“In the Russian Primary Chronicle, Vladimir, Prince
of Kiev, while still a pagan, desired to know which
was the true religion, so he sent his followers to visit
the various countries of the world. They went first
to the Moslem Bulgars of the Volga, but observing
that when they prayed they gazed around like men
possessed, the Russians continued on their way
dissatisfied. ‘There is no joy among them,’ they reported
to Vladimir, ‘but mournfulness and a great smell; and there
is nothing good about their system.’ Next, they traveled
to Germany and Rome, and found the worship more
satisfactory, but complained that here too it was without beauty. Finally, they journeyed to Constantinople,
and here at last, as they attended the Divine Liturgy in
the great Church of the Holy Wisdom, they discovered
what they desired. ‘We knew not whether we were in
heaven or on earth, for surely there is no such splendor or
beauty anywhere else upon the earth. We cannot describe it
to you: We know only this— God dwells there among men;
their service surpasses the worship of all other places. For we
cannot forget that beauty.’” “Beauty will save the world”!
+ Synaxarion +
St. Vladimir, Great Prince of Russia, Equal-of-the-Apostles. Vladimir was the son of Prince
Svyatoslav, and grandson of Igor and Olga, and was at first completely pagan in faith and life.
Learning of the existence of various faiths, he began to examine them, to decide which was
best. He therefore sent envoys to Constantinople. When they returned, they told the Prince
that they had been at a service in the Orthodox Church of Hagia Sophia, and that they had been
'out of ourselves, not knowing if we were on earth or in heaven'. This inspired Vladimir to
be baptized, receiving the name Vasilii, and to baptize his people. The chief idol, Perun,
was dragged off the hill of Kiev and thrown into the Dnieper. Embracing the Christian Faith,
Vladimir utterly changed his way of life and devoted all his labor to the perfect fulfilling of the
demands of his Faith. He decreed that churches be built throughout the land on the places
where the idols had been pulled down, and himself built a beautiful church in Kiev to the most
holy Mother of God. This church was built on the selfsame spot where St. Theodore and his son
John suffered martyrdom for Christ (see July 12). With the same irresistible force with which
Vladimir earlier upheld idolatry, he now spread Christianity. He entered into rest in the Lord
in 1015.
Chalcedonian Definition of Faith, 4th Ecumenical Council (451).“Following the holy Fathers,
we all with one voice confess our Lord Jesus Christ, one and the same Son, the same perfect
in Divinity, the same perfect in humanity, truly God and truly man, the same consisting of
a rational soul and a body, homoousios with the Father as regarding the Divinity, the same
homoousios with us as regarding the humanity, like us in all things apart from sin; begotten of
the Father before all ages as regarding the Divinity, the same in the last days, for us and for our
salvation, born from Mary, the Virgin Mary, the Theotokos, as regarding the humanity, one and
the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures — without_ confusion, without_change, without_division, without_separation — the distinction of natures
being in no way abolished because of the union, but rather the characteristic property of each
nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person (prosopon) and one Hypostasis, not as if
Christ were parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son and Only-begotten
God, Word, Lord, Jesus Christ; even as the Prophets from the beginning spoke concerning Him,
and our Lord Jesus Christ instructed us, and the [Nicene-Constantinopolitan] Creed of the
Fathers was handed down to us.
“Since we have formulated these things with all possible accuracy and attention, the sacred and
ecumenical (i.e. universal) synod decreed that no one is permitted to produce, or even to write
down or compose, any other creed or to think or teach otherwise. As for those who dare either
to compose another creed or even to promulgate or teach or hand down another creed for those
who wish to convert to a recognition of the Truth from Hellenism or from Judaism, or from
any kind of heresy at all: if they be bishops or clerics, the bishops are to be deposed from
the episcopacy and the clerics from the clergy; if they be monks or of the laity, they are to be
anathematized.”
