the Toolkit

e’re thrilled you’re joining us to celebrate our 5th birthday on Monday, October 5th.
This special Wonder Celebration Toolkit includes great ways for you to celebrate
Wonder in your classroom and at home. You’ll find ideas for hosting your own
Wonder Celebration, planning tips, material lists, and resources to help you keep the
wonder going for years to come!
The magic of using curiosity and wonder to engage youth and families is that wonder can
happen anywhere, anytime. Wondering doesn’t cost anything, and it provides an interesting
way to spark dialogue and learning together. Wondering sets the stage for imaginative
conversations and deeper exploration. This Toolkit will help you get your celebration
organized so you can make the most of your Wonder Celebration with students and
families. Thanks for using Wonderopolis® to unlock teaching and learning potential!
Created by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), Wonderopolis is an interactive,
award-winning learning platform that ignites the natural curiosity in all of us to deliberately
and simultaneously address skills-based learning and the “Four Cs” of 21st century skills
(critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity)—both in and out of the
classroom. High-interest content hooks learners and drives improvement of background
knowledge, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills. Lauded by educators and
students across K-12, Wonderopolis is offered completely free of charge.

rint and display the We Celebrate Wonder poster in your classroom and throughout your school.

• S

• I nvolve students and families in more than just the live birthday celebration event.
Spend time prior to and after the event exploring Wonderopolis.org and sharing favorite Wonders.

October 5 Celebration Ideas
• S
ign our virtual birthday
card by showing us how you
#CelebrateWonder. Post about your
Wonder Celebration on social media
using the #CelebrateWonder hashtag.
All posts will be included in our special birthday card gallery.
• F
ollow the Big Picture clues on our birthday page throughout the day. Can you guess
what they mean?
• P
ost copies of the We Celebrate Wonder poster to let others know about your
Wonder activities.
Wonder Activities
• W
onder Wall: Use the “I Wonder…” forms and have people write or draw questions they
wonder about. Post the forms on a wall or bulletin board and make your own Wonder
Wall. The Wonder Wall can be used in a classroom or for the whole school. It’s fun to
also let people post responses on the Wonder Wall—use one color for questions and
another color for answers. This is a great way to encourage inquiry throughout the day
and engage an entire classroom or school in sharing and learning together. We would
love to see pictures of your Wonder Wall! Simply post them to social media using the
hashtag #CelebrateWonder.
• W
onder Song: One of the most famous ways to celebrate your birthday is through
song. Check out our birthday page to see kindergarteners sing a Wonder song that was
written by Wonder Lead Ambassador Jon Fines. Let your creativity shine and write your
very own song (or poem) about Wonderopolis and the joys of Wondering! Use the “Chart
Topper” form included in this Toolkit to compose your lyrics, then share them on social
media using the #CelebrateWonder hashtag. Even better, post a video of your class
singing its very own Wonder song!
ompose Your Own Wonders: Students can use the Wonder of the Day® template
• C
included in the toolkit to guide them as they create their own Wonders. Choose
different sections for the students to complete, or have them create an entire
Wonder. Older students can do this individually, but it’s also a great project for groups,
classrooms, and even entire schools. Working with Wonderopolis, you can even have
your student-written Wonders published as Wonders of the Day by submitting your idea
to the Wonder Bank on Wonderopolis.org. We encourage you to take photos and share
your Wonders using the hashtag #CelebrateWonder.
• B
ig Picture Activity: Throughout the day on October 5th, images will be posted on
Wonderopolis.org and Wonderopolis social media (Facebook and Twitter). The first
image will be posted at 9:05 a.m. EST and new clues will be posted every hour on
the 0:05. Can you figure out what the clues mean? We encourage you to share you
predictions, thoughts, and celebration activities throughout the day on Twitter with
@Wonderopolis.
• W
onder Stations: Designate a specific area or room for Wondering and interest-driven
exploration. A Wonder Station can be large or small and as detailed as you want to
make it. Wonder Stations can host a variety of activities featuring your favorite Wonders.
• M
aker Activities: Maker activities are centered on content-based learning and
exploration, focusing on literacy and STEM-based topics. These easy-to-implement
activities using everyday, inexpensive materials are ideal for use in the classroom
and at home. The Maker activities below are examples of what can be found on
Wonderopolis.org and on Camp.Wonderopolis.org.
○ Wonder Coliseum: Puttin’ Around the House
○ Wonder First-Aid Station: Can You Hear My Heart Beat?
○ Wonder Launch Pad: Ready, Set, Go!
○ Wonder Snack Bar: Sea Food Creations!
○ Wonder Tech Workshop: It’s Time to Take Charge!
○ Wonder Weather Station: We’re On Cloud Nine!
• W
onder Journals: Students create their own learning journals using Wonders of
the Day as the center of their activities. Especially useful for vocabulary and writing
exercises, Wonder Journal work can be tailored to students’ individual needs while
keeping the class engaged around a unifying content source. Wonder Journals can also
be a meaningful tool for parent engagement. Many students take it home with them,
and it becomes a conversation starter with their families, connecting the learning they
do in and outside the classroom.
• W
onder Hunt: Uncover the Wonder all around you by exploring your classroom,
school, home, and community. Keep notes in your Wonder Journal about everything
you discover!
• W
onder Buddies: Skype with Wonder Buddies in another school, town, or country.
Wonder Buddies is a terrific method for teaching responsibility and mentoring in
older students, building support and confidence in younger students, and promoting
collaboration and a sense of school-wide community.
Keep WONDERing!
