His biggest adjustment, so far, has been having so many people around him for most of the day. That’s because Mr. Trahan lived alone for the last thirty-six years. However, he always kept busy with gardening, watching old movies, and helping his neighbors, that Mr. Trahan knows his life has been richly fulfilled. These days, Mr. Trahan can often be found sitting in Southwind’s front lobby making new friends, as well as getting acquainted with old ones. He does seem to enjoy meeting and greeting people. Mr. Trahan was born in Crowley, Louisiana to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Trahan on Feb. 21, 1935. He was the youngest of three boys. When he was just a lad, Mr. Trahan’s father moved the family to Lyons Point so he could farm rice. Mr. Trahan’s schooling consisted of attending North Crowley Elementary and Crowley High School. After Mr. Trahan graduated from Crowley High School in 1955, he pursued a career as a communication’s specialist in the United States Air Force. This is where Mr. Trahan realized he was especially interested in radio and telegraph. His studies brought him to San Antonio, Texas and then to Biloxi, Mississippi. After Mr. Trahan completed his schooling in communications, the Air Force sent him to places such as Southeast Asia, Thailand, England, Alaska, South Carolina, and Florida for radio and telegraph work on many different levels. After serving his country for twenty active years, Mr. Trahan remained in the Air Force Reserves for two years. Continued on Page 2 P age 2 Southwind Hot News Continued from Front Page When Mr. Trahan finally retired completely, he found himself wanting to move back to Crowley. This is where he had a lot of good memories, family, and longtime friends. Since his mom had passed and his dad made his home at Bayou Village, Mr. Trahan spoke with his two brothers about buying the family home. Within a few weeks, he did just that. Two of Mr. Trahan’s favorite things are Christmas and gumbo. As a young boy and even to this day, Christmas has always been his favorite holiday. Mr. Trahan explains, “Everyone seems to be so happy at Christmas time – the young and the old.” His favorite food is gumbo – even as a child during the steamy, summer heat. Mr. Trahan recalls, “I’d ask my mom to fix me a good pot of gumbo. She never disappointed me either. I remember when I’d come home on leave from the service, whether it was winter, spring, summer, or fall, there sat a huge pot of mother’s gumbo with a side order of potato salad.” “Those truly are what I consider the good old days,” he adds with a sheepish grin. Southwind Talent Mr. Kenneth Richard, father of Southwind Nursing and Rehabilitation resident Ms. Angela Hannah, recently contributed to our birthday celebration with a few gospel songs, as Judy Bailey and the LA Playboys backed him. Residents were both entertained and truly inspired by Mr. Richard’s musical talent. In fact, all of us at Southwind continue to be blessed and amazed at the showcase of talent which walks through our doors on a regular basis. Thank you all! High-Energy Entertainment Southwind Nursing and Rehabilitation kicked off the new year with a high-energy musical group known as Gravel Road Band of Rayne. Among the guests entertained by the band’s various French numbers were our residents, several of the bands’ family members, and family/friends of Southwind. Pictured here is Southwind resident, Ms. Ruth Faulk, as she cradles a very tired Madison who was completely exhausted from dancing to just about every song the band performed. Although it was Ms. Faulk and Madison’s first acquaintance, it’s easy to see they felt a great amount of ‘TLC’ for one another. Holiday Happenings Wearing Of The Green - March 17, 2014 Whether you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or not, how about celebrating the color green just because it represents Spring? According to tradition, the color green became associated with Ireland, thanks to the Leprechaun-Irish folklore creatures who wore green to blend in with nature and therefore, be harder to find. St. Patrick’s Day itself is named for Ireland’s patron Saint. Southwind Hot News P age 3 Resident Employee of the Month of the Month Ms. Mildred Richard Lawanda Pitre Birthdays This Month!
