Everyone has their own special and unique contribution to make at Boyd Bros. so it is really a hard process to come up with just one person in each department or category. Statistics show who will receive the actual award but in our sight, every associate is a winner and is appreciated and valued at Boyd. Every location took time to show their appreciation to and celebrate with the 2010 Associates of the Year and the associates who had reached a milestone in service. A milestone is defined as 5 years (or multiples thereof) of continuous employment with the company. Each location gathered around noon to present the awards and serve lunch to everyone who could be there. Certificates were given to each of the honored associates along with the promise of a garment that has the Boyd logo on one side and is personalized with their name and their particular award on the other side. The garment for Years of Service will be determined by the number of years the associate has been at Boyd. Celebrations continued in Birmingham on March 10 for another double 2 Million Mile Day and a 3 Million Mile Day was held earlier in February. Yes, excellence and dedication abound at Boyd. See inside this issue for pictures of the winners of the Drivers’ Awards, the Associates of the Year Awards and the Years of Service Awards. Boyd Bros. Chosen in Top 20 Best Fleets To Drive For Boyd Bros. is honored to be chosen by its drivers to be in the top 20 Best Fleets to Drive For again this year! It feels good to be chosen again this year from an even bigger field of nominees, especially knowing that a company must be nominated by and voted on by its drivers. The contest is sponsored annually by Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and CarriersEdge to identify trucking companies that provide the best workplace experiences for their drivers. What a great honor from our drivers! Boyd Bros. From the Top... Everyone is excited about the return of freight volumes and the anticipation of much better times. Increased freight volumes will result in bigger pay checks and the ability to get our drivers home more often and on time. We anticipate strong freight volumes the remainder of the year barring any negative economic impact from high oil prices, Middle East crisis and the earthquake in Japan. Many of the weak carriers have gone out of busi- ness. We are also honored to be chosen as one of the top 20 Best Fleets to Drive For again this year. All of Boyd’s non driver employees work hard to make our drivers successful. We all are proud of Boyd’s success and as our mission statements says, “Work Hard, Work Smart and Enjoy Life.” Thanks for making Boyd the best flatbed carrier in America. Richard Bailey, President Increasing Business Improves O/Op Options As you’ve heard me say before, one of the most difficult jobs in our economy is driving a truck. Another very difficult job is operating your own business. The challenge of putting these two together is not easy, but for those who can succeed, there is a level of personal satisfaction and reward that is hard to match. Owner-operator truckers are a unique group. Nationally, they are among the safest drivers, they have excellent customer service, and they tend to be no-nonsense people who are focused on running a successful business. Let’s be honest, over the past few years, the trucking industry has had to deal with a lot of big challenges. Many established trucking companies have not survived. Nationwide, many sole-proprietor owner-operators have also felt the same pressures. It’s time now, though, to look at the improving economic conditions and realize that we have a much better freight condition that has existed for at least the past few years. As these conditions improve, many drivers will again consider becoming an owner-operator. As national industry experts have said, “Now is a good time to be an owner-operator”. Our job at Boyd is to help each of our associates succeed. Regardless of what you choose to do, you have a place here. Some drivers will make a strong career as a company driver; others will choose a different path toward their own goals. At Boyd, we don’t force you onto a single path. Your goals, your needs and your expectations will be different than anyone else’s. You aren’t a cookie – so we don’t use a cookie-cutter! You have several options to consider as you build a career here. Apart from the company-driver option, you can lease (rent) a truck, you can buy a truck through Boyd (lease-purchase), or you can bring a truck in from the outside (our BIE fleet). There is a lot of information that you’ll need as you consider expanding your career, so let me know. When you’re able to come by the Birmingham terminal, let’s sit down and talk about these options you have. Let’s face it, unless your retirement plan is to win the lottery, we all have to work. You might as well do something that will move you toward your goals. Making your goals is your job…helping you reach those goals is our job. So let’s see what we can do to help. Steve Bredigkeit Birmingham Recognizes Excellence, Upgrades Facility Our company Mission Statement, which is the road-map of our values, makes it clear: We Require High Standards and we Value, Respect and Trust Our People. We know that we attract and keep the best drivers and support folks in our industry, but even within that group of professionals we were honored to recognize the best among us as we celebrated Awards Day. Other facilities were taking time out to note each award recipient, and we were able to do so here. The list of winners will appear elsewhere, but it was a fun time to spend together. We know that, as a driver, you had a hard job to do, but whether you were able to be with us, know that you are a critical part of our success, and we all appreciate your sacrifice and efforts! Our facility is a home-away-from-home and we will be making some nice upgrades to the Birmingham terminal. The end of March and early April will see a lot of work, please pardon our progress. We want you to look forward to visiting, and these upgrades should increase your comfort while you’re here. In the meantime, as we look at spring and a season of “new beginnings” I wanted to remind you that everything we do at our facilities is designed with you in mind. From the break areas, laundry, exercise areas, and access to a terminal vehicle, to all of the support folks that you can use (Safety, Operations, MPG, Maintenance), we set this up to be a convenience to you, and a relaxing place to pause in your busy day. On behalf of my family, thanks for all that you do. Your success makes all of this possible. Then think about driving 3 Million Safe Miles! Now that is excellence and dedication!!!! Realize that 3 million miles would be equivalent to driving around the earth 120 times. Boyd Bros. honored Ike Hamilton on Feb 4 with a 3 MM celebration at the Birmingham terminal. Ike, who is from Colquitt, GA, has been with Boyd since July of 1989. He says his family is very proud of him and that he’s thankful for the support they’ve shown over the years. Not only are Ike’s wife, Gracie, and family proud of him, but his whole Boyd family is proud of him. We all could learn a lot from Ike as he puts God first and stays focused on the job at hand. When you call in to Boyd, the voice you hear belongs to Anthony Lawrence. Anthony is the Sales Manager in Boyd Logistics and has been here for a year. Yes, you do hear a little bit of Brit! He was born and raised in Coventry, England – about fifteen minutes from Birmingham. He came to the States in 1987 and entered the transportation industry in 1993 with Delta Air Cargo. Anthony is married and has two children, Chloe (24) and Amari (18). They reside in Birmingham, AL……a long way from Birmingham, England. Interesting Call It’s always a pleasure for us to get calls like this one below. We know that we have the best drivers but it’s always good to hear it from someone else, especially law enforcement!! Sheriffs department from Lowndes county called in a few moments ago, about our driver, trailer # 50648 which is JONRC, Ricky Jones. He wanted to compliment us on his safe driving. He stated he was driving an unmarked police car and the driver could not possibly know he was police. He followed him a long distance and stated that it was a joy to watch this driver driving a "big rig." He also said this was one of the safest truck drivers he has ever observed. Ricky, we are proud of you!!!. The 2011 Healthy Trucking Association of America Summit addressed important driver health and wellness concerns. Hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and obesity are only a few of these concerns. The Summit addressed ways to help our drivers get healthy and live longer lives.” Driver Recruiting – 1-800-543-8923 Years of Service 5 Years Jesse Hickmon John L. Howell Arluster V. Driver Recruiting – 1-800-543-8923 Working With All Your Heart Several years ago, I walked into a business in Oxford, Alabama, and noticed a very nicely framed picture on the office wall. The manager told me that when his wife’s grandmother died; they discovered these words written in her bible. Faithfulness in work means not being lazy, but being steady. It means being obedient to one’s superiors and following orders. It means cutting no corners or cheating on the quality of work, Or the time spent on a job. Working faithfully is being fair to those, for whom you work, And to those who may work for you. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, As though you were working for the Lord, not for man. This grandmother knew the importance of a good work ethic, and the value of excellence. She knew that employers need men and women who put their heart into their work. Her words speak of being energetic and steady! Her last line comes from the Bible. Colossians 3:22-24. 22 You slaves must obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Obey them willingly because of your reverent fear of the Lord. 23Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Paul wrote these verses originally to slaves, but I am absolutely sure that they can apply to us and our work. “Try to please them all the time,” Paul writes to the Colossians. Imagine with me what the workplace would be like; if we honestly tried to please our supervisors all the time. Then Paul says, “…not just when they are watching you.” Imagine with me the productivity that would happen if we did our best work when our supervisors aren’t looking over our shoulders. Now, let’s talk about revolutionizing the workplace! Paul admonishes workers to “work hard and cheerfully at whatever they do.” This is the secret to having an atmosphere where people thrive, and the job gets done well. Finally, Paul addresses workers having a higher purpose. He directs workers to work as if they are “working for the Lord rather than for people.” If you are a mechanic, strive to be the best mechanic you can be. If you are a driver, then work at becoming the best driver possible. If you are a plumber, endeavor to be the best plumber you are capable of being. Whatever your job, do what you can to excel. The bottom line is that your excellence will benefit you and your company. Gaylon Benton, Chaplain Inside Sales/Operations Department Greetings from the Inside Sales and Operations Department. Well, we made it through the winter and now spring is upon us; temperatures will continue to rise each week and hopefully we’ll be blessed with some good warm weather for a good long time. With the change in the weather, so comes the change in freight. Currently, the demand for trucks continues to increase each week as shippers struggle to cover their available freight and work to align themselves with financially secure and reputable carriers. Many factors have contributed to this scenario. Over the past 3 years, many flatbed companies have gone out of business thus reducing capacity; the ones that did survive did so by reducing their fleet size, slashing rates just to get the freight, and cutting back or cutting out operational programs within their company. Many of these companies are not financially secure and are unable to borrow money to invest in new equipment; this can lead to service and CSA issues. Another reason for the tightening of the flatbed market is the implementation of CSA scores and violations for both carriers and drivers. What we have found is CSA has forced some drivers to leave flatbeds for vans due to the load securement exposure and possible violations that exist in the flatbed world, but not with vans. Thus, finding qualified and quality drivers has become increasingly difficult with the implementation of CSA. This new world for flatbeds will allow Boyd Brothers to be more selective when booking loads with customers. It will allow the selection of only those loads that meet Boyd’s requirements in terms of rates, fuel surcharges, and direction to get drivers home. This shortage of capacity in excess freight has the potential to last for some time in the flatbed world. We have recently had a couple of small cargo claims as well as a couple of near misses due to weather. It is important that the entire load be covered and protected if the load assignment requires tarp. If tarps have small holes in them or are in need of repair, make sure you do one of the following: 1) stop by one of our terminals and pick up a tarp repair kit 2) use duct tape to cover any holes 3) turn in unserviceable tarps at one of the terminals in exchange for good tarps and/or 4) use poly on loads to further protect against water damage. The key prior to all this is to make sure you do everything possible to protect the tarp from cut or tears by covering sharp edges with cardboard, rubber mats, pieces of carpet, or pieces of old tarps from one of our terminals. And if your tarps have holes in them, then communicate with your fleet manager and let them know so we can advise you what to do. The inside sales/operations department would like to congratulate the Years of Service and Associates of the Year award winners for their accomplishment this past year.
