Green landscaping culture for old trees, health diagnosis and conservation
The Department of Cultural Affairs in Taipei, which is determined to preserve
cultural assets at all costs, held an event for green landscaping, culture, health
diagnosis and conservation for old trees on 6 October. It was a long day with a
series of activities. It is expected to bring about a new monument for the task of
protecting trees in Taipei.
Activities:morning session:Checking old trees on Beitou Ximin Road,
Liquidambar Boulevard and the former Japanese army garrison hospital. Afternoon
session: First, urban green landscaping, and the relationship between residential
and green areas. Second, conservation for valuable old trees. The speaker, Mr.
Yamashita, who is the vice-president of the Street Trees Diagnosis Association in
Japan, sets Japan as the model to explain the methods of preserving old trees and
their importance.
1
Explaining the conditions of trees on
Liquidambar Boulevard.
Mr. Yamashita, who is the vicepresident of Street Trees. Diagnosis
Association in Japan, reported on the
status for the local residents.
Liquidambar Boulevard conditions: since this road was paved during the
Japanese.occupation, the sweet.gum that is about 80 years old is in a space that is
too small. The roots have grown into ditches and have.destroyed the surface. It is
proposed to make improvements for the habitat and dig a solid tree hole.
Otherwise, increasingly more of them will die in the future.
2
The CCA expects to begin renovating the former Japanese army garrison
hospital (reported to be a cultural monument) next year. Two days before
this time, about a 180 year old banyan tree fell due to brown root disease
that invaded the roots. It was a good example of this type of condition.
Fortunately, the direction of the tree’s fall did not affect the monument, and
there was not any injury to people. It was a stroke of good luck in a stretch
of bad.
A group of people who love trees worry about trees falling, and also worry
the monument will be damaged.
3
The vice-president explained the condition of rotted roots. Therefore, the
trees need a health check and maintenance. After all, they are too familiar to
us.
Vice-president Yamashita makes a health check on adjacent trees and finds
out it has 20cm deep rot non-stop mark. He hopes to reduce the weight of
the above or make a bracket to protect the monument and prevent injuries
to people.
4
The vice-president makes a health check for old tree no. 1008 at the Hot
Springs Museum to find that there is a hollow rot on the top and will cause
the danger of falling. The protection of tree habitat must be extended.
Otherwise, if the rot becomes greater than the growth, then this will cause
the danger of falling.

First, urban green landscaping, involving the relationship between residents
and green spaces.
Second, conservation for valuable old trees.
Old tree - the most important defined aspect of the landscape.
Introducing the landscape method in Japan. It is a good example for people
to follow and understand how Japanese build a beautiful environment.
The basic idea of the tree preservation and protecting trees. (Understanding
how Japanese manage tree planting, and create a cherry blossom season that
makes their country worth visiting, while expending the lowest cost of
investment that green landscaping can offer.)

Introducing the examples of precious old trees preservation (their
protection).
Because of financial problems, we could not prepare a good lecture
location for the visiting VIPs. We deeply apologize for all of the VIPs
who were present. However, there is not any five-star quality venue,
but the combination of the museum and the old trees offer different
examples of elegance.

Telling the stories about old trees in the elegance of city monuments.
Autumn was vivid.
It was a beautiful afternoon.
The experiences that we gained:
Conservation of old trees requires assistance from the government, experts
and residents. Not any of them can be dispensed with.
Old houses usually have trees nearby. Therefore, old houses are more
vulnerable to damage, and the habitat that old trees need become increasingly
bigger. The habitat is trampled down by people and causes health problems
for the old trees. If we do not remedy and maintain the habitat, the trees might
also endanger the old houses.
The renovation of old houses also requires paying attention to the protection
of the health of the trees around them.
The trees will experience birth, illness, and old age and death. They need to
undergo a health examination.
Taichung TanyaShen Bike Path(A private attraction that only belongs to
Taichung residents):
【Old trees、fields and leisure time】The first destination for visitors who
come to Taichung is Dongfeng and the Houfeng bicycle path, which are fairly
well-known in Taiwan. The two bicycle paths have scenery will let you
indulge in pleasures without end. However, there are too many visitors, and
the small traffic lane will have problems, such as with traffic. The Tanya Shen
bicycle path, which fewer people know about, has become a synonym for
healthy relaxation.
7
Along the path, Taiwanese Flame Goldrain trees are blooming
and yielding fruit.
The green space covers about 13% of a very lovely lane.

be 70 years old.

The Mile-a-minute Weed of Central Cross-Island
Highway have invaded.
I went to Hualien Tzuchi for a tree health checkup during mid-autumn
festival. Since continual holidays will cause traffic congeston, I did not dare
go further north or south on the return trip. Therefore, I chose to drive back to
Taichung from the Central Cross-Island Highway, which I had not driven on
for over 10 years. The scenery on the way is radiant and enchanting. People
are unable to experience this majestic and spectacular scenery. However,
before and close to Dayuling, there are very many mile-a-minute weeds,
which are known as a tree cancer.
The trees are surrounded by them. Although they have not reached the extent
of covering all of the forest yet, they are slowly spreading, and we are very
anxious the speed of their growth. If the relevant authorities do not to think
about it seriously and prevent it without delay, someday the whole mountain
forest will be invaded, and this will be regretful.
11
The file of mile-a-minute weed: they originated in Central and South America. Due
to its rapid growth and flowering characteristics, they were introduced by
business people who admire the beauty of its flowers. However, in an environment
with no natural enemies, it grows a great deal at 1000 meters above the Central
Mountain Range .
Its characteristics: it is a parasitic vine that grows every year. They often cling to
trees for photosynthesis. They also grow very fast and often only one can be
wrapped completely around a whole tree. Therefore, this causes the trees to be
unable to carry out photosynthesis and then cause its death. It blooms in winter, and
forms spores from about September to October. During the next spring, it
re-sprouts and grows quickly. This so-called tree cancer will grow several times each
year.
The current approach : pull them up manually. However, it must be done before
August. There will be more serious proliferation when they are pulled up manually
after blossoming.
