The 2006 Population By-census was conducted in July to August 2006. The aim of conducting population censuses / by-censuses is to obtain up-to-date benchmark information on the socio-economic characteristics of the population and on its geographical distribution. They provide benchmark data for studying the direction and trend of population changes. The data are key inputs for making projections concerning population, households, labour force and employment. The information collected is vital to government planning and policy formulation. Data on small areas form the basis of district development and service planning programmes of the government, while comprehensive information on population sub-groups, such as the elderly and single parent families, facilitates the planning of welfare policy and social service programmes.
