First Aid Heroes - Factsheet 3 - Recovery Position
If you come across an unconscious casualty who is
breathing, put them into the recovery position. This
means they can breathe easily and are safe while you
call for an ambulance.
Step 1 - Kneel next to the casualty. Place the arm
nearest you outwards away from their body with the
elbow bent.
Step 2 - Bring the other arm across the body and
place the back of the hand against the ear nearest you.
Make sure you hold the hand against the ear to keep
it in place.
Step 3 - With your free hand take hold of the
casualty’s far leg near the knee. Pull the leg up,
bending the knee so their foot is flat on the floor.
Step 4 - Move the top leg so that both the knee and
the hip are at right angles. This is to stop the casualty
rolling over any further. Tilt their head back so that the
airway stays open.
Call 999 or 112 for an ambulance as the
casualty will need medical attention.
Check breathing regularly by placing the back of
your hand near to the casualty’s mouth to feel for
breathing on your hand.
