AirMUN'16 Agenda Item
The Horn of Africa is a region of eastern Africa where continually in crisis. It is the
easternmost extension of African land and home to the countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
2
and Somalia, whose cultures have been linked with their long history. There are also broader
definitions, the most common of which include all the countries mentioned above, as well as
parts or all of Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda. Throughout the history it was a battle
ground for proxy wars and now it is the playground of illegal organizations. In the period
following the opening of the Suez canal in 1869, when European powers scrambled for territory
in Africa and tried to establish coaling stations for their ships. Due to countries Red Sea
coastline and mineral resources, was the main cause of crisis. Other crisis like regional drought
in addition to successive bad rains and rising inflation ramped up a chronic livelihoods crisis into
a tipping point of potential disaster by putting extreme pressure on food prices, livestock
survival, and water and food availability. Armed conflict across the region compounded chronic
ecological and economic vulnerability, which escalated the crisis and limited people’s survival
and recovery choices. The Horn of Africa crisis has already affected 13 million people. The
countries included in the conflict didn’t negotiate in the past and does not seem to sit a round
table currently. The AirMUN gives you the scarce opportunity to initiate your creativity and
debating skills into solving one of the most difficult problems in the world. Turkish Air Force
Academy is proud to host the unforgettable debate that will take place in its beautiful campus
which frames the delicacy of sea and the silvery shining stars over Istanbul.
TIPS FOR PREPARATION
How to MUN and Prepare
First of all, Model United Nations (MUN) conferences require you to be knowledgeable
about the agenda item. You might be a newcomer to the MUN world but don't worry! We will
take care of this together. Before all else, your knowledge about the topic will be the key to
success. Also when you boost this knowledge with research about the topic, and the country's
interests you are to represent you will be a good delegate already. Don't worry about the rules
of procedures too much. When committee directors asked will explain the rules of procedures.
Also you will be given workshops about how to MUN just before the AIRMUN sessions start.
General AIRMUN Preparation
Attendees should familiarize themselves with our study guide and rules of procedures
which are to be released on our website one week before the event. Our workshops which will
3
be given the very first day will help you understand the basics of MUN world, how the process
goes on etc. But with a beforehand preparation you will enjoy MUN more.
Thorough preparation is essential to making AIRMUN an excellent educational
experience. Pre-conference research makes committee more fun and rewarding, as delegates
can then immerse themselves in their roles as high-ranking diplomats.
Topic Preparation
The study guide for AIRMUN will provide you a background and overview of the topic
area to be discussed. The study guide should be your first stop for committee information as
the Director of the committee has compiled, organized, and presented all information that he or
she expects the committee to discuss. Do not forget to study "further reading" part in our study
guide.
Country Preparation
Delegates should learn as much as possible about the country they will be representing
– both in general and especially in relation to the topics they will be discussing. While our study
guides include an analysis of bloc positions on topic areas, students should also learn about the
specific positions of their respective nations. Because for 3 days you will walk in the shoes of
another country's representative and you will have to protect the interests of this country.
