Within the scope of the municipal “Munich
Vegetable Gardens” project, the Munich
municipal farms enable all Munich citizens
to supply themselves with freshly harvested
organically grown vegetables and herbs from
their own gardens. The municipal farm Gut
Riem prepares the vegetable gardens and
rents them for one season.
The Munich Vegetable Gardens are a joint
initiative between the Green Belt farmers,
the citizens of Munich, the Department of
Municipal Affairs and the Department of
Urban Planning and Building Regulations. The
aim is to preserve and foster sustainable and
thus forward-looking farming in the Munich
Green Belt.

Are you interested in a
vegetable garden?
We would be delighted to count you among
our gardeners! Our vegetable garden plots
are reassigned every year. Using the form
enclosed with this flyer, you can file a written
application for the next season by 31 December of each year. Then, in the course of
January, you will be informed whether your
application has been accepted or rejected.
The plots are handed over every year at the
end of April and must be vacated and returned to the municipal farm Gut Riem in midNovember. Anyone may file an application,
even those without previous experience. You
can learn from each other how to become
successful vegetable growers by exchanging
gardening and cooking experiences beyond
country and language boundaries. Different
generations work diligently side by side,
children are happy to harvest the vegetables
grown by themselves and to discover nature.
What do I have to pay attention to in
connection with gardening?
How large are the plots?
The size of the plots is either 30 or 60 square
metres. On a plot of 60 square metres, you
harvest some 200 kg of vegetables. Larger
plots can be made available upon request.
The rates are 75 euros per season for a plot
of 30 square metres and 130 euros for 60
square metres.
Are the plots already planted by the
handing over?
The vegetable gardens of the Munich municipal farms are situated in the following
locations:
Gut Riem, Isarlandstraße
Berg am Laim, St.Michael-Straße
Gronsdorf, Riemer Park
Perlach, Arnold-Sommerfeld-Straße
Trudering, Karpfenstraße
Hohenbrunn, Hubertusstraße
Daglfing, Stegmühlstraße
90 % of the plot already contains seedlings.
The rest is for your free disposal. After a crop
has been harvested, the next one may follow.
Gut Riem plants potatoes, beetroots, carrots,
parsnips, onions, spinach, peas, white radish
and small red radish in advance. When the
plot is handed over to you, you receive additional seedlings that you can plant yourself.
Their quantity depends on the size of your plot.
The garden plots are managed in accordance
with the Bioland guidelines on organic
horticulture (Bioland is the largest organicfood association in Germany). There is a ban
on using mineral fertilizers and chemical
pesticides, conventional young plants,
soil and seeds. Taking care of a vegetable
garden of 30 square metres requires at
least two to three hours per week. You are
solely responsible for maintaining your plot!
Vegetable gardens are a very original form
of gardening on farmland and serve the
supply with organically grown vegetables at a
good price. Therefore, they are not equipped
with leisure-time facilities or playgrounds as
offered in allotment garden areas or private
gardens. Since the crops are located on
agricultural land, the erection of permanent
structures is prohibited. Gut Riem provides
you with the basic tools (e.g. hoes, watering
cans) and irrigation water.
