Fitzgerald is showing readers the variety of
people that take advantage of Gatsby and
spread rumors about him (AUTHOR'S
PURPOSE).
Gatsby makes Nick go to lunch with him. Gatsby acts nervous.
Gatsby convinces Nick that he served in the war and did go to Oxford. He has proof.
