This week is Holy Week and Holy Thursday begins the Easter Triduum and commemorates the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples. It is a time of thanks giving for the gift of the Eucharist and also a time when we thank God for calling us to participate in Christ’s priestly ministry through the Sacrament of Baptism. Good Friday commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus on the Cross. The liturgy of Good Friday is in four parts: Liturgy of the Word - reading of the Passion, Intercessory prayers for the Church and the entire world, Veneration of the Cross, Communion, or the 'Mass of the Pre-Sanctified. The gathering on Good Friday is to walk with Jesus, the journey to his death, we ask him to share with us something of the pain, the struggle, the despair and the hope of that journey. We ask him to help us understand the depth and boundlessness of God’s love and mercy on us. We ask Jesus for healing in our own pain, despair and suffering. Easter Sunday liturgy is a joyous celebration. We celebrate Christ’s resurrection, Christ’s rising from death to life. It gives meaning to our lives here on earth and the assurance of everlasting life. It is also a time to commemorate our Baptism. Through Baptism we became members of the Church, the living body of Christ. This membership calls us to reflect on God’s love in our lives and our commitment to love and care for other members of Christ’s body. Last Wednesday evening we had the AGM a review of the 2016 school year in the Performing Arts Centre. Various reports were tabled including the School Board Chairperson, The School Board President, The Bursar, The APRIM and The Parents and Friends Committee. I also presented a report and celebrated all the wonderful educational gains we have made over the 2016 year. We recognised the significant contribution of Graeme Rayson who has been associated with the school for the last 17 years and had made a significant contribution to the school including his time on the school board. At the AGM I also presented the Annual Improvement Plan for 2017 which is constructed around the Continuous Improvement Framework published by CESA. As we move forward it is important to have a strategic direction and a strategic plan for the next 3-5 years. In order to do this, I need to collect some data on your thoughts on the school direction. I have engaged a survey tool from the University of Southern Queensland called the DISA or Diagnostic Inventory of School Alignment. It has three different sections one for Parents, Students and Teachers. I am asking all parents, teachers and Year 6&7 students to complete the survey from the address attached. Once the surveys are completed the University will undertake the data analysis and report back to the school. This will then inform the strategic direction for the school. The address of the survey is: http://disasurvey.acelleadership.org.au/survey/f6be0b6b once logged in just follow the instructions. I welcome Lee Jerram onto the school board, he has two children at the school Jack and Lillie and has a long association with the school through his involvement as the police liaison officer. Tuesday and Wednesday morning saw the Easter play presented by the combined Year 7’s. It was positive to see so many children be involved in the Easter story celebrating the real meaning of Holy Week and Easter. A big thankyou goes out to Mrs. Lynne Liebich and the Year 7 teachers for their ongoing work with performing arts. Tomorrow we officially say goodbye to Brady Stallard, I extend on behalf of the community best wishes to Brady as he takes up his new position of Principal St. Joseph’s Norwood and Kensington. I thank Brady for his efforts and service to the school and community for the last four years. Finally, I wish you all a Holy, Safe and Happy Easter and I look forward to seeing you all in second term commencing Monday May 1st. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the diagnostic term used to describe a lifelong developmental condition that affects, amongst other things, social communication, behaviour, sensory responses and interests. It is estimated that 1 in 100 Australians has autism. Each person on the spectrum is unique and has both strengths and challenges. At times, people on the autism spectrum may appear confused, uncommunicative, angry, anxious or exhibit challenging behaviours. Supporting someone on the autism spectrum begins with acceptance, knowledge and understanding of both autism and the individual. All schools, classrooms, community groups, teachers, students and parents need to be aware of the support, acceptance and understanding that is required of those on the autism spectrum. No two people with autism are the same, but people on spectrum of all ages often find the condition is misunderstood, as ASD is not a physical impairment that is visible to others. The importance of understanding, tolerance and acceptance was emphasised at the Autism SA State Conference on April 7th attended by four staff members. St. Joseph’s has a Learning Support Team that meets regularly in an endeavour to best meet the needs of students on the AS and their families. We have recently started a Parents Support Group who will be meeting again in early Term 2. If you wish to find out more about autism please go to www.autismsa.org.au. If you would be interested in joining our Parent Support Group please contact Kath O’Neil at school or via email; [email protected] Winter Uniform Is Worn Terms 2 and 3 Enter Your Tomb Deb Holland - APRIM Assistant Principal Religious Identity & Mission We hear of people who suffered abuse as a child. As an adult, the abuse can cause problems for their relationships. It can also lead to self-destructive behaviour, like addiction and promiscuity. For some adults they can enter their “tomb” and find that God wanted to raise them like God raised Jesus. We all live with tombs, where parts of us have died. Memories of being hurt. Memories of hurting others. Self-destructive behaviours. Our world has tombs too. Pockets of war and poverty. Nursing homes or hospitals where the old and sick lie alone. But God removed the rock from Jesus’ tomb and raised him. By doing that, God told all humanity that there is new life after the painful things we have suffered through. But you have to enter the tomb to see and believe. We do that by facing our painful memories and mistakes. We allow ourselves to cry when recalling how we've been hurt instead of gutting it out. We apologise instead of being proud. We also do that by facing our world’s pain. We turn toward the people and places that many people ignore because they are afraid or too busy. We turn toward them whether they live in our homes, neighbourhoods or in different countries. But we don’t have to enter these tombs alone. We can bring God’s power with us. We bring it when we pray or seek guidance from the Scriptures about our painful memories or mistakes. We bring it when we seek help from friends, family, or professionals. We bring it when we respond to our world’s pain with Jesus’ compassion and non-violence. Those who suffered abuse and enter their tomb, seek help from counsellors and their faith to face the abuse they suffered. As a result, they can become stronger and happier people who make a real difference in the lives of others. Once again, God rolled back the stone and raised someone to new life. Jesus’ Resurrection was only the beginning. I've seen and I believe. Last Friday not only were the children from 2W taking part in the Casual Day to raise money for Project Compassion they also spent time in the garden which at the moment has a large number of Caterpillars, Cacoons and Monarch Butterflies. LITERACY 2W have been using SENSORY ACTIVITIES to reinforce In the learning of spelling patterns and words. Lavender, Playdough and Shaving Foam have given our learning space a calm aroma.
