Downtown Details News from the Downtown Mobile Alliance September 2008 In This Issue Dear Carol, Development Buzz Though we are certainly not finished with the hot and humid days of our extended summer, Fall seems to be in the air this week just in time for football, the Downtown Living Tour and BayFest! The Tour is back this year, giving folks a rare opportunity to get a taste of the variety and excitement of downtown living. And with the great lineup of talent, BayFest is sure to attract one of its largest crowds ever. See the full articles below for details. Retail Happenings BayFest Downtown Living Tour Discover Dauphin Historic District New Alliance Board Members Parking Pressures Ease Register to Vote B&B Pet Stop Donation Art Classes Downtown Downtown Doings Fall is certainly shaping up to be one of the best times of year to experience all that Downtown has to offer! Development Buzz Many of you have asked recently about the status of the Crescent Theatre, often with a bit of alarm. The project indeed has seen a few delays, but developers Max Morey and John Switzer assure us that the opening is only a few weeks away. The development, which includes the art house theatre and two luxurious condominiums, is now going through the final round of inspections with the city. That process has taken a little longer than expected. Look for a grand opening before the end of next month. In other development news: The folks at the Battle House Hotel continue to add to their amenities and, in the process, 9/24/2009 9:22 AM News From Downtown Mobile Alliance 2 of 13 http://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent... help establish downtown Mobile as a "must visit" Southern city. The much-anticipated Battle House Spa is a true urban retreat, offering 10,000 square feet of soothing sights and sounds, including a Zen fire pit in the women's quiet room. The spa offers everything you would expect from a retreat anywhere in the world, from treatment rooms for massages and facials, a full service salon, steam rooms and whirlpools. And for those who choose activity over pampering, there is a state-of-the-art fitness center as well. The Spa is in its "soft opening" phase this month and should be open to the general public in a few weeks. HUKA Entertainment has moved from 354 Dauphin Street to offices in DeTonti Square, opening up space for Hernandez-Calhoun Design International, an architecture and engineering firm based in Pensacola, Florida. The firm specializes in providing design services to governmental agencies and will be working locally with the Corps of Engineers. For more economic development information Retail Happenings Shopping, Dining and Entertainment News As we noted above, the Spa at the Battle House Hotel will be offering world-class spa treatments in a soothing urban setting, but it will also be selling beauty and bath treatments. The luxurious lotions and potions are just the thing to extend your afternoon of pampering and make great gifts for anyone on your list. In other retail news: The busy corner of Dauphin and St. Joseph Streets will soon see even more activity as Source One Legal Copy opens its doors. The business is relocating from Water Street to the renovated space at 110 Dauphin Street. A Spot of Tea proprietor Tony Moore is venturing beyond the breakfast and lunch crowd by open Club Insanity in the former comedy club space behind the restaurant. The late night spot will be open in about eight weeks, creating 24/7 activity in the 300 block of Dauphin Street. The Haunted Book Loft at Bienville Books is now open, more than doubling the floor space of the quirky, charming book store. The new area creates more space for new and used titles and will house sections devoted to horror, the supernatural and special collections of Mardi Gras books and memorabilia. Bienville Books Downtown's retail picture gets a little brighter next month when Inside Up opens in temporary space in the first floor of the Staples Pake Building at 80 St. Michael Street. The store will offer home accents, seasonal gifts, clothing, jewelry, gourmet food and local art. The owners are remodeling space at 7 North Conception Street overlooking Bienville Square and hope to be in their 9/24/2009 9:22 AM News From Downtown Mobile Alliance 3 of 13 http://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent... permanent location by mid-November - just in time for holiday shopping! Discover Dauphin Historic District Take A Walk Back in Time Several times a week during peak tourist seasons, visitors will walk into our office and ask about the historic sites in downtown. The Alliance has a wonderful brochure, the Dauphin Street Historic District Walking Tour, and armed with this guide they head off to discover the delights of our architectural past. As is the case in most cities, visitors to Mobile often experience more local history than locals themselves! Each month we'll be featuring a stop on the walking tour so you'll be able to explore downtown's history without ever leaving your computer - but we think you'll find that the more you know about our past, the more you'll want to get out and walk back in time on your own. 31 North Royal Street AmSouth Bank Building, 1965 This 34-story International style skyscraper was the tallest building in Mobile when it was built and remained so until the RSA Battle House Tower opened in May 2007. Stephen Carter is a landscape architect with the Corps of Engineers and the owner of two properties on Conti Street, one of which has been beautifully restored. The other is in the process of restoration. 9/24/2009 9:22 AM News From Downtown Mobile Alliance 6 of 13 http://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent... Ralph Hargrove is the president of Hargrove and Associates, a fast-growing engineering firm based in Mobile. Hargrove is renovating the Neisner Building at 26 South Royal along with a portion of the adjoining Kress Building. When the offices are finished, near the end of the year, he'll move a total of about 200 employees to the central business district. Margo Gilbert is the general manager of the Battle House Hotel and has overseen the opening of hotel, restaurants, gift shop and spa. Her demand for top quality customer service is setting a new standard for the hospitality industry in Mobile. Parking Pressures Begin to Ease Earlier this year the Alliance commissioned a parking demand and availability study, and with the guidance of the Mayor's Parking Working Task Force several recommendations were made to the city. Some were long term, more expensive solutions, but others were fairly easy and inexpensive to implement. We're seeing the first of those changes on Jackson Street between Government and Conti Streets, where about a dozen parking spaces were added. The Task Force has identified other areas where an additional 200 spots could be created with little more than new paint. Though we must continue to work toward the longer term solution of parking garages, these first steps will provide some short term relief. Mayor Sam Jones and the City have shown great leadership in addressing this issue which continues to create a competitive disadvantage for the retailers, restaurants and some businesses located Downtown. The work, however, is just beginning. Register to Vote Mobilians will be going to the polls in November to elect new local, state and national leaders. If you're not already registered to vote or you need to change your address, click on the link below for a voter registration form. As our founding fathers understood, the future of our country (city and state) depends on a well informed and involved electorate. Voter Register Form B & B Pet Stop Makes Main Street Donation Earlier this summer B & B Pet Stop at 5035 Cottage Hill Road named Main Street Mobile as its Round Up for Charity designee. Pet lovers rounded up on purchases during the month of June and Main Street has received a check for $1026. The money will be used for public landscaping programs downtown. Since the Round-Up for Charity program began in March 2007, B&B has raised more than $18,000! The Trufant family, owners of B&B Pet Stop, has long been active in the arts and downtown redevelopment and says the effort is a win-win for everyone. 9/24/2009 9:22 AM News From Downtown Mobile Alliance 7 of 13 http://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent... Here, in the region's bountiful coastal wetlands, alligators, humans and other wildlife have lived in harmony for centuries. Tragically, these wetlands are eroding into the sea at the speed of one acre every thirty minutes, leaving the entire region more vulnerable to major hurricanes. With these elements he pushes each of his paintings to question and expose fascinating subtleties in the nature of balance. This body of works simultaneously carries a tremendous weight of experience and the crackle of immediate sensation. These paintings, all from this decade, draw on Sella's deep and unique understanding of the figure and painting sensation. This direction in painting's history can be traced to the Impressionists who were interested in the nature of vision itself as well as making paintings. Then the idea became more specific and defined in history through Cezanne's work, as he broke with the more classic Impressionist practices. In Cezanne's paintings, "sensation is not in the "free" or disembodied play of light and color (impressions); on the contrary, it is in the body". This understanding of the nature of sensation and how painting can express it became central to the practices of Sella and his contemporaries, in the 1940's. http://www.space301.com/calendar.php Mobile Public Library's TGI Thursday Film Series - Caramel 7:00 pm; Bernheim Hall, Ben May Main Library This must-see romantic comedy follows the lives and loves of five women whose paths criss-cross in a Beirut salon. With a beautiful narrative style and some clever plot devices the film introduces us to: Nisrine, engaged to Bassam, with a secret she shares with her co-workers; Jamale, a divorced mother of teens, a part-time model, fearing the encroachment of time; Rima, always in pants, attracted to Siham, a client who smiles back; Layale, in love with a married man, willing to drop everything at a honk of his horn. There's also Rose, a middle-aged seamstress, who cares for aging sister. Rose has a suitor; Layale has an admirer on the police force. Is delight a possibility? Is caramel a sweet or an instrument of pain? This is a Lebanese film in Arabic and French with English subtitles. It runs 95 minutes and is rated PG for thematic elements involving sexuality, language and some smoking. http://www.eventkeeper.com/code/events.cfm?curOrg=MOBILE 9/24/2009 9:22 AM News From Downtown Mobile Alliance 10 of 13 http://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent...
