The dream of building
a new Art Gallery began
and at year-end 2009
we reached the top of
the mountain—project
completion!
As we celebrate this community accomplishment two
themes stand out.
The first was assembling the funding. It began with the
quiet philanthropy of leadership donors like John and
Barbara Poole, John and Maggie Mitchell, Prem and Saroj
Singhmar, Buddy Victor and Alex Osten. It continued with
nearly 1,000 private individual and corporate donors who
have contributed $22-million throughout the four year
public campaign. During 2009 alone, private individual
and corporate donations totaled $5-million.
The truly visionary $68-million support by all orders of
government ensured that the vision became a reality.
The Government of Canada was first to announce
formal financial support of this project and its two
investments totaled $20-million. These dollars were
critical in rallying support and encouragement for the
project and sent the message that Canada was behind
us as we endeavoured to create an art gallery of national
significance.
The Government of Alberta also played a leading role in
supporting this ambitious project with two significant
contributions totaling $27-million. The provincial
government supported the concept of quality of life
investments, such as the new AGA, which will be part
of the environment that will help attract and retain the
talented people Alberta needs.
Under the leadership of Mayor Stephen Mandel,
Edmonton City Council championed the AGA
project since day one. City Council made a historic,
courageous and unanimous decision to invest $21
million in creating a museum gathering place for all
Edmontonians, Albertans and our visitors.
Our small band of AGA staff, the Capital Campaign
Cabinet, the many volunteer fundraisers, and the
outstanding support of Alexandra Truscott, were
integral to the tremendous success of a Capital
Campaign that raised $90-million.
The second theme relates to the creation and the
construction of our remarkable building. Talented,
committed and motivated people made this project
happen.
The building structure started with a spark of inspired
creativity inside our architect Randall Stout and his
terrific team and design consultants. Their tremendous
talents created a structure that fulfills the AGA’s dream
of an iconic building.
Taking the cyberspace plans and actually making the
building a reality fell to the Ledcor construction team
and the many skilled men and women employed by an
incredibly wide-range of subcontractor companies. Bob
Walker and his entire team are to be congratulated for
two and a half years of focused effort that produced a
quality top-tier art museum.
Rick Arndt, the AGA’s project manager, was a very key
factor in the project’s success. His attention to detail,
hands-on approach and thousands of hours of effort
kept the project on course and on budget.
In addition to all the energy directed towards completing
the building, 2009 was also a year of significant
organizational transformation as the AGA added
staff capacity to manage a whole new level of Gallery
operations. This has been a game changer for the AGA!
In October the Gallery welcomed a new Executive
Director, Gilles Hébert, to take over the leadership of the
organization as we move forward.
Team AGA—the Board of Directors and tireless staff
led by Gilles Hébert, Catherine Crowston, Scott Nye,
Shannon Zwicker and Oksana Gowin, made invaluable
contributions to the design, construction and
operational planning phases of this project. They all
deserve a large thank you for their efforts.
From the perspective of March 2010 we can report that
the final chapter of the project—the “Opening Weekend
Celebration” was an undeniable success. More than
25,000 Albertans attended the events and enjoyed the
outstanding exhibitions displayed in their magnificent
new building. This tremendous interest and support
validated the countless hours of effort by all involved in
delivering the project.
This is a historic moment for the AGA. It is our dream
that a rebuilt, renewed Art Gallery of Alberta will
serve as a cultural centre of excellence for the Alberta
community today, and for generations to come.

Message from
the Executive Director
The amazing year that was
It has been a remarkable year for the Art Gallery of Alberta! Hundreds of donors, members, as well as staff and volunteers
saw the year conclude with the AGA operating from inside of this country’s most exciting new art museum building. What an
accomplishment—what an outstanding way to end a year. The positive energy generated by this exceptional private and public
sector collaboration engulfed the new building as the final work was completed. The buzz of anticipation was felt throughout
the city. At the centre of Sir Winston Churchill Square the warmest AGA winds could be felt on the coldest days of December.
While others prepared for the holiday season, the tireless individuals involved in the AGA’s New Vision AGA focused on opening
week event preparations. The team did not falter—we moved into the Gallery and immediately began to get ready for our first
visitors. For this level of dedication and enthusiasm I must thank everyone. And, as the one coming late to this party, I must also
congratulate all involved for an amazing task well done.
The path ahead…
The ‘go-forward’ for the AGA is all about establishing a sustainable role for the ‘new’ institution—the objective of what we refer
to as the ‘New Vision’. Operating from an obvious position—we are an art museum—we need to effect and sustain a balance that
centers on offering on-going meaningful experiences for visitors to our fantastic new home. At the same time, we need to uphold
a commitment to efficient operations, accountability to all stakeholders, and adequate revenue generation through productive
enterprises, government funding and private sector (individuals and business) support.
The Art Gallery of Alberta is committed to operating in Edmonton on a province-wide basis—focusing on contemporary and
historical art from Alberta, Canada and beyond. While we engage the people of Edmonton and their guests with experiences in the
visual arts, we are also mindful of the ideal of operating in ways that are provincial in scope and national in reach.
We must also engage people in ways that allow for ‘multiple points of entry’ into what we do and who we are. ‘Visual Culture’
is our core activity and yet we must always be mindful of those who prefer to view the AGA as a meeting place, as an economic
engine in our local and provincial economies, as a remarkable facility or simply as a landmark.
As we prepared to start the new year everyone at the AGA understood the significance of 2009. We appreciated the
accomplishments of 2009 as we embraced the possibilities ahead. We knew we were well on our way to meeting our objectives,
we all sensed it and we were filled with anticipation.

New Vision
The year of 2009 marks the finishing leg of the New Vision Capital Campaign. The exciting building construction progress now provided a ‘live’
experience as the magnificent architecture took its form and impressive presence in Sir Winston Churchill Square. With the helpful assistance of
the Ledcor team, private tours for New Vision lead donors and potential donors became a powerful campaign tool in presenting the full potential
of the new AGA as a gallery of national significance.
The well-deserved celebration in February for the Light It Up community campaign volunteer ambassadors closed the active public campaign
canvassing. However, with a revised building project schedule allowing the fabrication of the light column panels to occur later into the year, the
opportunity to accept additional Light It Up participants was extended to September. The community campaign goal was set at $1M, or, 1,000
donors contributing $1,000. Funds attained (combination of community and lead gifts) garnered through Light It Up canvassing reached just more
than $900,000 with nearly 600 inscriptions representing individuals, families and businesses from our province and beyond—an amazing result
in light of the challenging economic environment during this year.
In response to increased interest with the anticipation of building completion, the pursuit of additional major gifts for the New Vision campaign
extended right to the last day of the year, and indeed up to a few days before the Gala opening on January 29, 2010. The end result surpassed
all expectations. The $88-million New Vision project goal was not only reached, but vastly exceeded to more than $90-million attained in total
contributions from the private sector and all orders of government. This immensely successful campaign directed through its long journey by the
dedicated leadership of Allan Scott, is truly a testament of the exceptional support from our community for the arts. Together, we have created a
cultural legacy building for Alberta and Canada.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX)
The Travelling Exhibition Program was established in 1986 by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts with the vision that every
Albertan would have the opportunity to experience visual art exhibitions in their own communities. The TREX program is a
coordinated effort between The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) and the Prairie Art Gallery (Region 1), the Art Gallery of
Alberta (Region 2), The Alberta Society of Artists/Calgary (Region 3) and the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre (Medicine Hat
Museum & Art Gallery – Region 4).
In 2009, more than 117,000 visitors enjoyed 111 exhibition bookings (booking rate of 99%) out of a possible 112 bookings
offered by the Art Gallery of Alberta. Exhibitions were held at 59 venues in 37 communities. The AGA created five new exhibitions
for 2009, continued to travel five developed shows in 2008 and borrowed another eight from our three partner organizations to
offer a total of 18 for travel throughout the 2009/2010 year.
As our corporate partner, Syncrude Canada continues to enable us to continue producing First Nation based exhibitions each year.
The AGA will now be able to offer each exhibition to the three other divisions (and more Alberta communities) allowing for a three
year exhibition run for each exhibition. The first of these, Half-Breed Mythology: New Works by Aaron Paquette, was transferred
from Region 2 (AGA) to Region 3 (ASA) in December 2009. The second of these exhibitions, Maskwacis (Bear Hills), an exhibition
examining the community of Hobbema, began traveling Region 2 in January of 2010.

Education Programs
School Programs
AGA School Programs are designed to challenge students intellectually and creatively. They combine the
imaginative and critical examination of works of art with a creative exploration of ideas, techniques and materials
in complementary studio projects. The overall aim of both school programs and guided adult tours is to facilitate
viewers’ engagement with works of art, allowing visitors to discover the impact art has on their own lives.
School Tour Programs remained stable in 2009 at the AGA’s temporary location with a total of 170 booked school
and adult tours (approximately 5,000 students and tour visitors).
Studio Programs
Children and Youth
Saturday Art Classes for Children and Youth
Designed for families and artists of all ages (children ages 4-12 & youth 13+), Saturday Art Classes are studio-based
programs that include sculpture, cartooning, printmaking, drawing, painting and mixed media. Current exhibitions
inspire these the six-week sessions that take place throughout the school year.
In 2009, approximately 375 children and youth participated in Saturday Art Classes.
Art Camps and Classes
Spring and Summer Camps and Classes offer choices in partial-day classes to full-day and week-long camps. Topics
covered include painting, cartooning, drawing, and sculpture. In 2009, the Gallery hosted approximately 250
participants in Spring and Summer Camps and Classes. Offsite visits for themed camps included the expanded Horse
Camp, as well as the popular Zoo Camp. The Zoo Camp program has nurtured an art educational partnership with
The Valley Zoo Development Society that encourages young artists to realize zoological learning and observation
with visual art techniques.

Studio Workshops are pre-registered Tuesday and Wednesday evening classes that run in four, five
or six-week increments.
In 2009, approximately 150 adult students participated in Adult Studio Workshops
Drop-in Art Classes
Adult Drop-In Art Classes offer a low pressure and fun point of entry to adult art education. Guests
drop-in on Thursday evenings to learn a new technique or art style. Themes and projects vary from
week to week.
In 2009, approximately 750 adult students participated in Adult Drop-In Art Classes.
Art Express & Community Studio Classes
Art Express and similar community programs, such
as the Cerebral Palsy Art Program, offer opportunities
for hands-on studio art-making for adults with
developmental or physical challenges. Class sessions
take place in seven-week intervals throughout the year
and involve drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture
and mixed media art.
In 2009, Art Express hosted approximately 150
participants. Funded in part by Edmonton Community
Adult Learning Association and partnered with the
Winnifred Stewart Association, Art Express offered class
projects that were inspired by current exhibitions and
focused on students expressing their personal creativity.
