Dear Prince George’s County Community Member,
The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention at the University of Maryland,
College Park has partnered with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) to identify
organizations and resources available to young children and families throughout Prince
George’s County. Through our collaboration with state/local early childhood advisory councils,
school systems and community organizations, we have developed a Resource Guide intended
to provide families with the information they need to promote the optimum health,
development and learning of the county’s young children. This resource guide includes a
compilation of agencies throughout Prince George’s County as well as informative websites that
address children’s health and parenting.
We would like to thank all those who assisted in the creation of this guide book including:




Health and Human Services Department of Human Services, Children, Youth and
Families Division
Prince George’s County Even Start Family Literacy Program (Even Start)
Prince George’s County Head Start (PGCHS)
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS)
Please share this guide with families and colleagues in Prince George’s County. If you know of
additional resources that should be added to the guide, please send that information to
[email protected]
Sincerely,
Melissa Duchene, PhD

Christy Tirrell-Corbin, PhD
Executive Director, Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention
The Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention
Services (DSE/EIS) has identified action imperatives which guide the quality of work conducted
in Prince Georges County School, which include access, equity, and progress in early childhood.
By designing a resource book that contains websites, organizations, and agencies that
specifically address the needs of the families of the children enrolled in PGCPS, the access to
services may be less elusive thus improving the progress of children.
The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI) is grateful to the Maryland
State Department of Education, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services
(DSE/EIS) for funding the Family Engagement Project in Prince George’s County Public
Schools. CECEI also gratefully acknowledges DSE/EIS for supporting the development and
publication of this resource guide.

Introduction
The Family Resource Guide was developed through a partnership with the following agencies:
Health and Human Services Department of Human Services, Children, Youth and Families
Division
The mission of the Department of Family Services (DFS) is to ensure the creation of effective
community-based services that enhance the quality of life for the individuals and families of
Prince George's County.
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)
MSDE develops and implements standards and policy for education programs from prekindergarten through high school. Many divisions housed in MSDE are tasked with improving
childcare and early learning through leadership, support, and accountability.
Prince George’s County Even Start Family Literacy Program (Even Start)
The mission of the Even Start Program is to increase the oral and written communication skills
of educationally disadvantaged adults and their children. Family literacy instruction and related
support is provided in conjunction with services already being offered by the Prince George’s
County Public Schools, government agencies, and community organizations. Additionally, Even
Start works to educate parents to help their young children succeed in school thus focusing on
the educational needs of the whole family.
Prince George’s County Head Start (PGCHS)
PGCHS’s mission is to provide an integrated system of quality services to participating families
and eligible children. Head Start encourages self-sufficiency, growth, and development
supported through family and community partnerships. Head Start:




Is Primarily federally funded;
Provides comprehensive multidisciplinary services to meet the needs of children and
their families, promoting school readiness;
Recognizes the parents as the child’s primary educator, nurturer, and advocate;
Encourages parents to become involved in policy and program decision making and to
participate as volunteers and serves eligible children 3-5 years of age
2
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS)
PGCPS vision is for all students to have access to high-quality learning environments, a broad
array of educational opportunities, and effective support systems that equip them to graduate
college and career ready.
University of Maryland Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI)
CECEI conducts high quality research on early childhood education and early intervention
programs in order to: (1) inform State and Federal policy, (2) translate research into scalable
education programs and best practices, (3) build capacity in schools and communities, and (4)
promote family engagement in their children’s education. CECEI partners with several Early
Childhood Centers, Infant/Toddler programs, and the Judy Centers in Prince George’s County
Public Schools to promote evidence-based practices that improve children’s academic
outcomes.
