai
Chi can help older adults keep dormant the virus that causes shingles.

There is no greater treasure than a quiet mind. It enables us to be fully
present with others and more aware of the world around us. It is freedom from thoughts and feelings we cannot control or escape. Many
people are never free from intrusive or automatic thoughts and feelings
and never experience a quiet mind. The mind goes from one thing to

From an Office Building with a
High-Powered Rifle

Donald Sweet, PhD
Don Adams, a former FBI agent, was given an assignment to investigate Joseph Milteer, a man who made threats to assassinate President
Kennedy. An FBI informant reported that Milteer claimed Kennedy
could (and would) be killed from an office building with a high-powered rifle. Two weeks later the president was dead. Since that time,
Adams has compiled evidence, some from his experience in the Dallas
FBI office, to produce a compelling investigation that sheds new light
on the murder of our 35th president. In this course, you will examine
and discuss the JFK assassination from the fresh perspective of FBI
agent Adams. A copy of his book is included in the cost of the course.

The Erie Canal, opened through Rochester in 1823, was carried over

moved it south of downtown. In the 1920’s the old canal bed was converted to a subway and Broad Street built over it. These developments

Civilian Conservation Corps in

519
Paul Zielinski
This presentation will discuss the impact that men enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) had on Letchworth State Park during the Depression of the 1930’s. It includes interviews with four local
men who volunteered for six month stints in the CCC to get an idea
of what led them to enlist, what the actual day-to-day experience was
like, and what impact it had on their lives. To properly understand the
importance of this program, we will discuss the enormous dislocations
created by ‘The Great Depression’ and the tremendous benefits the
CCC brought to program participants, their families, and the millions
that visit and make use of our beautiful parks. The presentation will
utilize slides and videos to depict the historical environment which
resulted in the adoption of the CCC and the creation and building of
much of the infrastructure which still enhances Letchworth State Park.

Lost Boys of Sudan - An Update
520
Sebastian Maroundit
In 1988, when Sebastian was eight years old, militants in Sudan attacked his village and others killing randomly and burning everything.
Many young boys who were out herding animals were able to escape.
Sebastian was one such boy. He walked for three months evading
thirst, starvation, wild animals, insects, and disease to reach Ethiopia,
remaining there for four years. When internal war in Ethiopia forced
them out, the boys walked back to Sudan and later on to Kenya in
1992. Of about 20,000 boys who escaped, only 4,000 to 6,000 survived
the dreadful journey. Sebastian arrived in Rochester in 2001. He returns to visit his village in Sudan regularly to help build schools there.

and walk the path of the earlier race track that occupied the land, then
learn about James A. Vick’s seed garden that in just a few years outgrew this property and moved to a larger space while Victorian houses
were being built where fields of flowers and vegetables had been.

J.S. Bach - His Life and Works
217
Samantha Inman, doctoral candidate, Eastman School of Music
Perhaps the most concise characterization of Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685-1750) comes from the Oxford Companion, which hails this composer, organist, and teacher as “the supreme musical genius of the late
Baroque period.” This devout Lutheran brought Baroque idioms to
their zenith, and his compositions constitute some of the most brilliant contrapuntal writing in all of music history. The course surveys
the major events of Bach’s life, from his birth in Eisenach through his
final years as cantor of the St. Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Much of class
time will be devoted to listening and discussion of representative musical works, exploring genres including the preludes and fugues for
keyboard, the instrumental partitas and concertos, the sacred cantatas,
and the large-scale works for voices and orchestra, most notably the
great Mass in B minor.

What the Heck is a Symphony?
219
John R. Ertle, retired teacher, Rochester City School District,
former announcer for WXXI
‘Jack is always a pleasure!’, say his students. Most young people think
a symphony is ‘a piece of music with lots of instruments.’ They’re correct, of course; but they’re surprised to find out later that the ‘symphony’ has an exciting history, starting with the ‘Father of the Symphony’,
Franz Joseph Haydn. Haydn is credited with giving the symphony a
STRUCTURE, on which later composers base their symphonies. In
the history of the symphony, there is a mystique and a strange dealing
with the number ‘9’. Jack Ertle will take you on a tuneful ride through
the 2 1/2 centuries of the symphony, and you will hear some of the
most beautiful music ever written.

Visit to a Magical Garden
515
Gerald Kral
Gerald Kral has spent 21 years creating a magical garden at his home.
He added to his yard by taking over an adjacent backyard, thus creating an acre of over 300 different conifers, shrubs, other trees, and
flowers. Wandering through his garden, you will be delighted by
whimsical sculptures and many surprises such as sitting nooks and
the secret garden. While specializing in conifers, Mr. Kral has created
an esthetically lovely place to visit with hundreds of other beautiful
plants. Meet at 900 N. Winton Rd.

Join the Legacy Circle
and help OASIS live on!
OASIS is about making the most of life. Having an
up-to-date will or estate plan is a natural extension,
allowing you to ensure your legacy.
Join the OASIS Legacy Circle today.
By doing so, you can make a gift to benefit OASIS
for years to come by providing a dollar amount or
percentage of your estate to the organization in your
will.
Such a designation can reduce your real estate taxes,
and in many cases, you can include a charitable
organization like OASIS in your will, without having
to completely re-write it.
Our thanks for considering the ultimate gift.

OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Continues in Greece
Central School District
Be a tutor, mentor and friend to a child who needs
your help! The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring
Program matches volunteers with students in K-4 who
need help developing reading and language skills.
This fall in Greece Central, volunteers will be paired
with students in K-2. Volunteers work one-on-one
with the child during the school day as a tutor, mentor
and friend.
No experience is needed! A 12-hour training
session is provided. Spend 30-60 minutes a week
with your child in the school during the school year.
At monthly meetings you will share ideas with other
tutors and professionals.
For information, please contact Diane Boni,
Greece Central School District, at (585) 966-2477 or
[email protected].
