“Your Sign Name”
Deaf people have ‘nicknames’ called SIGN NAMES.
Deaf people give each other Sign names, instead of
fingerspelling out a persons full name.
It is usually a one hand gesture using either a sign
or the initial letter of the first or second name.
The sign name can be linked to their name and their
mannerisms / personality or physical attributes (e.g.
a bald head or beer belly) !
Some examples
1.
Man named Vincent with beard could sweep ‘V’ Handshape from
cheek to chin outlining beard.
2.
Woman named Sally who has long hair could make the ‘S’ Handshape and move hand from the top of the head, along the side of
the head to the shoulder.
3.
Girl named Vicki and Sign name is ‘V’ in Wavy movement near
her hair because she has long wavy hair.
4.
Use of a sign relating to all or part of the English name, e.g. using
a sign for the colour BROWN for the name BROWN. Using the
sign for WASH for WASHINGTON.
