TANGARA SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Term 4, Week 1 Rust and Navy Wednesday, 9 October, 2013 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to Term 4, the final sprint! In our School Meeting today, I talked about marathons and the need to keep up our sporting spirit to finish the year well, persevering with our best efforts right to the end. It’s wonderful to win and to be the best. But our children should understand that giving our best is what matters most. Some of the most famous marathon runners are the ones who didn’t win. In the 1968 Mexico Olympics, the last runner entered the stadium a full hour after the winner. Perhaps you have heard the story of John Stephen Akhwari from Tanzania. He had fallen over and dis- located his knee. He hobbled up the track for one last sprint to the finish. The crowd went crazy. When asked why he didn’t give up, he replied, ‘My country did not send me 5000 miles to start the race. They sent me 5000 miles to finish the race.’ something is difficult, they don’t give up. The virtue of perseverance is more important than intelligence or natural talent. Researchers tell us that children who flourish at school and grow up to be successful professionals are not necessarily the smartest or most talented. They are people who persevere: they stick to tasks right to the end; they set goals and work towards them; they stay focussed and don’t get distracted; when Next Wednesday is the last Open Day for 2014 - your family, friends and colleagues are very welcome. And take a look at Tangara’s new website – constructive feedback is always appreciated! Our Year 12s are also in their final sprint, with the HSC beginning on Monday. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Katrina George You are warmly invited to attend an OPEN DAY To see the PARED Schools in operation WEDNESDAY, 16 OCTOBER, 2013 10.00am ~1.30pm Including a talk on “Personalised Education” by Katrina George at 11.30am at Tangara School for Girls Eeyore’s Birthday Party at Tangara Infants Kindy were learning all about bees in Term 3. So it was obvious that we would read all about the honey loving bear, Winnie the Pooh, and his friends. After reading “Eeyore had a Birthday” Kindy were surprised and delighted to be invited to Eeyore’s party. We played pin the tail on Eeyore. Mrs Kerba and Mrs Oakley helped serve out delicious raspberry spiders. We snacked on honey teddy bear biscuits, honey jumbles and honey puffs. It was indeed a lovely celebrate-y day! Year 4 Mother-Daughter Camp Many of our Year 4 girls and their mums kicked off the school holidays with lots of fun and relaxation together at Camp Crusaders at Galston Gorge. We met there on Friday night of the last week of term and left on Sunday morning after Mass. We left refreshed in body and soul, with some really happy memories and having made some new friendships or deepened old ones. The weather was glorious, perfect for the planned outdoor games, and a little bushwalk for those who wanted to take one during free time. The mums enjoyed being seriously pampered by their daughters – manicures, massages, and hair dos – and having time to sit down (especially after meals they hadn’t cooked and delicious treats they hadn’t prepared!) to chat with other mums. On Saturday night two musicians arrived to lead us in a bush dance and there were lots of happy but tired feet after that. Other highlights were playing archery which many of us did for the first time, and writing love notes to our mum or daughter in our souvenir booklets. It was so lovely to spend quality time with our daughters, their beautiful friends, and their mothers, in such a nice facility. Thank you so much to our brilliant and hard-working camp organisers, Mrs Woodbury and Mrs Moore, and everyone else who helped to make the camp such a resounding success. Our thanks also goes to Fr Max for saying Mass for us and being available for confession. Year 6 Canberra Excursion On Thursday, 12 September, Year 6 set off for Canberra at 7am. Our first stop was at Sutton Forest’s McDonalds where we enjoyed a quick breakfast. Once we were back on the bus, we sat impatiently in our seats, waiting to arrive in Canberra. On arriving safe and sound in Canberra, we were so ravenous; we ate lunch in the Senate Garden before going to Parliament House. We found Parliament House very interesting and we especially enjoyed the House of Representatives role play where girls played the parts of Speaker, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Sergeant-at-arms, Ministers, Shadow Ministers, Backbenchers and Independents. Then we were off to the House of Representatives and the Senate, where our tour guide Eric, explained to us the seating arrangements. He also told us how many clocks are in Parliament house. Can you believe there are 2 700 clocks! Before going to the Australian War Memorial, we travelled to Mount Ainslie Lookout, to see the great view of Canberra. At the War Memorial, we separated into groups and went on a tour. On the tour we learnt more about soldiers and women who served or lived during war time. We also learnt lots more about World War I and World War II. We watched light shows about the bomber plane and fighter pilots. At the end of the tour, we witnessed the closing ceremony and wandered around the gift shop. Waiting eagerly to arrive at our accommodation, the Canberra Carotel, we could not sit still. After a dinner of roast beef, gravy, potatoes and vegies we drove to the National Film and Sound Archive. At the Archive we enjoyed a presentation which involved some of Australia’s most famous TV ads and shows. After the presentation we enjoyed some hands on activities. Back at the Canberra Carotel, we said the rosary and then we all had a sound, long, sleep (NOT REALLY)! On Friday, 13 October, it was super cold in the morning. We woke up at 5.40am in order to get to breakfast by 6am. For breakfast we could have cereal and bacon and eggs. On the way to the National Museum we saw many Embassies and High Commissions including the United States, Chinese and French Embassies and the British and Canadian High Commissions. We arrived at the National Museum early so we climbed trees and played chasing to kill time. We even tried to throw Mrs Shackle and Mrs Shuttleworth in the lake! In the museum we watched a presentation on Frank Hurley and his photography. After the presentation we explored the National Museum. We saw amazing things such as a video in the Circa theatre, Phar Laps heart and an old mine digger. The Electoral Education Centre was where we learned about how Australia’s democracy started. We did 6 worksheets on elections and electorates then we went to vote. We voted on our favourite fruits. Apples had the majority vote. Questacon was our last stop in Canberra and it was one of the most memorable. At Questacon we did many hands on activities. After exploring levels 1-7 we came to the last level. This was the level that everyone was waiting for because of the Free Fall. The Free Fall was a 6.7 metre drop and many girls enjoyed it and even conquered their fears. On the way back to Tangara we all played with the souvenirs we bought at Questacon. Our last stop was at McDonalds where we enjoyed a light dinner before arriving back at school where our parents were waiting eagerly for us to return. We were all exhausted but we had fun in Canberra and glad to be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. Thank you to Miss Walsh and Mrs MacFarlane for accompanying us and helping Mrs Shackle and Mrs Shuttleworth to keep us in-line. Breanna Ivankovic 6 Navy Having our say!
