THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO EXCHANGE PROGRAM Kyoto, Japan Kyoto University of Foreign Studies Fall/Spring/Academic Year www.kufs.ac.jp Description of Program Kyoto is a big city surrounded by mountains, the main ones being Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama. Kyoto was established in 794 as the capital and over the next 1,000 years developed into a historical and cultural city. Kyoto has managed to preserve its history and culture and has become known as the cultural capital of Japan, both at home and abroad. Kyoto has not limited itself to the old, it continues to make efforts in developing new art, culture and traditions. This combination of the old and new and the “artistic” atmosphere of Kyoto is in sharp contrast to their cities in Japan. As for the population, 9.9% of the 1,460,000 people living in Kyoto City are college and university students. The statistics show that Kyoto is the No. 1 University City in Japan, which indicates its academic quality and academic vitality. Program Dates and Deadlines For semester one, September – late January: Application deadline March 1. For semester two, mid April –late July: Application deadline September 1. **These deadlines are for Kyoto University. Students will also have to meet UTSA application deadlines. Minimum Requirements Selected students must have a minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA and be a sophomore at the time of participation. Scholarships may be available to qualified applicants. This is an INTENSIVE language program, so students should be prepared. UTSA Costs Student’s tuition will be paid to UTSA. Students will be charged for 15 credits. Room and board will be paid to Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. These courses are designed to provide instruction in the Japanese language for students wishing to improve their Japanese language skill but who may not be proficient enough to participate in an academic setting. Through a placement test and interview, students will be placed into one of the five levels. Level 1 is the lowest level. This level is for students who have never taken Japanese. If students place high enough there are other subjects that students may take as long as it does not clash with the required Japanese courses. As of 07/23/10 the above costs were accurate. Costs are subject to change. Accommodation Students are expected to make their own arrangements. The university will assist students in finding accommodation. There are a variety of room types available to you: All exchange students are recommended to have available about 1,600,000 - 1,800,000 yen (~ $16,679.70 - $18,764.66 USD) per year to cover meals, books, mobile phone, living expenses and other personal costs. Kyoto University of Foreign Studies allocates every exchange student to a dormitory or apartment room. Note that there is NO Homestay arrangement via the university. In principle, exchange students are required to pay the six-month rent at the beginning of each semester. If it is not possible, they may be allowed to pay every three months. If you fail to pay by the deadline, you will be expelled from your residence. Mandatory Health Insurance-National Health Insurance National Health Insurance is administered by the city/town/village (local government) where one lives and all foreign nationals are required to enroll in this program. This insurance covers 70% of the total medical cost, which means that the patient pays only the remaining 30% at a hospital or at a dental practice. Working in Kyoto Students holding a “college student visa” are allowed by the Japanese Government to engage in a part-time job on the condition that the working hours should not exceed 28 hours a week as permitted by the Immigration Bureau. However, students are not granted absences from classes because of part-time jobs. Students should go to Japan with adequate financial support, which will enable them to pursue their studies without resorting to part-time jobs for financial survival.
