Recital Information
Mommy & Me
The Sunset Dance Academy holds two recitals each
year -- a Spring Recital and a Holiday Recital. Costume
fees for recitals are included in dance class fees. Recitals
are held in the Geneva High School Auditorium.
Ages 18-29 months
In this class, tots will be guided through dance and
creative movement/play with a parental figure. Tots
need dance attire, adults need comfortable clothing.
Tiny Toes / Pre-Ballet
Ages 2.5-6
Tiny Toes and Pre-Ballet classes introduce simple ballet
movements and terminology through fun music,
choreography, and props.
Dance Classes
Dance Companies
Ballet / Tap / Jazz
Ages 3+
Learn the fundamentals of classical ballet, tap, or jazz.
Classes will focus on technique, proper body alignment,
coordination, and rhythm. Students will be introduced
to barre, center work combinations, and routines
Lyrical / Hip Hop
Ages 5+
Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz, and allows the dance
to express emotion through the movements. Hip Hop
emulates the dance steps seen in music videos and on
dance teams.
Dance Companies
Performance Company
Ages 4.5 +
Performance Company members receive an
introduction to our dance company experience by
participating in recitals and performances, without the
intensity of competitions. Auditions are not required
for Performance Company.
Sunset Dance Company
Ages 5+
Company members study and perform at a higher level,
taking three or more classes a week. Participants will
learn in a supportive environment, and be encouraged
to bring forth their best effort. Company members will
compete at two competitions each season, and have
the opportunity to perform at a variety of local events.
Dance Company auditions are held each August. A fullyear commitment is required.
Dance Attire
Required dance attire for all classes includes:
• Leotard with pink or tan tights.
• Ballet skirts may be worn for ballet.
• Black tights or tight jazz pants may be worn for jazz.
• Ballet shoes with laces cut off for ballet, jazz shoes
for jazz & hip hop, tap shoes for tap. Please label
shoes with the dancer’s name!
• Hair pulled away from face (bun or braid).
• No baggy clothes, street clothes, or gym shoes.

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS
Katie Behrens is the Geneva
Park District’s Sunset Dance Academy
coordinator. She has taught at the
Geneva Park District since 2001, and
has also been a dance instructor at the
St. Charles School of Dance, the Sugar
Grove Park District, and West Chicago
Park District.
Katie has been dancing her entire life. She began her official
training at Dancescape in St. Charles when she was nine years
old, and has studied ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, pointe, tap, and
hip hop. Her parents founded The St. Charles School of Dance in
1991. Katie graduated from the Chicago Academy for the Arts
with a Dance emphasis diploma, and studied at Northern Illinois
University. She holds a Group Fitness Certification from the
Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), and is currently
studying to become a certified Health Coach.
Katie teaches Mommy and Me, Tiny Toes, Combo, Ballet, Jazz, Hip
Hop, Lyrical, and Company classes. She enjoys helping her students
discover the joy of dance while watching them grow into the art.
Katie grew up in St. Charles, and lives in Sugar Grove with her
husband Scott.
Jenifer Camery started dancing
at the age of three, and has continued
studying ballet, contemporary, jazz,
and hip hop throughout her life. Jenifer
was a member of the Batavia High
School Dance Team, learned flamenco
dancing while studying abroad in Spain,
and earned a dance and performing
arts endorsement at Northern Illinois
University while earning an elementary education degree with a
minor in Spanish.
Jenifer has taught dance at a variety of studios, and coached the
Dynamic Dance Allstars teams to Nationals several years in a row.
She has been an instructor at the Geneva Park District since 2014
and teaches Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Tumbling, Cheer and Poms, and the
Angels competitive team. For Jenifer, dance is a way to escape.
She loves the way that dancing makes her feel, and how it allows
her to take a break from life and just live in the moment. Jenifer is
currently a second grade teacher in Batavia. Besides teaching and
dancing, she loves to travel to new places, meet the people, try their
food, and learn their dances and how they celebrate their culture.
Haleigh Hutchinson has
been dancing since she was three years
old. She has trained at The Dance
Center at Columbia College of Chicago,
Pineapple Studios in London, and North
Central College. Haleigh has a BA in
Musical Theatre Performance with a
Minor in Dance from North Central
College. In 2009 Haleigh was accepted
to the Rockettes Summer Dance Intensive in NYC. Haleigh has
performed in a variety of professional musical theatre venues in the
Chicagoland area as well in Connecticut.
Haleigh is trained in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, musical theatre
dance, and hip-hop. Haleigh has been with the Sunset Dance
Academy since August of 2015. Haleigh enjoys teaching not only
the importance of good dance technique, but also the positive life
lessons learned through a dance education.
Ryann Marszalek began
dancing at the age of four while living
in England, and danced her way around
the United States while growing up
as part of an Air Force family. She has
studied ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, tap,
and pointe; and holds a Bachelor of Arts
in Theatre, specializing in Dance from
Michigan State University.
Ryann has been an instructor with the Geneva Park District for
almost 8 years, and teaches Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tiny Toes,
Lyrical, Tumbling, and Gymnastics. She previously taught at
DanceQuest in Plainfield. She loves watching the kids’ excitement
when they reach their goals, or discover something new about
dancing that they love. Ryann lives in Batavia with her husband,
Peter, and their two dogs, Duke and Prince. In her spare time, she
enjoys reading, painting, and gardening.
Debbie Von Oehsen has
had a lifelong love of dance. She began
to study dance at the age of three, and
continued enrolling in every dance class
she could. In college, Debbie studied
ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip hop and
contemporary dance at Northern Illinois
University and was a member of the NIU
Silverettes Dance Line.
Currently, Debbie teaches first grade at Grace McWayne Elementary
School in Batavia, IL. She holds a Master’s Degree in Reading
Instruction from Aurora University and a degree in Elementary
Education with an endorsement in Dance Performance from
Northern Illinois University. Debbie was formerly the Head Junior
Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach for the Batavia High
School Dance Team, the founder and artistic director of Dynamic
Dance Allstars Dance Company, and has taught at many dance
studios around the Fox Valley area. She presently is keeping her
love of dance alive as a dance instructor at the Geneva Park District,
and as a coach of the Geneva Angels Competitive Cheerleading and
Pom Team.

Spring 2017 Sunset Dance Academy Recital Information
Dress Rehearsal, Pictures & Recital
Dates may be May 19 or 20, more details will be available in April.
Participants will be measured for costumes during the first class.
Parents will be required to attend first class for a brief meeting. Costume is included in fee.

Information regarding what recital your dancer(s) will be in will be out after Spring Break, in April
Every effort is made to get siblings in different classes in the same show, however it is not guaranteed. Please note: dancers may be in different shows that may be scheduled on different days.
Purchase dance tights and shoes through us!
Please order tights by April 15, code 1210331-01, and pick up at the Sunset Community Center front desk. Please order recital flowers to give your dancer by April 15.
Tan Tights: $8 pair - 1210331-01 / Tan Jazz Shoes: Adult $36 - 1210337-05 or Child $33 - 1210337-03 / Pink Ballet Shoes: Adult $21 - 1210337-01 or Child $20 - 1210337-02
It is recommended to order dance shoes by December 28 to pick up at the first class.
