UPDATES AND HEADS UP FROM SPANISH @ SOUTH LOOP Communication is essential. It is what brings us together. I strive to guide our students to harness this skill and expand their horizons as global citizens with constant knowledge of language and culture. ¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome back South Loop families! I
am thrilled to be back as your Spanish
teacher this 2013-14 school year! I
have lots planned for our K-6th grade
students. Below you will find important
information regarding your student’s
second (or third) language learning, the
mechanics of the Spanish classroom, as
well as some supplementary resources
for language practice at home!
The 3rd - 6th grades have received a
syllabus that we have gone over in
class. I request that a parent signature
be returned to verify that parents and
students have gone over the syllabus
and that there is understanding of what
is expected from our Spanish students.
Please keep the syllabus in a safe place
to refer to. There is also a copy on my
website.
K-2nd students have received a parent
letter about our Spanish expectations
and what to expect in the curriculum
this quarter. In the next few weeks,
students will start “teaching” family
members 5 vocabulary words a week
that were learned in Spanish class. This
homework is imperative for language
retention and allows you to stay in the
“Loop” with our Spanish curriculum. I
will be sending home vocabulary lists
that apply to each unit for supplemental
support.
5th and 6th students will be interacting
with the online curriculum “Voces”—
an exploratory Spanish resource with a
focus on Mexico and culture. Students
will be receiving logins to access this
site at home to do homework and play
games. Parents should have received a
permission slip regarding online use for
homework. If students do not have
internet access at home, Mr. Berlanga
will be offering technology hours for
students to use the computers.
¡Clases de Español!
Per request of our South Loop community, I will be offering Spanish classes after school.
Students will engage in 45 minute immersion scenarios where they will play games,
watch short films, read books, and learn to communicate without English. These classes
are ideal for elementary students that have had more intermediate to advanced practice as
well as middle school students that are preparing for mandatory high school language
courses. I tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of every student and will pair them with
speaking partners based on their level and interests.

Requirements &
Rewards in the
Spanish class…
Some mechanics for successful language learning Supplementary
Resources
Second language acquisition
depends greatly on the length of
time one is exposed to the target
language. I encourage all parents
to use the supplementary
resources I have provided below
and to check my website for new
articles and more language
learning resources.

in Spanish
This year I strive to help
students achieve an
organized Spanish routine
with a fun and safe
classroom environment.
This is especially crucial
since we will be doing lots of
speaking and small group
work.
In order to maintain our
organization, every Spanish
student needs a 2-pocket
folder to keep worksheets in.
All 2nd-6th graders need a
notebook for note taking and
vocabulary practice. These
items are crucial to a
successful Spanish year!
There are extra materials in
the Virtual backpack that
would improve our Spanish
classroom as well, but please
do not buy extra if the
homeroom teacher has
requested those materials.
With the proper materials in
hand, students have already
begun to create Spanish
classroom expectation
posters, (mission
statements). These
expectations will require a
parent signature so that we
are communicating on how
each unique class will
function. I am pleased to
inform that students have
been using the “Leader in
Me” language and applying
it to our expectation posters
already!
In addition to our posters,
students will be working
together to achieve these
expectations on a weekly
basis to earn a “Fiesta Day”.
Fiesta days will be Spanish
celebration days that may
include Spanish games,
songs, and dances. One
fiesta day will take place in
grades 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, and 5th6th per quarter as a reward
for maintaining our fun and
safe classroom environment.
What classes will synergize
the most?! We shall see!
SPANISH
EXPECTATIONS
AND
CONDUCT
Students are expected to try
their best in all Spanish
activities. New languages
can sound funny when we are
learning so it is important to
maintain respect for each
other as we practice together.
Because participation and
respectful classroom conduct
are essential for developing
second language acquisition,
the student’s grade will reflect
this behavior by 10%. For a
breakdown of the grading
categories, please visit the
