She had one of the brightest smiles I can ever remember. As Principal of NDA she was a gifted leader and was truly dedicated to all of her young students. I will always remember her.” report is dedicated to sr. susan o’Halloran, Cnd, who died december 25, 2008. sr. o’Halloran was principal of notre dame academy elementary school Lori J. (Mazzola) Zanelli from 1968 to 1982. While 14 years have passed since she served at nda, she is remembered fondly for her kindness, her graciousness and her leadership. 1967 was the first year that the elementary school had a separate principal, and in 1968 sr. o’Halloran began her reign. it was a time of remarkable growth and change. Just two of the many interesting initiatives that marked her twenty-four years as principal were the annual festivity in honor of st. Francis which included a menagerie of pets from parakeets to ponies for the blessing of the animals, and the strong support for the “Working with Sr. Susan was the best experience of my working life. She was a joy to be with. Her door was open to anyone who needed her. What I remember most was the wonderful relationship she developed with the parents. Working at Notre Dame became part of my life, and my husband’s life as well.” Rosina Pallada Elementary Secretary. 1969-1985 “I remember Sr. Susan’s warm smile and infectious laugh. One memory which I think illustrates exactly who she was as an educator and leader was her distribution of report cards. Sr. Susan would come to our classroom and of course we were a little nervous when our names were called in front of the whole class. But somehow Sr. Susan managed to calm our anxieties with just a smile and a nice word that was always personalized for each student. Everyone had great respect for her. You knew you could talk to her because she was so kind and caring. Fathers guild which eventually started the now famous Family day. sr. o’Halloran lived fully the belief stated by Tracy O’Donnell Murray saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, “teaching is the work most suited to draw down the graces of god if it is done with purity of intention, without distinction between the poor and rich, between relatives and friends and strangers, between the pretty and the plain, the gentle and the grumblers...”, and she inspired her teachers to believe the same. Mission Statement In the tradition of the Congregation of Notre Dame, the mission of Notre Dame Academy is to advance, embody and excel at liberating education, an education which leads each girl and young woman to become an agent of her own transformation and of the transformation of society. Belief Statement As a Catholic community founded on the transforming mission of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys and dedicated exclusively to the education of girls: We believe that each girl is a true original filled with a divine light which only she can radiate to the world. We believe each girl is on a spiritual journey maturing from a child of God to a young woman of the Gospel. We believe in academic excellence which is innovative and cutting-edge moving continuously from good to great. We believe in cultivating leadership in each girl which is defined by integrity, imagination and the courage to stand up for her own rights and needs and the rights and needs of others. We believe in being a welcoming, inclusive community which embraces all members of our local, national and global families with justice and compassion. 1 Y M E D A C A E NOTRE DAM Chair nrahan, CND M. But so much has changed. is fact is a vibrant indicator of the evolving life of nda; a life that you parents, alumnae, friends and supporters have made possible. i came to notre dame in september 2008, just as the school year was beginning. e early Childhood Center was completed and four classes of beautiful little girls came squealing into their gorgeous, practical, comfortable new building. e 8th grade classrooms had been totally refurbished and so they too were truly excited about their new place. ere was a lovely walkway around a huge hole in the ground on the High school side of the campus. e new Chapel/dining Hall/arts and Humanities building was underway. all of the grades were full and the campus was bustling with activity. i wondered how all of this could be happening. in october a new Mission advancement team came on board, Jackie, Michael and Pauline. We have been busy discovering what keeps this big enterprise called notre dame academy afloat. We learned that there were two major streams of funding, e Capital Campaign and the annual Fund. e Capital Campaign money is used specifically for the new construction, endowments or restricted programs. e annual Fund money is exclusively for the yearly operation of the academy. at money bridges the gap between actual expenses and money raised by tuition and fees. For some reason, the report was not done last year, so we had to do a great deal of research to put together a comprehensive report. each of us was new to the situation and so this took us a little longer than we had hoped. In the tradition of the Congregation of Notre Dame, the mission of Notre Dame Academy is to advance, embody, and excel at liberating education, an education which leads each girl and young woman to become an agent of her own transformation and the transformation of society. Without the generous support of the families, alumnae and friends of nda, even our very dedicated staff could not make that mission statement a reality. so as i begin my term as President i want to first express my gratitude to a staff that challenges our girls and young women to excellence every day. and then, to all of you who have contributed financially to our continued pursuit of a liberating education for so many, i extend a profoundly heartfelt tHanK YoU. i am committed to maintaining/creating a climate of excellence that will assure you that you have invested wisely. i hope to broaden our global awareness by focusing the attention of the entire school community on ecology at the Heart of the Christian Message. and above all i look forward to restoring our chapel as literally the center of the campus and figuratively as the center of all our endeavors. in the spirit of st. Marguerite Bourgeoys, i thank you. Prayerfully, sr. In the spirit of Marguerite Bourgeoys, foundress of the founding sisters of NDA, and of Our Lady, we strive to live with others in an open spirit of “visitation”: receptive to God moving within us, and generously sharing the joy of God’s gis with each other. It is in this spirit that we discover God, welcome God in those around us, and celebrate in Joy the power of God living among us! Mary said in scripture, “My soul proclaims Your greatness, O my God, and my spirit rejoices in You.” Like Mary with the apostles, we nurture community, and welcome the movement of the Spirit to help us to “transform society”.
