Does being a Jew mean being born of Jewish parents or adopting the Jewish faith? Does it mean eating prescribed foods and refraining from others? Does it mean subscribing to certain religious beliefs and observing specific rituals and ceremonies? Is it the reverence for God and learning; for Torah and for Israel? Or, does it mean being the constant victim of scorn, hatred and persecution? Certainly these elements have all been a part of the life of the Jew. But there is one additional feature; the quality of character and sensitivity; we call it menschlechkeit. It is this that is pointedly alluded to in this parsha of Ki Tetze. It is this that Moshe impresses upon the Bnai Yisrael, just before they are to enter into the land of Israel and before his death. It is here, in this Parsha, that the Torah sets in motion the sequence of the first paragraph of the sedra. The first law is that of the woman prisoner-of-war, "The Yefat Toar", taken as a wife. The second is that of the hated wife and her son. The third is the wicked, rebellious son. The fourth is the executed criminal. The commentators observe that each is the consequence of the preceding paragraph. Good, does not spring from evil. Troubles and calamities have their roots in men's deeds. We are taught in Pirkei Avot "The Ethics of Our Fathers". "One mitzva (good deed) leads to another, and one sin leads to another." Nothing we do happens in isolation, everything leaves its mark. Every deed brings others like it in its wake. Each deed is a link to another, and soon a habit is formed. In this way, this sedra portrays the true composite Jew, a mensch who is compassionate, charitable, solicitous and decent. As we approach the Holidays, we need to take a serious look at ourselves. This is the time for introspection and evaluation. Can any of us say that we have nothing to perfect, nothing to improve, nothing to evaluate? As we hear the sound of the shofar every morning let us ponder our behavior towards man and Hashem. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Gabe Elias PARASHAT KI TETZE Parashat Ki Tetze begins with the same phrase as the previous perek (in Parashat Shoftim): "Ki Tetze LaMilchama al Oyvecha..."-when you go out to war against your enemies. The Chachamim embellish this idea, connecting it to our particular time of the year, the Tekufa of Elul, the season of Teshuva. As the Sefer HaChinuch explains, during this time of repentance we are all at war with our Yetzer Harah, our evil inclination. And just as Bnei Yisrael would sound the shofar before running into battle, in order to arouse their spirits and increase their confidence, so too we begin to blow the shofar as a minhag to awaken ourselves to do Teshuva. The Rambam, at the beginning of Hilchot Teshuva, famously formulates this by saying "Uru Uru Mishinatchem,"--Awaken, wake up, from your slumber! Throughout the year we are 'sleeping,' moving from place to place, from our jobs to our homes, from our homes to the Beit Knesset, etc... This time of the year, with the help of Selichot, we are advised to stop and think. What were our accomplishments this past year? In which areas can we improve and be more mindful in Mitzvot Bein Adam L'Makom and Bein Adam L'Chaveiro? We are at war--"Ki Tetze LaMilchama..." In order to be victorious we must heed the sound of the Shofar and wake up to battle our true enemy, our Yetzer Harah. Shabbat Shalom!
